What’s Good: Sonic 3 leans on the more superhero aspects of the Sonic franchise and leaves behind most of the human roles in the background, as it should be.

What’s Bad: The humor can be hit or miss, and while Carrey is outstanding, his brand of humor feels quite dated.

Loo Break: There is very little room for rest, maybe the start of the second act, but the film moves at a great pace.

Watch or Not?: This is a great family film, and for Sonic fans, it is a must-see.

Language: English (with subtitles)

Available On: Theatrical release

Runtime: 110 Minutes

User Rating:

The Sonic franchise is one of the most important ones in the video game medium, and it has, since its beginnings, been at the forefront of it, thanks to the creation of one of the most endearing mascots for any brand. Since its creation, Sonic has gathered quite a following, and it feels surreal to be the third entry in what is now a very successful film franchise for the Sega mascot. This third outing is the best yet, with director Jeff Fowler confident enough to go all out.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Review: Script Analysis

Past Sonic films have suffered from being too much like other family films that combine live-action actors with digital creatures. Some of these films are genuinely awful, like the Smurf films. The first two installments of Sonic on the Big Screen also had a bit of that flavor, as the script forced the story to give importance to the human characters, which was a mistake because no one was paying a ticket to see them.

However, in the last third of the second film, Fowler realized the franchise’s potential by delivering powerful action sequences that felt like something from the games. So, this third film leans on that sensation given by the third act of the second film, and it is much better for it. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles and their relationship as a team is the core of the story, and while some human characters appear here and there, they are pushed to the back as they always should have been.

Shadows, the new boy in town, also gets a ton of screen time, solid backstory, and character development. Most importantly, it keeps him in the cool zone by giving him many powerful moments. Overall, the plot is quite cliché, and you can see each of the story beats coming from a mile away. Yet, it feels like an improvement over the other films because the protagonists are precisely who we want to see in that position, and everything else has been filtered out.

The dialogue can sometimes fall into cringe territory thanks to a constant flow of pop-culture references that will date the film too much as time passes. There are also a couple of comedic sequences by Jim Carrey that feel too dated.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Review: Star Performance

Jim Carrey is the film star; of course, he is the biggest name tied to a live-action character, in this case, Dr. Robotnik, and he does well at giving one of his signature performances. Carrey plays to characters this time, and the gimmick works because, while similar, the characters are also quite different. It feels right to see such a comedy legend back in action, even if it is for a paycheck gig.

However, the voice actors playing the actual main characters, Schwartz, Elba, O’Shaughnessy, and Reeves, shine in this film. Their performances are great, and while Reeves’ voice is too similar in tone to the one he uses in the video game Cyberpunk 2077, you get used to it pretty fast, and Shadow becomes a perfect addition to the character roster. Everyone does an excellent job, including Elba, who also shines with some great speeches, even when his character, Knuckles, is definitely more in the background than the others.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Review: Direction, Music

Fowler is also one of the movie’s stars; even if he doesn’t appear on-screen, you can feel that the first-time director of the first Sonic film has grown quite a lot in this Sonic journey. The film feels countless times leaner and meaner than the previous films, and Fowler’s confidence is evident when the film waits no time to throw us into the action in sequences that feel effortless and entertaining.

Several action sequences in the film explore the anime side of the Sonic franchise, and each one is film-right, epic, and has lots of cool moments. Sonic fans will be screaming and cheering as the movie delivers reference after reference from the games, but never in an intrusive way. The epic factor is quite big, especially thanks to Tom Holkenborg, who delivers a pretty epic score to level up everything in the film.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Review: The Last Word

Sonic 3 can still feel dumb, cringy, and cliché at times, but it is also a very solid family film, filled with a story that works, characters that undergo change and development, and amazing action sequences that are entertaining to watch and respectful of everything that the source material has offered fans for decades. Sonic 3 is the best Sonic film to date, but with another sequel surely on the way, it seems it won’t hold that title for very long.

What’s Good: The film’s tone doesn’t shy away from the comic-book feeling of old, an element that most modern superhero films try to avoid in favor of a more realistic feeling.

What’s Bad: The script is just nonsense, and the way they changed some of the main aspects of Kraven as a character feels like a betrayal to the character itself.

Kraven the Hunter Movie Review: Script Analysis

Kraven the Hunter is a comic book film that feels like it was done way back when Hollywood hadn’t nailed down the formula for them, the times of Blade, Daredevil, and so many other mishandled Marvel and DC properties. The result is a film with a script with the right tone, characters filled with intrigue and quirks that make them stand out from characters in a typical thriller, for example, but working inside a plot that goes from nonsense to ridiculous in equal measures.

Like many of the other Spider-Man spin-offs that Sony has been making, the film reimagines Kraven the Hunter as an antihero instead of a proper villain and gives him a sympathetic point of view as he goes on a rampage in search of vengeance. In terms of story, the premise is quite classic; it is in the plot details that the film can’t find any footing, and it has to rely on its characters to do the heavy lifting, which isn’t bad per se. Still, it stands out as something lacking in the film, making it not as cohesive as it should be.

The film moves on at a good pace, which is a positive, not because the elements of the plot move fluidly, but because the movie understands that staying too long in one place might reveal the seams in the plot and break the audience’s immersion, which could be easy to break if you think just a bit about what is happening on screen. Some of the dialogue also feels like fluff because there is nothing meaningful for the characters to say to each other.

However, the script does a good job of creating intrigue and putting the characters into dangerous situations. So, there is always some new action sequence with thrilling moments on the horizon, which makes the film entertaining to watch, at least while we are watching it. However, towards the end, everything sums up to a very forgettable movie.

Kraven the Hunter Movie Review: Star Performance

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been going around for a while, and his talent is apparent. However, he has found it challenging to break through since his participation in the original Kick-Ass, the film that put him on the map. Since then, the actor has been doing good work and could be more prominent if he had chosen better projects, but Kraven the Hunter is not one of them; nevertheless, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stands out as a great protagonist and someone to root for.

The rest of the cast is as solid as Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and they try to do their best with the material they have been provided. Russell Crowe does the best and stands out as Kraven’s father, making for a nice continuity between both generations of hunters. In contrast, Ariana DeBose, the only girl in the cast, makes for a striking figure during her action sequences. The rest of the cast has very minor roles, but their characters are well-defined, each a moment in the spotlight for good or bad.

Kraven the Hunter Movie Review: Direction, Music

J.C Chandor is a solid film director, and while none of his films could be called classics, they are fun to watch. They have a sense of quality to them. Sadly, the script fails Chandor in more ways than one, but he pulls through and creates a pulsing film with good tension and ridiculous moments that are balanced by his sense of style and sobriety.

Trust me when I say that any other director would have gone crazy trying to find the right tone for the film, but Chandor does it the best he can, which is enough.

Benjamin Wallfisch is a composer here, and his work is just solid. It does not really stand out the way Chandor’s direction does, but it is still a welcome addition to keep the silliness of the script in check.

Kraven the Hunter Movie Review: The Last Word

Kraven the Hunter feels like the end of an era, not only for the Sony Spider-Man spin but also for the entire superhero genre, as its returns go down and down, and audiences are ready for something new and fresh. In contrast, this feels already quite old and archaic. Aaron Taylor-Johnson shows he is a leading man and should get better opportunities in the future. Still, Sony’s correct decision is to shut this project down before it goes even further off the rails, as the Venom sequels did.

The Disney live-action remake universe continues to grow every single year in search of maximum profit, reminding people that Disney animation used to be the best of the best when it came to the medium, and now they have to get used to getting soulless live-action remakes that don’t improve anything that the originals did. Mufasa: The Lion King might be the worst of them all by wasting the time of audiences and creatives as a ton of money that could have been used to make several better films.

Mufasa: The Lion King Movie Review: Script Analysis

One of the first things that will catch people’s attention is that the film barely knows what it is doing at every point in the runtime, as director Barry Jenkins and writer Jeff Nathanson struggle to find something to care about in a story that shouldn’t exist.

Mufasa and the rest of the royal family act in such a way that they never film like real characters. The characters feel confined to their predetermined roles from the original film, lacking the freedom to evolve or engage viewers. This rigid approach stifles creativity and ultimately weakens the story, as without compelling characters, the narrative falls flat.

So, instead of telling something interesting, the film focuses much of its runtime on details that no one cares about. Sometimes, they are so worthless that the film reaches a sense of ridiculousness often not seen on screen. Then, you realize there is no vision behind the film and that everyone working in front and behind the scenes is doing this in a hired gun situation instead of putting real passion into it.

The writing is still professional, but it lacks focus and personality. Everything told on screen is something no one asks for in reality. The extinction of mystery from some of the most interesting characters in the original makes you realize the film hurts itself and the original film.

Mufasa: The Lion King Movie Review: Star Performance

Sadly, the acting might be one of the most complex elements to discuss in the film because the voices sound good. There is enough tone and texture to them; the facial features of these realistic-looking digital lions don’t allow for any powerful expression or emotion, leaving the film looking good but soulless, which is a shame because Aaron Pierre is a great actor. He should have the opportunity to do something great somewhere else.

The rest of the cast, including renowned actors like Mads Mikkelsen, face a similar challenge as Pierre, with their performances feeling underwhelming. The lack of expressive animation in the realistic 3D models leaves the emotional depth of their portrayals lacking. With traditional animation or more dynamic character movement, their talents could have truly shone, creating a much more emotionally resonant experience.

Mufasa: The Lion King Movie Review: Direction, Music

Unfortunately, the director’s star seemed to fade fast with uninteresting projects and the weird decision to focus his energies on a prequel to a remake of an animated film.

Why is Jenkins doing this film? Was it the money, or was he trying to do something unique and different? The film is visually stunning but is bogged down by lifeless dialogue and uninspired musical sequences.

Mufasa: The Lion King Movie Review: The Last Word

Mufasa: The Lion King is a film that shouldn’t exist; the prowess of its technical achievement is high, but not even them justified the existence of the movie as, on a storytelling level, the film doesn’t know which story to tell or how to tell it well, as dialogue and musical number melt into each other until the film is over, and you can finally go home and watch the classic animated version and realized just how good that one is, and how boring this prequel ends up being.

Even after over two decades, The Lord of the Rings trilogy is still regarded as one of the most impressive pieces of filmmaking ever created. Very few productions can even match a fraction of what Peter Jackson and his team did for that adaptation, and much less match it in terms of quality; only the Dune series of movies seems to come close and even so, the Peter Jackson trilogy will be one for the ages. So when Warner Bros. decided to go back to Middle Earth for a new film, everyone was a bit apprehensive, and with good reason.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Movie Review: Script Analysis

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a film based in the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien and, specifically, one paragraph about the story of Rohan, one of the main nations in the lore of Middle Earth. It is in those lines that it is revealed that King Helm had a daughter, and just from that fact, director Kenji Kamiyama and a number of writers decided to make an entire film around this long-lost princess without a name. On paper, it sounds like a good idea to fill out the lore from Tolkien, but if you are not able to match the quality of his writing and world-building, you better step aside.

This is the biggest problem with The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim; it is a movie that cannot really match the legacy it stands on, and the lack of quality in basically every regard makes it seem like no one in the production actually cared to make this a good film at all. We are in the age where animation aimed at adult audiences is blooming as ever before. Shows like Castlevania, Blue Eye Samurai, and Arcane, all of them on Netflix, are just miles ahead of this theatrical anime film that uses the name of one of the biggest brands in fiction in its name.

The writing is cliché to a fault because clichés can work only when executed with sincerity and emotion. But here in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, there is no passion behind the story, and the result is several conversations, sequences, and lines that are just thrown together, as the plot stretches every longer to fit the two-hour mark for some reason. The characters don’t really shine in any way because they are all relatively flavorless, and not having romance, jokes, or any sort of mysticism, at least in the background, feels like a move from someone who doesn’t understand the franchise.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Movie Review: Star Performance

It is very hard to fault most of the cast because it isn’t really their fault that their characters are so boring to watch. The fault lands on the writers and the director, but Brian Cox definitely steals the show as Helm Hammerhead, the mythical king whose name was given to the location that serves as the battlefield for the best action sequence in the franchise, the Helm’s Deep siege in The Two Towers. Cox brings charisma and strength to his lines and serves the role well.

However, the rest of the cast falls flat, especially Gaia Wise, who plays Hera, our protagonist. Her delivery is flat, and there is no energy behind it. The same happens with every single other character in the film. This is not to say they are bad performers, but the direction given through recording their voices was not the best, just go and watch and heat the performances in the shows I previously mentioned, and you will see this could have been so much better.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Movie Review: Direction, Music

Kenji Kamiyama is not a new guy in town, but at the same time he is definitely not a big name around. It feels a bit like a questionable move to give such a big franchise to him and his team of animators, instead of going to one of the best anime studios in Japan, and let them know that they would have the resources to create something fantastic with the material. Studios like Mappa, Madhouse, and WIT could have done better.

As it stands, the film stretches its running time by lingering too long on very unimportant things. The animation quality is truly awful, with characters barely moving at times or having just a couple of frames of animation at all. Even at very important moments, there is no consistency, and it hurts the movie a lot.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Movie Review: The Last Word

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim feels like a waste of time and money. It is an attempt by Warner Bros. to milk the Lord of the Rings franchise a bit more without putting in the effort and necessary resources to actually make something good. The quality of the animation and the writing is just too poor, and while it is nice to always go back to Middle Earth, the franchise and its legacy deserve just so much more than this.

We love scary films, and we get scared and think about what we would do if we were in those scary situations. Would we do better than the characters in those stories? Could we defeat the villain and save the day? It is all very intriguing and fun, but as more and more media is being created, it gets hard to come up with something original and execute that idea well enough. Heretic, a new horror movie, falls flat in that last stretch, even when the premise is rather captivating.

Heretic Movie Review: Script Analysis

Writing a nice script is challenging; you have to draw characters well enough so that audiences understand them in just about 90 minutes for everything to make sense; you also have to tell the story at a nice pace so no one gets bored, alongside many other challenges that the writers and directors of Heretic, Scott Beck, and Bryan Woods were not able to overcome, because it is not the case that Heretic’s script is a bad one, but that the script goes nowhere in the end.

Being able to end your movie on a strong note is vital so that people remember your movie way after the credits roll, and sadly, Heretic fails in this regard because the film builds to a mystery that cannot be solved in any meaningful way. Several monologues in the movie feel on the nose, and at times, like reading from Wikipedia, it is all interesting.

The idea of a movie that tries to challenge religion is bold, and pitting characters with different belief systems is the perfect choice if you need to start some drama. Still, Heretic doesn’t know how to make the characters clash. While it works in favor of the film’s point, it makes for a boring story to tell, as there is only one active character in the movie. We must wait for him to do everything, or nothing will happen in the story.
Without an intense back-and-forth between the characters, the ideas and concepts presented feel too shallow and tedious, especially towards the end when you think that all should come crashing down. In reality, the movie feels like it ran out of gas and is trying to find a new gas station along the way, but it does not see anything and lets the engine run cold.

Heretic Movie Review: Star Performance

Fortunately, Heretic has a fantastic, tiny, but good cast that brings the story together and makes the film worth watching.

On the other hand, Sophie Thatcher is one of the best young actresses working right now, and she delivers in a role that would make her the perfect final girl. However, the script decides that Chloe East should be the start, and it doesn’t work, not because East is a bad actress but because the script fails, and Thatcher’s character is so much more enjoyable. Topher Grace also appears for a second in a weird cameo.

Heretic Movie Review: Direction, Music

Beck and Woods might not be the best writers. Still, they are fine directors, especially when creating atmosphere and engaging visuals, which made for a fine trailer for the movie. Still, when it comes to pacing, the film struggles because it could be more uneventful. The film’s second half struggles the most as the directors go for more powerful visuals, including a fantastic trick shot, but the story might have lost a big part of the audience by that point.

Heretic Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

The music: Chris Bacon does a lot of the heavy lifting as the story tries to find something to happen in it, and so it is the music, the one thing filling all that dead space inside the film. It is correct, but nothing spectacular. A couple of needle drops here and there make for a fun Easter egg and plot points.

Heretic Movie Review: The Last Word

Heretic believes it is more clever than it is, and its mission to be clever becomes annoying and boring at times. Hugh Grant and Sophie Thatcher bring their A-game and save the movie from complete failure, so even if, in the end, it is entirely forgettable, it might be a good way to kill time on a lazy Sunday, but not much else.

Star Cast: Chris Evans, Dwayne Johnson, Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, and J.K. Simmons

Director: Jake Kasdan

Red One Movie Review Out (Photo Credit – Instagram)

What’s Good: Having J.K. Simmons as an incredible version of Santa Claus feels just right, and the message of union and love fits the holidays even if this point overplays it.

What’s Bad: The film simultaneously tries to be an action movie, a comedy, a fantasy film, and a family film, but the execution makes everything look fake and uninteresting.

Loo Break: For a considerable chunk of the second act, the characters are just running about without anything meaningful happening to them, so there is a chance to go to the bathroom right there.

Watch or Not?: Only watch if you are a massive Chris Evans or Dwayne Johnson fan; other than that, there are better Christmas movies out there.

Christmas is here, and with it, a whole new wave of Christmas content will grace our screens, including Red One, a new film produced by Dwayne Johnson and directed by his Jumanji partner Jake Kasdan. This film goes out of its way to be as big as possible. Still, it loses itself into a half-baked fantasy universe while also trying to be a family film that plays out every Christmas cliche in the book, making the experience quite frustrating.

Red One Movie Review: Script Analysis

Red One is one of those movies that doesn’t feel real, not because the film is so magnificent that it feels like a miracle that it exists, but because there is so little about it that feels authentic instead of a product with actual meaning and intent behind it. However, this has been the Dwayne Johnson formula for a while. It has undoubtedly helped him create a business empire, even if it is a little shaky at the moment, and so this is a new intent by Dwayne to catch people’s attention this holiday season.

The problem is that while Red One is undoubtedly a big movie, it also feels entirely fake, as everything in it has gone through some marketing study. They forgot to tell everyone involved in the film that they should, at least, try to make it more genuine. The script tries to find space for every single Christmas cliche in the book and also tries to create characters that feel too serious for a movie that also tries to be a comedy.

The writing feels too mechanical, with jokes that barely register and character arcs that feel too much like cookie-cutter, creating a disconnection between every film element. Red One is a movie, but it feels more like it was done checking boxes than trying to tell a story that evolves organically into what the creatives wanted.

The film moves from set piece to set piece in a world-throating adventure that feels entirely made inside a movie studio, enhancing the fakeness of the film in every single shot. When you realize that the movie budget is reported to be $250 million, it becomes a bit unbelievable that all that money was wasted on something like this, as there is no soul to it, even when every single person from behind and in front of the screen is trying to be as professional as possible.

Red One Movie Review: Star Performance

While the script had potential but didn’t execute it, the casting might be the best thing about the film, especially for Chris Evans, who lately hasn’t managed to tap his potential outside of the Marvel films. Evans became a fan favorite with his nuanced and engaging performance as Captain America, but there has been nothing to display his acting prowess outside of that.

Red One doesn’t do Chris Evans when it comes to his bad decisions in picking projects lately, but the film takes advantage of his great timing for humor, and the actor keeps things afloat for most of it. He is the story’s protagonist, so we focus most on him. On the other hand, Dwayne Johnson delivers the expected Dwayne Johnson performances, and it isn’t bad or good; it is just there, and well, for those who like him, it will be fine.

Red One Movie Review Out (Photo Credit – Youtube)

Red One Movie Review: Direction, Music

The film feels all over the place regarding its technical accomplishments, although the production values are impressive in some scenes. In contrast, in others, you can almost touch the green screen behind the characters, making all those scenes a big issue in terms of consistency: without it, there are many moments where the movie will break the immersion and send you on a tangent from which it is tough to come back.

Kasdan isn’t particularly technical or artsy regarding the composition of the shots or the way characters and concepts are introduced in the movie, which creates the sensation that this is a TV movie or a costly streaming series. There is nothing wrong with that, but a film should be more careful about these decisions because the audience feels it quite a bit when there is no intent behind the choices.

Red One Movie Review Out (Photo Credit – Youtube)

Red One Movie Review: The Last Word

Red One is one massive blockbuster that will be forgotten soon after this holiday. While everyone involved is as professional as possible, there is just no soul behind the project. So even when the movie can be entertaining, there is nothing to remember after the credits roll.

What’s Good: The gladiator fight sequences all the more because things go underwater this time, as well as performances, art direction, cinematography, background score, and nostalgia value from the original movie.

What’s Bad: Lack of interplay between the characters, a little more character development of some characters, or the establishment of the complex relationship between them would have been fruitful.

Loo Break: We wouldn’t recommend it because each moment is gripping, especially in the second half.

Watch or Not?: If you loved Ridley Scott’s 2000 version of this magnum opus, you will find the sequel as a befitting callback.

16 years after the death of Roman heroes Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) and Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russel Crowe), Rome has fallen into the reign of the twin emperors, Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger). Their rule is marked by tyranny, suffering, poverty, and bloodshed in Rome. Lucius (Paul Mescal), the son of Maximus and Lucilla (Connie Neilson), having been sent away by his mother for his protection at an early age has grown up to be a Numidian warrior having no contact with his mother. However, when his wife is killed by General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) in a Roman invasion, Lucius’ destiny gets intertwined once again with his father’s, wherein he is captured as a slave by Macrinus (Denzel Washington), a power hungry gladiator trainer and tradesman. Lucius soon realizes him becoming a gladiator to seek vengeance for his wife’s murder, and Numidia’s capture extends to a much greater purpose which is connected to his noble birth as the heir to Rome.

Gladiator II Movie Review: Script Analysis

One of the most emotionally endearing aspects of Gladiator II is that director Ridley Scott has managed to retain the nostalgic aspect of the 2000 film. The themes of duty, valor, love towards one’s country, family dynamics, and betrayals were explored intricately in the writing by Peter Craig and David Scarpa. The film does not waste time establishing Lucius’ transition from a man seeking a cold-blooded vengeance to a true son of Rome who wishes to fulfill his legacy of liberating the Romans from their suffering. In the backdrop of the deadly gladiator fights, the writing also focuses on the shrewd politics, power-play, and survival of the fittest also inside the Roman court. While the part one had Joaquin Pheonix’s Commudus showing an incessant greed, madness, and an incestuous lust, the twins fearfully transcend into complete insanity as they know that they will never win the love of the Romans compared to the likes of Marcus Aurelius, Maximus Decimus Meridius and Lucilla. We have a dilemma between duty and restoring humanity with Pedro Pascal’s Marcus Acacius.

However, where the script could have been more nuanced if we had experienced a more crisp character development for a few characters especially of that of Macrinus. His thirst for power, politics and crawling his way up through betrayals and conspiracies could be established more powerfully through a backstory. Lucilla and Lucius’ scenes could have evoked more emotions. There was a certain lack of interplay between the characters, including the complex relations between the twins.

Gladiator II Movie Review: Star Performance

Paul Mescal breathes life into his character like a storm. He had huge shoes to fill of that of Russel Crowe’s, and he does his job well. He is deadly during the action sequences but is vulnerable during the emotionally high-octane scenes. Pedro Pascal is intense, and we actually see ourselves rooting for him as his character is torn between what is moral and immoral. However, he definitely deserved a little more screen time so that we could have discovered more layers to his character. However, Denzel Washington shines bright with his Gladiator II performance as the tricky and guileful Macrinus. We are left wondering about his next move as he shrouds himself in the web of politics, betrayals, conspiracies, and treacheries.

Connie Neilson perfectly reprises her role as Lucilla. She is the kind, dutiful, compassionate and headstrong daughter of Rome who demands our respect. Joseph Quinn does full justice to his role of that of an antagonist, with his performance sometimes being a callback to Joaquin Pheonix’s Commudus. However, he skilfully adds his own touch to the performance, which yields results. But it is Fred Hechinger as Caracalla who is absolutely mind-boggling, with his act transcending into lunacy, chaos, and delusion. There is never a dull moment with him on the screen. A special shoutout to Alexander Karim as Ravi who also displays a wonderful act.

Gladiator II Movie Review: Direction, Music

The execution and overall direction do full justice to Ridley Scott’s OG 2000 version. However, it is the gladiator fight sequences that are simply heart-thumping and promise to induce the right amount of goosebumps and awe. Watch out for the gladiator fights involving wild baboons or an ocean-themed fight with two warring ships and hungry sharps lurking below the water. Gladiator II itself starts off with an intricate battle in the sea between the Romans and the Numidians. The action set pieces are the heart and soul of this movie, and the film gets it right. The background score by Harry Gregson-Williams acts as a good catalyst to set the tone of the scenes. The costumes, art direction, and cinematography are simply top-notch, which is required for a project of this caliber.

Except for a few minor flaws, Gladiator II hits the right notes. If you have loved the 2000 OG film, you will definitely love this one too.

Robert Zemeckis is one of the greatest American filmmakers of all time; there is no doubt about that. He dares to go the extra mile to create new experiences, using the latest technology and finding a way to make films different. Still, unlike James Cameron, who lives by the same philosophy, Zemeckis struggles to find a way to make his movies good, especially in the last couple of decades, as the goodwill he gained from his previous masterpieces might be running out at this point.

Here Movie Review: Script Analysis

Zemeckis takes the role of screenwriter along with Eric Roth, another great writer who just this year saw incredible success with his collaboration with Denis Villeneuve in Dune Part 2. Both of them take the challenge of adapting the original graphic novel created by Richard McGuire.

The movie tells us the story of one particular place in North America, and we see how this spot changes with the times, starting with the primordial Earth and ending in the 21st century. This is a great idea, and watching the transitions between the periods is interesting, at least during the first 30 minutes. However, the movie reveals quickly that this is all there is: transitions between characters and stories that don’t gel very well and make following the story a bit of a chore.

The original graphic novel has the advantage of being a comic, a medium where the reader can turn the page as fast or slow as they want. Alan Moore, another famous comic book writer, did the same with his novel Voice of the Fire. Still, in the same way, a reader can choose to read slow, fast, or rest whenever they like. The concept must be more convincing, relaxed, and varied in movie form.

The story jumps just too many times between periods, never staying in any period for too long, which makes it hard to connect with the characters of their stories, and on top of that, the writing becomes just too convenient and theatrical after the middle point. You can see the film struggling to justify its length, and it never entirely does it, which is sad because for a movie that is just about the 90-minute mark without credits, Here feels quite long.

Here Movie Review: Star Performance

Even if the execution of the concept is a failure, Zemeckis is lucky enough to have a great cast of actors who ultimately carry the film on their shoulders. The actors cannot save the movie from becoming monotonous, but catching all of them doing their best is worth it. Tom Hanks and Robin Wright are, of course, the best ones, and when they are on-screen, you become a bit compelled by the story because otherwise, everything is too dull.

Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly do the best they can. Still, their story is way less original, thanks to Hanks and Wright, and in the process, they don’t stand out as much, which is sad because they are excellent actors. Still, the nature of the script doesn’t translate well on screen, as all the big moments are pushed to this one room of the house, and the actors have to make it as believable as they can, but they can only do so much before the immersion breaks.

Here Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Here Movie Review: Direction, Music

Robert Zemeckis has always been daring in his filmmaking, and movies like Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, and Castaway will always be well remembered and loved. Still, recently, Zemeckis has gotten too lost in his gimmicks and concepts and forgets that while gimmicks can catch someone’s attention, they won’t keep someone in place unless that something is interesting enough. Sadly, his last ten films have been hit or miss and not compelling or entertaining enough.

Zemeckis’ direction here suffers from the same as his previous ten films, and it is so weird how he can be so blind to it, especially when we know he can deliver pretty good stories with compelling characters. The choice of not moving the camera becomes a handicap that he never manages to overcome, and it seems like Zemeckis and his team didn’t have enough creativity running through their heads to adapt the concept to the screen as it should instead of what it was on the paper.

Here Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Here Movie Review: The Last Word

Here is another Zemeckis film that needs to be more entertaining to warrant a view, as the director keeps running on gimmicks instead of just good storytelling. The actors do what they can, but the script begs to be a play, to watch live on the stage, instead of a movie that can go beyond its concept. The result is a flawed experiment from which Zemeckis will learn nothing, just as he has done in the past two decades.

The fall of the superhero genre has been slow but hard. Now, the only big success for Sony, outside of Spider-Man and Venom, is getting its last movie, or so they say, going out not with a bang but a whimper.

Venom: The Last Dance Movie Review: Script Analysis

When the first Venom was released in 2018, it was a different world pre-pandemic, where cinema was still king for entertainment options for general audiences. So, the first film, which was not good, but not wrong either, ended up becoming a huge success, a surprising one taking into account the quality of the film, and also the quality of his main protagonist, Tom Hardy, a fantastic actor who until that point hadn’t found success at the box office.

Since then, Sony has been trying to replicate the success of the first Venom film but failing miserably in the process, and this next movie doesn’t change that streak, thanks to a script that feels like nonsense and written by someone who only knows about comic books tangentially instead of learning the medium deeply, allowing for great ideas to find their way among all the absurdity that the medium is known for. As it stands, Venom: The Last Dance feels like a sad goodbye to a franchise that never really understood what it was all about.

Kelly Marcel, who debuts in this film as director, is also responsible for writing every movie in the trilogy. In retrospect, it is weird to see because she is a good writer, but comic books don’t seem to be the material she adores. So, every Venom movie felt like it was written by a hired gun instead of someone who felt a passion for the medium; this approach makes the films functional. Still, they never go the extra mile to create powerful or memorable moments.

The film doubles down on the absurd aspects of the previous films, creating a plot that makes no sense logically and expecting the audience to accept that this is how the universe works; the lore behind the symbiotes is vague. While the final act is quite impressive and even emotional, the rest of the film feels empty if not for Tom Hardy’s performance, which ultimately carries the film.

Venom: The Last Dance Movie Review: Star Performance

The entire Venom trilogy is the Tom Hardy show; he is still the one link between them and is the reason to watch these movies, especially this third film. It’s evident that even Hardy seems weary of the franchise, eager to pursue more fulfilling projects. We all hope for that because his talent is truly remarkable. For sure, these movies gave him good paychecks, but it is time to stop for Hardy and the franchise before no one can take him seriously.

Juno Temple, who is everywhere these days, also appears in the film as a mad scientist, and she does excellent, as always. Rhys Ifans is the best character in the movie, along with this character’s family, creating the best and most heartwarming moments. No one is phoning in their performances, but the material is subpar at best.

Venom: The Last Dance Movie Review: Direction, Music

Kelly Marcel debuts as director in this film after being the writer of the previous two. While solid and efficient, it feels like this is her first film because no single sequence here makes you say “wow” even once.

Kelly Marcel’s direction is just ‘fine,’ but the visual effects on the creatures manage to impress despite budget cuts, with most of the symbiote action saved for the third act. It isn’t precisely spectacular stuff, but it is fun, and all the different symbiotes that appear in the film are entertaining to watch, which makes it sad that we never go to meet them as much as we wanted to.

Venom: The Last Dance Movie Review: The Last Word

Venom: The Last Dance falls flat as a farewell to the franchise, leaving fans to wonder if the first movie should have been the last. Yet here we are, bidding goodbye to a series that seems to have lost its spark along the way. Hardy carries the film entirely with his double performance, and Juno Temple is a solid addition. In the end, the direction, storyline, and final resolution all feel like something we could have skipped, both in terms of time and budget.

DreamWorks was initially the most significant response to Disney’s complete domination over the animated film market. Initially, the studio successfully created franchises such as Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon, but sadly, the studio lost its way at one point. They ended up making a series of films that failed to connect with audiences on a fun or emotional level, destroying all faith in the studio, but now, starting with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Wild Robot, it seems the studio is back on track.

The Wild Robot Movie Review: Script Analysis

The Wild Robot is Chris Sanders‘ baby. This director started at Disney before moving to DreamWorks, where he helmed one of its biggest hits, How to Train Your Dragon. Although the journey from there to The Wild Robot has been long, Sanders proves he still has the chops to create a film that is visually stunning, funny, emotional, and exciting. With a script of his own authorship, he delivers an engaging story, despite a few stumbles along the way.

The Wild Robot begins with an entertaining but familiar premise: a strange creature finding its way into a place it shouldn’t be. In the case of How to Train Your Dragon, that was a dragon finding its way into a society of dragon-hunting Vikings, and in the case of The Wild Robot, it is that of a state-of-the-art robot finding its way into the wilderness.

So, the film spends a lot of time telling us how our main character, Roz the robot, carves a space for herself in the wild and finds friends and a purpose that she didn’t know was out there for her. On the other hand, there is also a latter section of the film that feels a bit overlooked and ends up feeling like an afterthought, not managing to take the film’s idea to its ultimate consequences or the complete emotional and intellectual impact it should have.

Other than a clear motivation or any build-up to the final conflict in the third act, the movie understands and creates a beautiful sense of emotion between the characters; it is deep, but it is never too complicated because that would only hurt the film storytelling, and as the film is trying to talk to both children and adults at the same time, it is better to remain loud and clear about everything, and in the end, the emotional bits land as they should.

The Wild Robot Movie Review: Star Performance

The Wild Robot has an impressive cast of actors who voice the characters, and they all perform amazingly well. However, Lupita Nyong’o’s performance as Roz wins the cake. The actress manages to bring feeling, emotion, and coldness to the serving robot all at once, resulting in a character that feels unique and worth following throughout the entire runtime.

The rest of the actors do a fantastic job, like Pedro Pascal, who plays Fink, a devious Fox with a heart of gold, but the breakthrough performance is that of Kit Connor, who plays Brightbill, the youngest in our trio of protagonists. Connor has the challenge of feeling believable while playing a teenage goose who cannot fly, a role that, in the hands of any other actor, could have been an annoying disaster.

The Wild Robot Movie Review: Direction, Music

Chris Sanders is a veteran director at this point. You can feel it while watching The Wild Robot, as the film makes use of everything digital cinema offers. We can enjoy beautiful vistas, cozy interiors, and breathtaking destruction scenes that impact the big screen.

It would be a disservice to review this film without acknowledging the incredible work of Kris Bowers, a young composer making his animated film debut. His energetic score elevates nearly every scene, especially during the action-packed and emotionally tender moments, bringing a new level of depth to the film.

The Wild Robot Movie Review: The Last Word

The Wild Robot signifies a major triumph for DreamWorks, showcasing its potential to compete with industry giants like Disney and Illumination by spotlighting emerging, talented filmmakers. This promising new wave is paving the way for the studio to reclaim its reputation as an animation powerhouse, one that fans can once again rally behind.

What’s Good: Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong deliver some of the best acting in 2024, and they alone are worth the ticket price.

What’s Bad: At many points throughout the film, everything feels too conventional, dulling many parts. The director lacked confidence in making the film exciting from a visual point of view.

Loo Break: The second act feels dense in a way that might be too much for audiences and not worthy, so there is the chance to go to the loo.

Watch or Not?: The Apprentice should be watched if you’re a fan of the two main actors or if you want to know Trump’s origins.

The figure of former president Donald Trump is one of legends; the man was famous for being famous way before that was even a thing with influencers nowadays, using his money to make him a character and an icon of the American way of life, but also, like with everything there are dark sides, secrets, and obscure origins that this movie, The Apprentice, tries to bring some light to, creating a very entertaining film, that lacks visual flair but balances things out with impressive performances.

The Apprentice Movie Review: Script Analysis

The Apprentice, a reference to the reality show that Trump himself hosted for many, many years, is an extraordinary film, a sort of biopic that sees itself as relevant because, in real life, Donald Trump is running for a second term as President of the United States of America, in a race that will define the future of that country more than any other in the last couple of decades, and so the film arrives at the right, and it knows it very well.

The result is a film that feels divided into two parts, two sides of the same coin, and so, on the one hand, we have a bizarre, funny, and often cute romantic comedy where we see the characters of Trump and Cohn falling in love with each other and getting into each other lives, so much that they become dirt and nail, too much of the same person in each other.

The other side of the film is a horror movie in which we see the characters descend into madness, sacrificing all their morals and values in the name of success. It is terrifying, mainly because they have so much power, and their influence extends beyond their circle of friends and family and into the public. This horror side of the movie is also very effective, and in many ways, it is the best part of the entire film.

Of course, this approach to the story of Trump and Cohn will raise eyebrows and be offensive for some people, and the film knows this, making some comments here and there about the type of reaction these two men generate in people.

The Apprentice Movie Review: Star Performance

The best thing about The Apprentice is the performances, every single member of the acting team is doing their best, but of course, Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong are just too good, and you might wonder, how do they do it? What is the secret? Sebastian Stan especially makes for a great Trump, and his bravery in taking on the role is enough to deserve respect. He keeps proving he is just the best artist and actor coming out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, going against type every single time, working on many films that are way different from anything Marvel does.

On the other hand, Jeremy Strong comes fresh out of his tenure in Succession, and he keeps impressing with a performance that goes beyond simply acting. He embodies the character of Roy Cohn, and because Cohn is relatively unknown compared to Trump, Strong has a lot more freedom in creating the character and making choices about how people will see him and judge him throughout the film.

The Apprentice Movie Review: Direction, Music

Suppose there is something that could be improved regarding the film. In that case, it is a visual mapping because the film is very bland when it comes to visuals, and sadly, this makes it a bit boring to look at, especially when the movie is mostly dialogue throughout. Director Ali Abbasi needed to find another communication layer using visuals and less exposition to make things more engaging because, as it is, the film feels like it thinks the audience will not understand most of what is being talked about here.

The movie’s lack of duality and compelling visuals drags it even more than its two-hour-plus runtime, which should be different. Abbasi gets excellent performances from his actors but might want to invest more detail and time into other aspects of his next film.

The Apprentice Movie Review: The Last Word

The Apprentice is controversial, boring, and too long, thanks to relying on exposition and trying to make everything clear, which doesn’t allow the audience to engage in the story compellingly. Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong are fantastic, and you will be paying to see them in action, and they don’t disappoint. Yet, the movie could have been so much better if someone like Scorsese was behind the camera because it lacks a unique vision from the director’s chair that drags this from the top of 2024.

What’s Good: Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga’s performance, the intensity of the courtroom scenes, the background score, the cinematography, the costume, and the makeup also continue to impress.

What’s Bad: The inculcation of the musical element in the movie ruins its essence, the placement of the song and dance number, even as a dream sequence looks like a misplacement, no nuanced character development for Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn, the soundtracks do not strike a chord.

Loo Break: Except for the courtroom scene, you can opt for a loo break, which will not cause much loss.

Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker (Joaquin Phoenix), is now serving prison time for murdering five people, including Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro) on live television. As the days lead to his trial, everyone is divided upon his motives and psyche. While some sympathize with him as a victim of his childhood traumas, others celebrate him as a martyr and a celebrity. But for some, he is downright a cold-blooded killer who is hiding behind the garb of a split-personality disorder. He meets the deranged and eccentric Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga), a fellow inmate who has been locked up for setting fire to her parent’s apartment. However, she also has some skeletons in her closet, which draws her closer to Fleck or, rather, his alter-ego, the Joker. The duo soon start a whirlwind romance wherein they promise to build a ‘mountain’ together. As Arthur’s trial begins and the statements of the opposing witnesses are revealed, his dark side threatens to retake control.

Joker: Folie À Deux Movie Review: Script Analysis

Joker: Folie à Deux director and writer Todd Phillips along with co-writer Scott Silver, think brilliantly when they decide to start the movie with an animated sketch of Joker’s ‘shadow’ entrapping him into committing some crimes for which he is ultimately captured and sent to prison. It gives a sound insight into Arthur Fleck’s inner trauma and demons which led to him transitioning into the Joker. The writing during the courtroom scenes brings out the inner turmoil and anxieties of the protagonist as he learns about a rather treacherous revelation of his relationship with his mother. However, we wish there was better character development for Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn.

Her motives for getting overly bewitched by Arthur are not delved into deeply. There was a lot of potential to delve deep into her inner psyche and bring out the motivations surrounding her actions. Her scenes were just reduced to some misplaced musical numbers. There was also room for exploring Arthur’s love-hate relationship with the prison guards, especially Brendan Gleeson’s Jackie Sullivan. The screenplay escapes the monotone of the first half and paces up toward the end, but the ending still does not evoke the riveting emotions that the original movie does.

Joker: Folie À Deux Movie Review: Star Performance

Joaquin Phoenix once again hits the ball out of the park. The pathos, frustration, confusion, and vulnerability in his performance are intact. He especially shines in the courtroom scene, and his energy is unparalleled even in the otherwise monotonous musical sequences. We just wish the screenplay and the overall execution had done justice to Pheonix’s hard work and determination into portraying the character. Lady Gaga, as the new and anticipated addition, does justice to her character. But we don’t see us rooting for her Harley Quinn because of a lousy character development and her relevance being limited to the musical sequences. However, the actress-singer shares a magnetic chemistry with Pheonix. Brendon Gleeson and Catherine Keener shine in their respective roles. It was also a visual treat to see Leigh Gill reprise his role as Gary Puddles from the OG film.

Joker: Folie À Deux Movie Review: Direction, Music

Todd Philips’s attempt to curate a riveting courtroom drama that takes ahead the story of the DC’s iconic villain was an honest attempt. It does evoke a sense of sympathy for Arthur Fleck, who was subjected to acute physical and sexual abuse, which ultimately led to the birth of the Joker. But there is no polite way of saying it was a rash idea to turn this into a musical. The placement of the musical scenes, even during the dream sequences, looked misplaced and illogical. One of the most laughable and awkward scenes has to be Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn breaking into an impromptu song and dance during a prison break scene. The soundtracks barring ‘For Once In My Life’, do not evoke a strong emotion. Joker: Folie à Deux indeed falls under the musical genre, and there were profound efforts towards the same, but somewhere, the marriage of a dark psychological thriller and a musical fell flat. But kudos to Joaquin Pheonix and Lady Gaga for being effortless with their vocals, and a shoutout to music director Hildur Guonadottir. The cinematography by Lawrence Sher is also nuanced.

Joker 2 Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Joker: Folie À Deux Movie Review: The Last Word

Joker: Folie à Deux had much potential to be as riveting as its first part. Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga shine nevertheless with the flaws of the movie. We just wish that the musical touch could have been kept at bay, or at least their placement appeared with more logic and rationale.

Jon Watts is one of those indie directors who managed to hit the gas from the get-go, delivering a fantastic police tale with “Cop Car” and then jumping straight into the biggest film franchise ever, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directing a trilogy of very well-received Spider-Man films, only to go back to the crime genre, directing two of the biggest film in recent memory, not a bad career, but Wolfs, Watts’ newest film, doesn’t feel like the natural progression the director should have taken after directing so many big films.

Wolfs Movie Review: Script Analysis

Wolfs feels like one of those very slick films that look great and have solid technical production values but lack any sort of justification for their existence. Yes, you could say that about any film, but the value of telling a story is often enough when it comes to making art in any medium. However, the story Wolfs is trying to tell here doesn’t really feel like it is worth all this money, time, and effort.

Jon Watts goes back to being a writer-director, just like he did with Cop Car, but this time he is all alone. While the premise of a couple of fixers trying to work together without killing each other sounds good on paper, it is not enough to maintain the suspense or the comedy that Wolfs wants to have throughout its entire runtime. The film loses steam pretty hard after the first act sets up all the characters and the situation, and from there, it meanders in ways that only make it evident that the film doesn’t know where to go.

A film doesn’t need to know where to go regarding the plot; sometimes, it is just enough to follow the characters through their action, but that only works if they are interesting enough. Wolfs really tries to give its two main characters, Jack and Nick, any sort of three-dimensionality. Still, it fails because the characters are only faint drawings of something bigger, and what remains are only the actors who play them.

Pitt and Clooney try to give the dialogue as much charm as possible, but the movie is trying too hard to come off as cool. The comedy doesn’t really hit as hard as the movie thinks it does, and you know what it is like when you meet someone who thinks they are hilarious but are really not. Still, it is only barely half that, and that is exactly what watching Wolfs feels like, as it is good enough to pass the time, maybe, but not good enough to be truly compelling.

Wolfs Movie Review: Star Performance

Clooney and Pitt are the reason why you should watch the film. Both actors have worked together before in the successful Ocean’s franchise, and here they feel just as good collaborating, it is their charm that makes the movie watchable at all, as the dialogue is elevated by both of them, and they carry every scene on their shoulders. Clooney especially feels like he is taking the entire job very seriously, while Pitt is going on auto-pilot, returning to the persona he has basically acquired in real life lately, a sort of tamed Tyler Durden.

However, Austin Abrams is the film’s revelation, managing to top the energy from the two veteran actors he is working with. Abrams has been doing amazing lately, playing all sorts of roles in many different films, proving his amazing range. Here, he comes off as someone who is always worth watching, even if the script doesn’t really match his energy or delivery.

Wolfs Movie Review (Photo Credit – YouTube)

Wolfs Movie Review: Direction, Music

Jon Watts has improved his craft throughout his career, and his work in the MCU has made him more confident in delivering visual splendor. Here, in Wolfs, his abilities feel right in place when it comes to delivering something that feels smart, professional, and efficient. The film might lack a bit of soul here and there, and as the film progresses, the inventiveness of the early sequences begins to fade away, but Watts is still solid enough in his choices to keep us watching.

Theodore Shapiro delivers one of those film scores meant to highlight scenes and enhance the characters’ emotions on screen without calling attention to itself. While effective, it is also quite forgettable.

Wolfs Movie Review (Photo Credit – YouTube)

Wolfs Movie Review: The Last Word

Wolfs is a film that might have had bigger aspirations at some point, but that in the end is content with being a vehicle for two big movie stars and the come back to something less flashy and more personal to its director, and yet, lacks the punch to make the impression it wants to have on its viewers because it lacks the stakes to make the story meaningful or worth telling. As it is, Wolfs is a nice way to pass the time if you find yourself without something to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

The Transformers franchise is one of the most inconsistent ones in cinemas, the franchise has gone from a legendary animated film in the 1980s to a live-action sensation directed by Michael Bay and then to the laughingstock of Hollywood with sequels increasingly more absurd and dumb. Now Paramount is trying to turn things around by going back to the start; the beginning of the war between Megatron and Optimus, in an animated prequel that is aimed at the franchise’s original audience, the kids.

Transformers One Movie Review (Photo Credit – YouTube)

Transformers One Movie Review: Script Analysis

Hearing for the first time about Transformers One was a bit scary because, at that point, the live-action films had failed at basically everything and were becoming something closer to a guilty pleasure than anything else and then with the box-office failure of The Last Knight, the franchise hasn’t been able to turn things around. Last year’s Rise of the Beast was a modest success but not what Paramount truly wanted for a movie that costs more than $200 million.

And so, Paramount has opted for a cheaper alternative. This animated film goes back in time to Cybertron and tells us the beginning of everything, and this couldn’t have been a better choice because Transformers One is indeed, a great film, one that can be enjoyed by both children and adults thanks to a solid script, good humor, great action, and second half that finally hits the nail on what the conflict of the franchise is all about, the inability to see the other’s point of view.

The film is written by Gabriel Ferrari, Eric Pearson, and Andrew Barrer. Although having so many writers in just one script is often a recipe for disaster, this time, it feels like everyone’s ideas managed to find a place in the movie without being too bloated, which really affected the live-action installments. Instead, Transformers One goes for a classic origin story that feels real and deals with very serious topics towards its later half. At the same time, the first half feels a bit too much for kids, but that must be the only sign of imbalance in a script that feels very solid and polished.

There is really nothing new in here in terms of storytelling, but that doesn’t matter; this is a kid’s film and in that regard, it does amazing at not treating its audience as if they were stupid, and besides that, the film also works as a perfect introduction to the world and the mythology of the Transformers universe, which for many has become something that feels unapproachable and confusing, so even if this is your first Transformers film, you will not feel lost at all.

Transformers One Movie Review: Star Performance

Transformers One is very lucky in that it managed to gather quite a number of big talent names for its voice roles, and none of them seem to be phoning it in, actually, everyone in the cast is taking their roles seriously, which enhances all the drama that happens in the second half of the film, and it is there that you feel that this cast is worthy of continuing the legacy of the series, if this film is successful enough to garner a sequel.

Everyone is doing a great job, but Chris Hemsworth, who plays Optimus Prime, and Bryan Tyree Henry, who plays Megatron, are really the stars of the show. Their relationship and the way it develops serve as the emotional focus of the movie, and it is great. Scarlett Johansson also does great; she adds tons of personality to Elita. Keegan-Michael Key is hilarious as Bumblebee, who still has his voice circuits and talks just a bit too much for everyone’s pleasure.

Transformers One Movie Review (Photo Credit – YouTube)

Transformers One Movie Review: Direction, Music

Paramount was lucky enough to get Josh Cooley as director, not only because he comes from Pixar, having directed Toy Story 4, but also because you can feel that he just loves the franchise. While Toy Story 4 was certainly not the best film in the franchise, Cooley’s experience directing that project comes into play here, and He delivers some amazing action sequences, along with some other more reserved moments that are pivotal to the story.

The second half of the film is spectacular, and it is everything that these Transformers movies should be; dark enough so that the audience can feel the stakes and the developing drama, and fun enough so that characters and audiences can see cool action sequences and not feel bad because of the bloodbath, or oil bath in this case. The score by Jongnic Bontemps also stands out, thanks to its mix of both classic epic melodies and synthesizers that makes everything sound futuristic, just as it should.

Transformers One Movie Review (Photo Credit – YouTube)

Transformers One Movie Review: The Last Word

Transformers One is one amazing surprise, yes, it is still a film aimed mainly at kids, but the filmmakers are really putting in the work and making every single aspect of the film have enough weight so that you, as an audience member, can feel that this is a story worth telling. The visuals are great, all actors are into their roles, and the story goes to really cool places; even if, for some adults, everything will be a bit too predictable, kids will love it for sure.

What’s Good: Tim Burton’s visual style remains unique, even when many have tried vainly to copy it.

What’s Bad: The pacing of the first half is absolutely glacial, and what should feel like 100 minutes feels like a movie running over two hours.

Loo Break: The first half of the film allows for many breaks, as not all the scenes are pivotal for understanding everything happening.

Watch or Not?: If you love Tim Burton or Jenna Ortega, this is a must, or even if you’re just looking for something light to watch.

Tim Burton’s body of work is pretty unique, as the director has gone through several phases of success and failure but never failed to stay loyal to the look and feel that made him a household name in the first place. This time, with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the legacy sequel to one of his first cult hits, the director tries to bring back the energy and visual prowess that has abandoned him in the last decade, bringing with him his usual suspects like Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, alongside his new muse, Jenna Ortega.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Movie Review: Script Analysis

If there is a big problem with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is its structure, the film takes just too much time to properly start developing characters and setting up things that will eventually pay off in the end; classic screenwriting structures are there for a reason, and while they can feel mechanic at times, some other times it is good just to follow them and mix it up with your own ideas on how the story should develop.

As it is, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice does very little in the first half to set things in motion, and it feels like it takes too much time to catch us up with what the characters were doing in the last three decades. Catching up with characters could be good in any other film, but in this one, it only feels like the movie is stretching itself up for no reason. Screenwriting should be lean and mean more often than not, but here we have too many characters and, therefore, too many subplots that only work to make the movie longer but not more interesting or charming; we only care about our main characters; the rest feel like filler.

The script does have some good jokes, and thanks to the solid performances, some jokes land better than they should. The overall plot also feels like a story worth telling in this day and age, but also feels like maybe it should have been told in another movie and not in a film about a weird diary ghost. The message does land, and by the end, the film fits well alongside Burton’s body of work.

However, it would be disingenuous to say that this movie, like many other sequels released recently, doesn’t justify its existence and feels like a movie made just for the recognizable title and the talent attached to it. There are too many films like that, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is just one of them. As it is, the film falls into too many trappings and leaves us with a story with something to say but also meanders too much while saying it.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Movie Review: Star Performance

The script and the story might be relatively weak and flawed, but the performances are quite good, especially those from Jenna Ortega and Winona Ryder, who seem to grab the movie by the horns and make it all about their own. Meanwhile, Michael Keaton, who plays the character that gives the film its name, feels relatively weak in comparison, and it might be that this is just a paycheck gig for him. It is rather nice to see Keaton returning for the role, which gives the film the sense that everyone wanted to do their best at it.

The presence of Bellucci and Dafoe also brings a small element of refinement to the entire cast, and while there could have been so much more from their characters, they do make an impression.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Movie Review: Direction, Music

Burton has been struggling to keep his signature style relevant in this day and age. However, with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the director proves that there is still a lot of style that he can extract from the source, and in general, makes the visuals the best thing about the movie. The dark, surreal, and often absurd style that made the first movie a thing to behold is still here, although some of the charm from the old visuals is definitely lost.

Burton also knows his cast very well, and his direction makes Jenna Ortega and Winona Ryder look better than ever, especially Ryder, who feels back at home dressed in her black clothes from so many years ago. It is hard to say if Burton is definitely back on top, but he might be on the way there.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Movie Review: The Last Word

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is definitely not something we expected to have. It is also a film that we didn’t really need to have, but here we have, and in general, it works, as it pushes Tim Burton’s signature style to new heights proving that no one does it as he does, and delivering cool performances from actors like Jenna Ortega and Winona Ryder. However, the script meanders too much and doesn’t get to the point fast enough, making the entire thing feel like a snore-fest, at least for the first half.

30 years ago The Crow, a film based on the comic book written by James O’Barr was released, and with it, a new classic film was born. Of course, there was more to The Crow than just being a comic book movie, as there was also Brandon Lee’s passing during the film’s shooting, an absolute tragedy that added another layer of sadness to a film that was already very gloomy, and yet, the film managed to come up on top by just being a good film. 30 years later, Rupert Sanders and Lionsgate come back to the franchise with a remake that completely misses the point of the story it tries to tell.

The Crow Movie Review

The Crow Movie Review: Script Analysis

Without any sort of hyperbole, I have to say that The Crow might be one of the worst films of the year, and the reasons are many, as watching the film delivers you jewel after jewel of bad filmmaking, and just boring storytelling overall, with a script that misses every opportunity to create expectations, and intrigue about the characters, and just goes for full angst without knowing that angst by itself is not only boring, but also quite annoying.

Maybe it is a bit harsh to blame the script so much, I’m sure that what we are seeing right now on the screen is not exactly what it was on the page, and that is normal, scripts get destroyed more often than not during the shooting of a film, and there is basically nothing that the writers can do about it. Sadly, the end result is a film that has zero sense of structure, and dwells countless minutes on things no one wants to see, it is in many ways as if the script was in its original state, a pilot for a TV series, instead of a complete script for a film.

I say this because one of the most important decisions a writer has a take when writing a story is deciding when to start the story; do it too early, and things might feel like drag, do it too late, and things will feel rushed, and for this remake of The Crow it seems the writers, Will Schneider, and Zach Baylin, decided to start things too early, making the first and second acts feel like devoid on any sense of meaningful events, which make the movie quite boring as a result.

This remake of The Crow is at a great disadvantage because we can compare each of its decisions in contrast with the original film, and in an unintended result, you will end up appreciating the original film a lot more after watching this, because the original film knows when to start the story, knows how to create emotion, and also how to draw characters efficiently while focusing the mayor bulk of the story on Eric and his search for revenge, in other words, all the things that The Crow remake decides not to do.

The Crow Movie Review: Star Performance

Because the film fails at creating memorable characters, all the actors find themselves in a sort of limbo when it comes to delivering a performance. Director Rupert Sanders has never been known for extracting the best performances out of his actors, and The Crow keeps that tradition alive, with Bill Skarsgård repeating his performance from Boy Kills World, but without the crazy context of that movie to support it, which results in a very bland performance that doesn’t ring true with the passion driven character he is supposed to play.

Meanwhile, FKA Twigs takes the role of Shelly, Eric’s love, and she, like the rest of the actors fails at creating something compelling out of the script, but sadly, Twigs becomes the worst offender, because while the other actors seem lost, she is just not a good actress. FKA Twigs’ line delivery is as annoying as it can get, and her efforts to transform Shelly into an ethereal being ends up being quite cringy. Twigs has many other films in production, so we can only hope she has been getting acting lessons in the meantime.

The Crow Movie Review: Direction, Music

Rupert Sanders is also to blame for this mess of a film, because his touch for visual splendor seems to be completely gone from this film, with some of the most boring frames ever put on screen in 2024 gracing every minute of The Crow. It is quite bad, and other than the action sequence at the end of the film, there is nothing that is visually stimulating in the movie, at all. Coming back to the big screen after so many years, with a movie like this one, might end up killing Sanders’ career once and for all.

Other than the directing, it is the editing that kills the movie completely by creating a film with such weird structure and pacing that the 111-minute runtime transform into something that feels more like 180 minutes, which makes the movie to feel more boring and stretched out, as if there wasn’t enough material to fill at least 90 minutes of screen time. Sanders also chooses to put in some of the weirdest and most out-of-place needle drops that I have heard in recent memory, and it is quite terrible.

The Crow Movie Review

The Crow Movie Review: The Last Word

The Crow tries to follow up one of the most iconic films from the 1990s by transforming the stylish, dark and moody atmosphere of the original into something that feels completely fake, without a soul, and without passion. Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs cannot sell their character’s relationship to even save their lives, and the script and the editing fail at finding structure and pacing. The Crow clearly wasn’t meant to be, and it will take audiences around the world to keep reminding Hollywood that adaptations of this quality are no longer enough to keep people on their seats.

2024 continues delivering nostalgia trip after nostalgia trip, not only with the ton of legacy sequels that studios are releasing, and remakes from old classics, but also, in forms of interquels like in the case of Alien: Romulus. The film will try to fill the gap between the legendary first and second films in the Alien franchise, a franchise that has been plagued with very lame and messy installments that have hurt the audience’s perception of it. Alien: Romulus will try to fix things by delivering probably the most violent and tense Alien film to date.

Alien: Romulus Movie Review: Script Analysis

The Alien franchise has never been known for its complex stories, if fact, the first two films are pretty basic when it comes to story, but their themes, symbols, and characters are so strong that some of them are still remembered to this date, especially, the character of Ellen Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, a character that can be easily labeled as one of the best characters in cinema history, and while Alien: Romulus doesn’t reach that kind of highs, it is still a fun ride thanks to a simple but intense plot.

In many ways, Alien: Romulus might be the simplest of the Alien films, presenting a group of young scavengers stumbling upon the wrong place and, of course, meeting the xenomorph, who just like Ellen Ripley remains as one of the best monster designs ever created. Can the young scavengers do anything to survive their encounter with the creature, that is the movie, and the plot pushes the characters into more and more dangerous situations until the final act arrives, serving as a big and satisfying climax to the picture.

However, while Alien: Romulus is quite effective when it comes to delivering thrills, it fails to create a new hero like Ellen Ripley or to create any sort of thematic commentary like the first two installments did, and in that sense Alien: Romulus feels more like a rollercoaster ride than anything else, it is a very good rollercoaster ride mind you, but the movie might find it hard to live in people’s mind outside the experience of watching it in the theater. The film is still your money’s worth, especially if you love any of the films in the franchise, but this is not the back to form of something like James Cameron’s Aliens.

Actually, Alien: Romulus feels like a more adult and gory version of what The Force Awakens was for the Star Wars franchise, a movie that plays as a collection of callbacks to its better peers, and while fun, doesn’t really hold a candle to those classics, why? Because it lacks the character depth that made those classics, and instead becomes just another exercise is nostalgia baiting, just like all other revival installments from other franchises.

Alien: Romulus Movie Review: Star Performance

Alien: Romulus’ cast is composed a by a number of young actors who all have the potential to make it big in the coming years, but because their characters are so weak, some of them definitely fall into the trap of feeling like only cannon fodder for the creature, and to allow the movie to have several kills throughout its running time. Spaeny and Johnson are definitely the big winners of the cast because their characters actually have more than just one personality trait, and both actors are definitely charismatic enough to catch the audience’s attention.

Spaeny especially seems to be on a roll this year, thanks to her work in Alex Garland’s Civil War, a flawed movie that managed to grab the imagination of America at least of a bit, becoming A24’s second most successful film at the box office. Spaeny has the looks and the acting chops to become a huge star in the next couple of years, and she can only hope that Alien: Romulus is also a success.

Alien: Romulus Movie Review: Direction, Music

Alvarez is an amazing director, there is no doubt about it, and thanks to films like Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead, he was definitely ready to tackle an Aline film, at least from a technical point of view, making Alien: Romulus one of the prettiest horror films of the last decade, and while some things are a bit too clean, and the dirt and chaotic nature of the first two films is definitely missing, Alien: Romulus does what it must do, and departments like visual effects, production design, and sound design really stand out.

The visuals are also pretty good, especially on the cinematography front, thanks to the work of Galo Olivares, who also shot the equally gorgeous Gretel & Hansel, directed by Osgood Perkins, a couple of years ago. Alvarez’s directing is on point, but he has done this movie before in the shape of Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead, and while that is quite fun, I cannot but wonder when Alvarez will level up in regard to the thematic and narrative relevance of his films, because when it comes to the technical it definitely feels like he has mastered the field.

Alien: Romulus Movie Review: The Last Word

Alien: Romulus is a fun ride, as Fede Alvarez brings all of his technical prowess to the fold in order to deliver a film that is full of tension, and thrills, and also displaying a high level of technical ability from all departments. Sadly, the film relies too much on nostalgia, and not enough on good old-fashioned storytelling when it comes to the construction of its characters or story, resulting in a film that feels more like a ride and less like an actual narrative effort. It is still worth watching, but Alvarez should level up in his next couple projects, because that can only mean a win for him and his audience.

There was a time when novel adaptations were being done left and right, and they are still a major source of material for Hollywood, especially if the novel is a bestseller. It Ends With Us does just that, and it will probably be a big success this summer as it fits perfectly in synergy with Deadpool & Wolverine starring Blake Lively’s own husband, Ryan Reynolds. However, unfortunately enough, the film’s execution doesn’t pop-off to the desired level to make it big on its own as a film, at least on a creative level.

It Ends With Us Movie Review: Script Analysis

It Ends With Us seems to be the kind of film aimed specifically to a female audience, as the story mixes romance, slice of life elements, and darker elements such as domestic abuse, but also gives it a dangerous edgy edge to it, which, at least in my opinion, feels a bit gross. However, it seems this is the formula for success as the film is expected to open big this opening weekend, but as a film, and as a story, It Ends With Us ends up lacking the punch, and the execution that it would need to stand on its own as a solid film.

One of the first things you will notice about the film is the way in which the story is being told. The story of a domestic abuse survivor, which already tells you that you are in for a ride when it comes to emotions and while it didn’t hit me at all, it is certain that for some people, especially women who sadly have been victims of these circumstances it will hit, and it will hit hard; so, there is no way to avoid the fact that this story will be powerful and impactful for at least one section of the audience.

However, the script and the way some scenes are directed walk the fine line of condemning abuse but also romanticizing it, as a show of deep passion, and bottomless love, and from the reactions some girls had by the end of the film, it seems that the abuser might end up having a group of fans by the end of the day. While this naturally seems nonsensical, the film’s producers will definitely make more money from this as the word of mouth will inevitably give this movie legs at the box-office. However, for me, it left a bad taste in my mouth, and might be one of the biggest reasons why I can’t recommend the film.

The script also fails the actors in several scenes by making the dialogue laughable, and very stiff; and while this might be a result of having a source material of that same quality, it definitely feels like this could be a chance to improve upon it? Whatever was the case, the dialogue, and the way some scenes are set up feel amateurish, and will definitely remind some people of the 50 Shades of Grey franchise, another story that also dwelled into abuse but made it look hot for some reason.

It Ends With Us Movie Review: Star Performance

If there is something that really bothered me with the film were the performances, not because they are bad but because they could have been so much better, as the subject of the film would allow these characters and their actors to really go deep into several and diverse emotional situations but for some reason, all the performances in the film felt a bit distant, and artificial, which gave the entire film a layer of soap opera execution that would be a turn-off for some, and a campy delight for others.

Lively is, of course, a charming presence on screen, and she is a very good protagonist for the project, but she seems to be still waiting for that breakthrough role that will demand from her all of her talent and discipline, but her role as “Lily” in this movie is not it. Baldoni becomes the highlight of the film on a performance level, and it makes sense as he is the villain of the piece, and he is also the director, so he definitely made sure to catch his good side every single time. Sklenar on the other hand does fine, but just like everything in the film, his role lacks energy.

It Ends With Us Movie Review Out. (Photo Credit – YouTube)

It Ends With Us Movie Review: Direction, Music

When it comes to the direction, Justin Baldoni has definitely put on the work, and he is certainly doing his best by being both director and actor in the film, which must have been a series of very stressful decision-making, and while his performance comes across as good, if not a bit problematic thanks to the undertones in the script, his direction presents itself as functional and not more than that, which is fine, as Baldoni is still early in his directing career, having only directed a couple films beyond this, but he seems to be still searching for his own style.

It Ends With Us Movie Review Out. (Photo Credit – YouTube)

The way some scenes are set up and the way they unfold feel rushed and very soap-opera like, which sadly diminish the film on a presentation level, because while soap-operas still have a lot of good stuff to take from, there is a reason people watch them, there is also a layer of campiness and cheapness that stop the art form from becoming something greater, and this is the same feeling I get from It Ends With Us.

It Ends With Us Movie Review: The Last Word

It Ends With Us walks the line between trash entertainment and a necessary cautionary tale against the horrors of domestic abuse, and yet, the script’s undertone doesn’t fail at also creating a sexy feeling out of what should only be a terrifying situation. The performances from all actors are fine, but just like with everything in the movie, there seems to be a wall that prevented the film from becoming something greater, much more cerebral, tender, and serious, which is what it should be, especially when dealing with a situation that affects so many people out there, and yet, there is no doubt many audience members will love it, but many others will hate it as well for the same reasons.

M. Night Shyamalan has had one impressive career; starting with being the new Hollywood wonder boy with the release of the Sixth Sense and then making everything fall apart with The Last Airbender. M. Night Shyamalan’s has been a true rollercoaster, but it is great to actually see him now comfortable with what he does best, and in the case of Trap, a thriller that knows how to manage expectations and then go against them while constructing a fun character to follow through the entire time.

Trap Movie Review: Script Analysis

M. Night Shyamalan made himself famous with films like Signs, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and The Village, films that were created around a cool premise to then destroy that premise with one of his famous plot twists. However, at one point the trick started to lose impact and M. Night Shyamalan found himself being predictable, which sometimes can end up being boring as well, and so after a few years of experiencing the world of blockbusters, M. Night Shyamalan has come back with one of his thrillers but one that has no twist at all, and is still quite good.

Trap is not M. Night Shyamalan’s best film, but it is proof that the director can write a solid story and have fun with it, and this is the first thing that will jump at you while watching Trap. It is fun and silly, it doesn’t take itself too seriously and that is what makes each ridiculous plot point just work, alongside a couple of very funny lines that will make you laugh with pleasure. It doesn’t really matter if being funny was intended or not, it just is, and the contrast between the humor and the darker premise make for a good combination.

Not having a big twist and actually telling you in the first few minutes of the film what is actually happening is a bold decision but one that ends up working as a huge Chekhov’s gun, meaning that an element of danger has been introduced to the plot, and now you just have to wait and see how it is going to be used. The film manages to create a fun feeling of claustrophobia around our main character, and this makes for a good contrast with the actual size of the venue where the story takes place.

However, while there is a lot of fun in the way the story is written, M. Night Shyamalan also tries, or at least it seems to, go to a deeper place inside the main character’s psychology, but this element feels half-baked, and while it explains some things about him, the amount of time used for it never seems to amount to much, and it all seems quite shallow. This alongside a meandering first half in terms of plot, make the film a bit scattered in places, but thankfully the second half brings all the good elements back into the fold.

Trap Movie Review: Star Performance

Just like M. Night Shyamalan, Josh Hartnett has had a very crazy career, starting as a leading man in rom-coms and even some blockbusters, Hartnett would later evolve into an indie actor to then disappear for a while, and come back as a character actor, able to do basically everything if given the chance, and M. Night Shyamalan has done just that, allowing Hartnett to express himself as a terrifying, calculating, but also a tender serial killer. The character is a strange combination, but Hartnett makes it work thanks to his confidence and excellent humorist delivery.

The rest of the cast does well, especially Donoghue as Riley, Harnett’s character’s daughter in the film, she and Hartnett have a lot of chemistry, and they truly feel like father and daughter. Meanwhile, M. Night Shyamalan’s own daughter Saleka also has a big part in the film, and while her acting is not the best, she does her best as this pop-star that is more than meets the eye. It is also great to see Alison Pill in a small but scene stealer role.

Trap Movie Review: Direction, Music

M. Night Shyamalan always wanted to be a sort of Alfred Hitchcock, even putting himself as a character in his own movies, but while he has never managed to be as good as Hitchcock, Trap might be his best attempt to date. The way the camera moves following the character’s sight, the way the scene always feels like ready to go somewhere else than where we are supposed to be looking at, it is all amazingly done. Yes, Shyamalan is having trouble maintaining focus or momentum in that first half of the film, but the strength of his premise makes up for it, and by the time the second half arrives you will be in it, or you won’t for the rest of the ride. Shyamalan’s rule of not going beyond the two-hour mark really helps this movie work.

Shyamalan also manages to extract some great performances from his actors here, as Hartnett and Pill are on fire, and you can definitely feel that there is a family message going on and that he really loves his daughter, making her the pop star within the film. In the end, M. Night Shyamalan’s own sensibilities as a family man are present throughout the entire movie, and you can feel that he is just that good of a guy, it might never be as elegant and efficient as Hitchcock, but he doesn’t have to.

Trap Movie Review: The Last Word

Trap is a fun, tense but also ridiculous film at the same time, and M. Night Shyamalan knows it as his dialogues just give us some true silly gems throughout the film, and yet, the premise is so strong that you will be interested in seeing how the tale will end. The performances are great, the cinematography is on point and the tone, while all over the place, fits the journey of the character itself, and all of that combined make for a good watch, so even if it isn’t totally theater worthy, a watch down the line at home seems like the perfect choice.

What’s Good: The humor is infectious, and the gore is potent, and while it may vary for some, it never goes too much in one direction or the other.

What’s Bad: The action feels too clean at times, which especially feels wrong for Wolverine’s fighting style, and the overall feeling is that the movie is just a big joke.

Loo Break: The beginning of the film might be your only space for a loo break before the cameos and the actions begin in earnest.

Watch or Not?: This film is a must-watch for all superhero fans, and even for those who aren’t, it might just be a good time at the cinema.

How the mighty has fallen; not too long ago Marvel was the king of the world, delivering one hit after the other at the multiplexes and managing to capture the best of the serialized TV series format on the big screen; but then it all fell apart when the story had a proper ending in Avengers: Endgame. Since then the franchise has had trouble justifying its existence with a series of subpar film releases. Then comes Deadpool to save the day by creating an insanely funny and violent cameo showcase.

Deadpool & Wolverine Movie Review: Script Analysis

It is hard to talk about Deadpool & Wolverine without spoilers, but for the audience’s sake it must be done, even when most of the most interesting stuff in the film is just that, spoilers, cameos, and revelations for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe; this is what really makes Deadpool & Wolverine a must-watch, something that hasn’t really been the norm for Marvel films since Endgame However, Deadpool & Wolverine manages to get closer to that level by bringing hope that the franchise is not dead.

Deadpool & Wolverine uses Deadpool’s intrinsic meta-level abilities to establish a lot of commentary on entertainment, Hollywood, and the franchise business in general, resulting in some amazingly funny jokes, for those in the known, and the reality is that the entire film feels like a big joke, both in the good and the bad ways as the movie will certainly make you laugh, but probably won’t make you care about what is happening on a plot level.

Instead, the film chooses to go the sentimental road in order to create some sense of gravitas in what is a pretty stupid plot line, but then that is exactly what we expected from a Deadpool film; a fever dream of references, jokes, and filler banter to no end. Thankfully, the cameos make for a pretty interesting watch as they are more than references in some cases, and they get involved in the story even if it is just for a bit.

The Deadpool & Wolverine storyline is scattered and inconsequential in some cases, and while it would have been great to see a stronger stance from Marvel in this movie, it gets the job done from a tone and execution point of view, as it shows that there is still life within the franchise, and that they only need to put on the work, and bring people who actually care to create a fun piece of entertainment media, instead of films that have no interest in being fun while playing in the superhero sandbox.

Deadpool & Wolverine Movie Review: Star Performance

The story might be stupid, and the plot scattered, but those issues can be put aside, thanks to the performances within the film, especially the ones coming from Reynolds and Jackman. Reynolds, for example, continues to prove that giving himself this role was the best decision of his career, as his antics fit the character perfectly. He is just hilarious and his stream of consciousness comedy is very effective, and he also can bring it home when it comes to the more sentinel parts of the films.

Meanwhile, seeing Hugh Jackman back in the role that made him famous feels just right, especially now that his suit is more comic accurate, and that his acting just nails the character effortlessly. Jackman might have been out with Logan, but Deadpool & Wolverine makes a case for him to continue to play the role even as he gets older. We really don’t need another Wolverine, and it is, at this point, almost impossible to think of another actor who could do the character justice.

Deadpool & Wolverine Movie Review: Direction, Music

When it comes to the direction and the visual presentation, Deadpool & Wolverine does feel like a step above the most recent films like Thor: Love & Thunder, The Marvels and Eternals. The film actually feels like it is trying to have some sort of visual aesthetic that feels in line with the source material, and there are many great comic book panels being recreated here, and it feels great because they are actually executed very well.

Levy has a lot of experience creating fun entertaining films, mostly for kids, so it is a surprise that Deadpool & Wolverine does gore so very well. It is never cruel though, but it goes over the line several times, completing the outrageous things characters say left and right. Deadpool & Wolverine is clearly a step-up for Levy as a director, and while there isn’t anything majestic about the action, it is done well, even if it feels a bit too clean at times, and something with more anger and rage would have been very welcome.

Deadpool & Wolverine Movie Review: The Last Word

Deadpool & Wolverine feels like something that could have come out of Marvel during their golden age, and if we are lucky and the film is successful enough, it will probably serve as a blueprint on what to do in future installments. Now that we know that the Russo Brothers are coming back as directors for the next two Avengers films, it could mean that the road to fix Marvel is already on its way, and let’s just hope that the lessons stick.
