From 1953 to 1956, three years and 18 films, and all flops. This was Shammi Kapoor’s filmographic description till he rose like a phoenix. But it was his determination and guts that he struggled and struggled until he got his first hit in 1957 with Tumsa Nahi Dekha. The film earned 1.25 crore at the Box Office and was the actor’s first film to cross the 1 crore mark at the Box Office.

However, before Tumsa Nahi Dekha, Shammi Kapoor gave 18 flops at the Box Office. Yes, that was Raj Kapoor’s younger brother for you. 18 continuous flops. He was the first actor to play Majnu on screen, probably with Laila Majnu, in 1953, the year he made his film debut.

His next hit was in the year 1959 with Dil Deke Dekho, whose title track, was a superhit! The film earned 90 lakh at the Box Office. The following year was phenomenal for Bollywood – 1960, the year of Mughal-E-Azam. But Shammi Ji maintained the winning streak with a hit like Singapore, which had a lifetime business of 55 lakh. However, his box office breakthrough came in 1961 with Junglee whose title track and Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujh Par were chartbusters. This musical hit was the second highest-grossing film of 1961 and collected 2 crore at the box office!

The year 1962 gave him three hits in Professor (1 crore), Dil Tera Deewana (85 lakh), and China Town (70 lakh). The actor then told the world how to Shake it Like Shammi with constant musical hits. It started with Tumne Pukara Aur Hum Chale Aaye from Rajkumar, which collected 1.6 crore, and the musical superhit Kashmir Ki Kali, which collected 1.4 crore and still makes us groove to Ye chaand sa roshan chehra.

Shammi Kapoor turned into the OG dancing superstar at the Box Office, also ruling with his chartbuster songs with films like Teesri Manzil, An Evening In Paris, Brahmachari, and more. While Teesri Manzil (1966), with iconic songs like O Haseena Zulfon Wali and Aaja Aaja Main Hun Pyaar Tera, collected 2.25 crore and turned a landmark for him, his career’s highest grosser, another hit in the actor’s career was an Evening in Paris (1967) that collected 1.5 crore at the Box Office, followed by Brahmachari’s 1.25 crore which came grooving to Aajkal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche.

Ironically, Shammi Kapoor never made it to the top except for Junglee, but he surely was the only superstar who gave more chartbusters to shake and groove and stayed relevant, being a part of the top ten HGOTY continuously with his musical superhits. His last hit as the lead was in 1971 with Andaz, which collected 2 crore at the box office.

Shammi Kapoor conveniently moved to supporting roles further in his career and stayed relevant till his last film, Rockstar, which had his nephew Rishi Kapoor’s son Ranbir Kapoor playing the lead.

It’s all due to Shah Rukh’s effort that the film saw the light of day.”

Kundan Shah further revealed that Kabhi Haa Kabhi Naa was different from regular romantic films where the hero gets the girl in the end. It eventually recovered its budget after 12 years of its release.

Speaking of it, Prakash Jha had vented out in frustration saying, “I have just made a film about an election. It is not about Bihar or Sonia Gandhi or the Congress, so I don’t understand the whole controversy.” Even Ranbir Kapoor had said that Raajneeti didn’t have any controversial content about which the hoopla has been created. “There is no controversial content in the film and it’s fictional,” the actor had said during a promotional event.

It’s just one of the controversies Raajneeti had faced. During the pre-release phase, the movie was denied permission by Delhi Police to promote it at Delhi University.

Speaking of the cast, it stars Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgn, Manoj Bajpayee and others in key roles. In its theatrical run in India, the movie had made 93.75 crores and was declared as a blockbuster hit.

You end up walking into a scene having a different feeling,” Pattinson had told the Observer newspaper.

Upon the film’s release, Sadhu’s supports had alleged the makers of ill faming their leader by using his name for a negative character.

With Bihar being the hotspot of politics, it was obvious that Gangaajal would have to go through an acid test. Veena and Apsara cinema of Patna were vandalised by Sadhu Yadav’s supporters, due to which the screening came to a halt for one week. Post the entire row, RJD’s founder and husband of Rabri Devi, Lalu Prasad Yada met Prakash Jha and cleared that there’s nothing objectionable in the film.

After Lalu’s green signal, Sadhu Yadav too stated that the film has nothing to do with him. So, after one week’s stay, the Ajay Devgn starrer finally saw a resumption of its shows in Veena and Apsara cinema. And interestingly, the film actually witnessed a huge response after all the violence that took place. In fact, people even purchased tickets through black marketing.

Now, that’s one of the many cases where the film has been benefitted by controversy.

Gangaajal collected around 11 crores in its theatrical run. Apart from Ajay Devgn and Mohan Joshi, it also features Gracy Singh, Mukesh Tiwari, Daya Shankar Pandey and Yashpal Sharma.

Two years later in 1997, Dil Toh Pagal Hai released and it too was Super Hit with a collection of 35 crores. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai arrived in 1998 and this evergreen rom-com made 47 crores with a Super Hit verdict. In 2000, SRK’s Mohabbatein stormed the ticket windows and pulled off a mammoth earning of 43 crores. His next releases- Veer Zaara (2004), Don (2006), Om Shanti Om (2007), Ra. One (2011), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) and Happy New Year (2014), all emerged successful as well.

On entire Jagga Jasoos row, Govinda had tweeted, “I gave full respect to Kapoor family I did the film because he is my senior’s son I was told I will get the script. I was told they will narrate the film in South Africa and I dint even charge my signing amount made no contracts. I was unwell and on drips but still, I travelled to South Africa and did my shoot. There were various negative stories and negative articles only for GOVINDA and that’s how the film was remembered for 3yrs. I did my job as an actor and if the director is not happy it’s completely his call.”

Reacting on his tweet, Ranbir Kapoor had apologised to him. While talking to Indian Express, he had said, “Unfortunately the entire track has been chopped off; it is our fault, Basu and mine. We had started this film very prematurely, without a complete script. The character had completely changed, and the film was taking so long. It is very irresponsible, and very unfair to cast a great legend like Govinda and not give justice to his role. It is very unfortunate the way things panned out. We are apologetic, but it is for the best for the film that we had to cut that track out.”

Very few would be aware that not Hrithik Roshan but Aamir Khan was the first choice to play Karan Shergill in Lakshya. Farhan Akhtar had approached Aamir, but he was committed to YRF’s Mangal Pandey: The Rising. So, as he backed out, we got our Karan in Hrithik.

Lakshya also featured Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani and others in key roles. In its domestic theatrical run, the film had minted 24.25 crores.

Meanwhile, last year, the film completed 15 years. Sharing about it, Hrithik said the film resonated with his phase of self-discovery as an actor.

“A beautiful story of self-discovery that touched my life in many ways. ‘Lakshya’ resonated with my phase of self-discovery as an actor. It gave me a friendship of a decade and a half with Farhan (Akhtar) and Ritesh (Sidhwani),” Hrithik had tweeted. Calling it a special movie, Hrithik continued, “It blessed me with the overwhelming love from my audience. Here’s to 15 years Of ‘Lakshya’, a film that will always be very special.”

In Lakshya, Hrithik plays the role of Lieutenant (later acting Captain) Karan Shergill, who develops from an aimless young man into an army officer. It is a coming-of-age story set against a fictionalized backdrop of the 1999 Kargil War.

On the work front, Hrithik delivered two big success last year in the form of Super 30 and War. He’ll be next seen in Rakesh Roshan’s Krrish 4.
