What’s Bad: The film suffers from a weak script and an unnecessarily long runtime, with a highly predictable and overly simplistic plot. It also struggles with an identity crisis, unable to decide whether it wants to be a musical, a comedy, or an action film.

Loo Break: The film features several poorly executed songs, making them ideal moments to take a break if needed.

Watch or Not?: The film is primarily designed for children and families with kids, so it may not resonate as much with a mature audience. The visual effects are impressive, and if you’re considering watching it solely for that reason, it’s worth visiting the theater. However, waiting for it to stream might not be the best choice, as the 3D effects, arguably the film’s main attraction, won’t have the same impact.

The plot centers around a magical entity created by transforming a loyal human servant using African black magic and witchcraft. His sole purpose was to guard the treasures of Vasco da Gama. For nearly 400 years, he has waited for the arrival of da Gama’s descendant to claim it. That’s as much as can be revealed without delving into spoilers.

Barroz 3D Movie Review: Script Analysis

The script is a significant flaw due to its excessive length and weak execution. While a simple plot isn’t inherently an issue—films with basic storylines have succeeded in the Malayalam film industry, such as Thallumaala—here, the combination of a predictable plot and poor execution leaves much to be desired. The film lacks the excitement and suspense that could have been built through unexpected twists or surprises, failing to engage the audience.

The world-building also fails to convince. For example, in Goa, everyone speaks Malayalam, and there’s a plot to demolish a historic building to make way for a casino. In what fantasy world would this happen? The Archaeological Survey of India, or any other such body, would never allow this. The protesters should have come from archaeological societies, not slums.

While not referring to the fantasy elements, a good film seamlessly blends fantasy and reality. Unfortunately, the way this world is established feels flawed, even for a fantasy setting. These missteps make the film seem to underestimate the viewer’s intellect. It may be suitable for children but lacks the depth needed for a more mature audience.

Barroz 3D Movie Review: Star Performance

Mohanlal really owned the role of Barroz and did a great job with it. Maya Rao West as Isabella was also impressive and gave a solid performance. Overall, the acting was strong throughout.

Barroz 3D Movie Review: Direction, Music

The direction is mediocre, as the film includes several song segments that don’t contribute much to the story. However, it’s a promising start as the legendary actor’s first directorial venture. The fight choreography, camera work, and other technical aspects are solid. Mohanlal shows potential, and with a stronger story and script, he could create something truly remarkable. The background score is effective and fitting, but the songs themselves are disappointing.

Barroz 3D Movie Review: The Last Word

In conclusion, Barroz is worth watching once in theaters, especially for its 3D and visual effects. They will likely enjoy it if you have children, making it a great option for a family outing. Watch or Not?: If you’re looking for a realistic, emotionally charged political drama, Viduthalai Part 2 won’t disappoint. However, it might be less appealing if that’s not your cup of tea. That said, it’s a socially relevant film that everyone should watch, much like 1984, which is a must-read. The movie challenges viewers to think critically and question whether everything the media and government present should be taken at face value.

Viduthalai Part 2 picks up where the first part left off. Before delving into the plot of Part 2, let’s recap the events of Part 1. The story begins with a shocking train derailment caused by a bomb blast. In response, a police task force was formed to capture the leader of the organization responsible for the attack, played by Vijay Sethupathi. Soori portrayed a newly recruited police officer assigned as a driver in the task force.

Soori’s life takes a turn when he falls in love with a village girl from a community accused of sheltering Vijay Sethupathi and his group. As the police unleash brutal atrocities on the villagers, Soori finds himself torn between his duty and his growing empathy for the oppressed. The film culminates in Soori successfully capturing Vijay Sethupathi.

In Viduthalai Part 2, the narrative deepens as Vijay Sethupathi and the police find themselves trapped in a dense jungle after his arrest. Here, Vijay Sethupathi’s character recounts his transformation from a simple school teacher who sought justice through legal means to the leader of an armed insurgency. Through his story, the film explores how systemic injustice and unfulfilled ideals can drive an ordinary man to extreme measures.

Viduthalai Part 2 Movie Review: Script Analysis

The script is a weak point in this film due to its poor character development. The relationship between Vijay Sethupathi and Manju Warrier is inadequately explored, failing to establish a convincing emotional connection. While Vijay Sethupathi’s journey is laden with emotional beats, it leans heavily on predictable tropes and feels underwhelming despite the lengthy runtime. The lack of well-rounded character arcs is evident throughout.

Additionally, the film doesn’t arrive at a definitive conclusion, opting for an open-ended finish instead. It is likely intended to maintain its commitment to realism. While this approach may resonate with some, it contributes to the script’s weakness.

Viduthalai Part 2 Movie Review: Star Performance

Vijay Sethupathi delivers an impressive and convincing performance in his role. Soori, once seen primarily as a comedian, continues to shine as he did in Part 1. Despite having less screen time in Part 2, he leaves a strong impression, particularly in the final sequences where his inner emotional turmoil is palpable. Manju Warrier is equally convincing, and Kishore Kumar G stands out with his impactful performance. Overall, the cast delivers solid performances, making acting one of the film’s strongest aspects.

Loo Break: You can take one during the ‘Kissik’ and the ‘Peelings’ song. You won’t miss anything worthwhile.

Watch or Not?: This is inevitably a treat for all the Allu Arjun fans out there ,irrespective of some of the flaws

In one of the scenes, Srivalli (Rashmika Mandanna) proudly addresses a crowd on how her husband Pushpa Raj (Allu Arjun) doesn’t need his father’s name or origin to proclaim his identity. Pushpa has now become a ‘brand’. This very much sums up the magnetic aura of Pushpa as he basks in the very glory of his rule in almost the whole of South India. While the film does full justice to this by upping the swag, fire, intensity, and rowdiness of the character, too many sub-plots threaten to drag the pace laboriously.

Pushpa Raj (Allu Arjun) is not a fire but a ‘wildfire’ now wherein he has built an entire empire of a syndicate that helps him to run his red sandalwood smuggling chain. He keeps the powerful politicians, businessmen, police officials, and dangerous smugglers under his control and in strong alliance by giving them crores of bribes. Along with being a no-nonsense kingpin, he is also a dutiful husband to his wife Srivalli (Rashmika Mandanna) who stands as a strong pillar of support for him. However, his arch nemesis, Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat (Fahadh Faasil), is back with a vengeance and promises to be the biggest obstacle in Pushpa’s smuggling syndicate. But, apart from this, some old foes too return, and he makes some additional enemies on the way.

Pushpa 2 – The Rule Movie Review: Script Analysis

Director Sukumar along with co-writer Srikanth Vissa attempts to serve us a fine blend of mass, intensity, and entertainment when it comes to the dialogues and some of the high-octane scenes. While some definitely land and how! (hysteria and hooting alert) others fall flat. The movie definitely has a stronger first half wherein we see the varied shades of Pushpa – as a powerful syndicate leader, a doting husband, and a vulnerable man who’s still broken because of the humiliation he has faced due to his parentage. Be it him twisting the tides of politics and all of the significant conspiracies against him or tricking Shekawat time and again, there’s never a dull moment in the first half. Watch out for a scene wherein Pushpa, with his unending swag, buys out a helicopter from a dealer because he wishes to have a ride that matches his aura.

However, the film’s major shortcoming is its pace. There is too much inculcation of sub-plots, which becomes exhausting after a point and also does not flesh out properly. A cat-and-mouse chase with Shekawat, his bitter relationship with the step-brother’s family, politics within the syndicate, and the shift in power on the CM’s chair, too many things happen, which tediously adds to the pace. Any of these sub-plots could’ve been either omitted out or could’ve been wrapped up quickly. Plus, the ‘peelings’ gag to describe Pushpa’s romantic moments with Srivalli appears to be borderline cringe. After a point, despite Faasil’s stellar act, there’s no spark or growth in Shekhawat’s character arc as it also falls prey to a monotony. Not to forget, some action sequences appear over the top, barring some which are saved by Allu Arjun’s powerful screen presence.

Pushpa 2 – The Rule Movie Review: Star Performance

Allu Arjun proves why the legacy that he has created with the Pushpa franchise will be irreplaceable for many years to come. The man elevates the hard work, sweat and toil from the OG film and is just a visual spectacle to behold. There’s no guessing that he shines in all the massy dialogues and dance numbers, especially his trademark walking and the ‘Jhukega Nahi’ dialogue. But the highlight of them all is his Ma Kaali-inspired act, which appears in two significant moments in the film. He allows the divinity, madness, devotion, rage, and anger to engulf him completely in these scenes. Arjun also shines in the emotional scenes wherein his character still grapples with a deep sorrow because of his father’s family not accepting him. From a wildfire, he erupts into a massy volcano in this one.

Faahad Faasil is sheer brilliance as the conniving and crooked Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat. He especially shines in the scenes wherein he is outsmarted by Pushpa but is still hell-bent on getting his vengeance. Even though his character deserved a better graph in the writing, Faasil’s performance makes up for it. Rashmika Mandanna, as Srivalli has more scope to perform in the sequel. She’s a protective, loving, and a dutiful wife who isn’t afraid to fight the world for her husband’s honor and dignity. The actress especially shines in the scenes wherein she declares her husband as a powerful brand when he is belittled by his step-brother. The other impressive performances included of that of Jagadeesh Pratap Bhandari, Rao Ramesh, and Anasuya Bharadwaj.

Pushpa 2 – The Rule Movie Review: Direction, Music

Pushpa 2 fulfills the expectations of a massy and visual extravaganza when it comes to the direction and the overall execution, especially during the climax. Barring the pace and the irrelevant sub-plots that threaten to do more harm than good, the movie makes way for an entertaining watch. While the background score is a total vibe and acts as a fine catalyst to the plotline, the same cannot be said for Devi Sri Prasad’s music. Barring Shreya Ghoshal’s rendition of ‘Angaron Ka’, none of the songs strike a chord like the soundtracks of the OG film. The weakest tracks are probably ‘Peelings’ and ‘Kissik’ and the bizarre lyrics and choreography make it all the more cringe and unbearable.

Pushpa 2 – The Rule Movie Review: The Last Word

This Sukumar directorial does have some technical flaws, but Allu Arjun is a delight which you simply cannot miss. And (no spoilers) but it definitely ends in a ‘boombastic’ note.

And Yogi Babu’s jokes desperately trying to be funny.

Loo Break: You can take one easily in the second half. It won’t be much of a loss

Ever since Suriya’s Kanguva was revealed to be a reincarnation drama, there has been a fear that the movie might try too hard to keep drawing parallels between the two timelines beneath all of the larger-than-life action and background score. This proves to be true in the case of this Siva starrer fantasy action drama. On a quest to draw too many dramatic and emotionally high-octane parallels, the film falls flat, and the melodramatic touch becomes too jarring to bear.

Francis (Suriya) a streetsmart and conniving bounty hunter, starts feeling a strange connection with a young boy nicknamed Zeta, who has been a victim of some strange brain experimentation by the Russians. Francis feels strangely drawn towards the boy, and it is soon revealed that they have a divine connection through their past life. Francis was a dreadful but righteous tribal warrior and chieftain’s son Kanguva 100 years ago. He was dedicated to protecting the island of Perimachi, which was being eyed by the Roman conquerors. After a series of betrayals and a game of power play, he comes face to face with his arch nemesis Udhiran (Bobby Deol), the chieftain of the rival Arathi tribal cult. We soon get to know how Francis/Kanguva is bound by Zeta in his present life.

Kanguva Movie Review: Script Analysis

One of the major drawbacks of Kanguva lies in its shoddy screenplay and writing which cannot be rescued even with the magnanimous sets, costumes, bg score, and action sequences. The movie’s weakest link is the events happening in the present 2024 stage. The lousy comedic gags don’t land and instead appear to be cringe. The desperate attempt to evoke laughter through The Boys theme and the ‘Moye Moye’ track playing in the background looks even more bizarre. If this is not enough, the movie tries too hard to draw incessant parallels between the past and the present, especially in the climax, which appears extremely melodramatic and jarring. The core premise of love, forgiveness, and sacrifice, which is reflected in the bond of Kanguva and Puruva in the past, does not evoke the needed emotions. There is no development in the sub-plots of the Roman conquerors or the Russian experimentation in Zeta’s brain. The script has several loopholes that are marred further by this reincarnation aspect and the need to justify the same.

Kanguva Movie Review: Star Performance

Suriya is the sole guiding anchor of this one. He particularly shines as Kanguva and inculcates the needed fierceness, valor, strength, and vulnerability in his performance. At the same time, his act as Francis falls flat because of the lousy writing and the cringe comedic dialogues. Bobby Deol is still in his Abrar Haque mode from Animal. Only this time, instead of breaking into the ‘Jamal Kudu’ song with a glass on top of his head, he keeps on screaming and screeching each and every dialogue. The actor, though, tries to do justice to his character but ends up being significantly underutilized.

Yogi Babu’s comedic gags just don’t land and instead come across as unnecessary. And I’m still trying to decipher the need for Disha Patani in this movie. She is just reduced to being Francis’ toxic ex and a rival bounty hunter. It was laborious to see Disha and Suriya share an extremely awkward chemistry in a misplaced song called ‘YOLO.’ A special shoutout to the young child artist who plays Zeta/Puruva in the movie.

Kanguva Movie Review: Direction, Music

Barring a few action sequences like the one wherein Suriya’s Kanguva battles a crocodile or his introductory sequence, the film’s execution goes haywire. It heavily relies on melodramatic dialogues wherein almost everyone has the need to shout in the top decibels to be heard and felt. The music by Devi Sri Prasad hits a high note in the title track and ‘Mannipu.’ The background score is also effective in some of the action sequences, but otherwise, primarily, it becomes too loud and jarring. The costumes by Anu Vardhan, the cinematography by Vetri Palaniswamy, and the art direction by the late Milan also hit the right notes.

Kanguva Movie Review: The Last Word

The Suriya starrer had a lot of potential to be a well-executed magnum opus. But the lousy writing and a haphazard reincarnation parallel plot overshadow Suriya’s star power and a massive 300 crore+ scale. Look out for a cameo which paves the way for the second part but does not spark that needed excitement. Overall, we don’t know if we are looking forward to the ‘rebirth’ of this one.

We are done with the first half of the Suriya starrer Kanguva! While the movie manages to meet all the expectations in terms of the thrill and the larger-than-life experiences so far, it also has its share of misses. The film oscillates between two timelines, one of over 100 years ago and the other in 2024. Suriya essays the fierce tribal warrior and chieftain, along with his reincarnation, Francis, who is a conniving bounty hunter at the same time. The movie primarily shines during the 100-year-old sequences while is a laborious watch during the 2024 sequences. 

The plot revolves around Francis (Suriya), a streetsmart and badass Goa-based bounty hunter who starts having flashes of his past life after meeting a mysterious child, Zeta, who results from a dangerous brain experiment by the Russians. The child is revealed to have a connection with Francis’ past life. It is also shown that Francis was a deadly and righteous tribal chieftain, Kanguva of the Perimachi clan, 100 years ago. He is not afraid to rage a war to protect the innocent people of Perimachi. By the end of the first half, Kanguva braces himself to face the rival tribal chieftain Udhiran (Bobby Deol) of the Arathi clan. 

The film has its high moments in the tribal sequences. We are quickly invested in the mysteries and values of the 5 islands, which attract the attention of the Roman conquerors. The movie delves deep into the themes of forgiveness, loyalty, love toward one’s homeland, and betrayal. Suriya roars like a lion as Kanguva. He is deadly and fiery in the action sequences while also showcasing his vulnerability in the emotionally high-octane sequences. The superstar gets a stellar introductory scene with a backdrop wherein Kanguva’s valor and praises are sung.

Bobby Deol is meaning and ravaging in his act, but you get a callback to his Abrar Haque from Animal, and we hope to see a diverse shade in his performance in the second half. However, the movie falters in the scenes from the 2024 era. The comedic gags don’t land with even Suriya’s comic timing looking forced. Both Yogi Babu and Disha Patani‘s performances are heavily over-the-top and caricaturish. A romantic dance track, YOLO, looks hugely out of place. Devi Sri Prasad’s background score also impresses me. 

We hope the second half will focus on the battle sequences and how Francis will finally recognize his duties from his previous life. The movie also fears falling prey to some melodramatic performances and sequences. We also hope the second half balances this out.

If someone had approached this with a ‘woke’ perspective, Baskhar’s father might not have existed, and his wife would have taken on his role instead. Direction is one of the most crucial elements in any film, as the director’s role is to unify all aspects of the production. Aside from minor hiccups and a few logical errors that only the most observant viewers might catch in Lucky Baskhar, everything else comes together quite nicely. Writer-director Venky Atluri truly shines in this regard. He expertly navigates the challenges of setting the film in the early ’90s.

The music also significantly enhances the film’s overall feel. Compelling music should complement the viewing experience without being overly noticeable; in this case, it perfectly strikes that balance. The score elevates the emotional moments and creates the right ambiance when needed. Kudos to G.V. Prakash Kumar.

The plot of Bougainvillea is straightforward. A young woman, the daughter of a politician from Tamil Nadu, goes missing while studying in Kerala. During the investigation, the police discover that several other young women in their early twenties have also disappeared under similar circumstances. Jyothirmayi’s character, Reethu, becomes the prime suspect. Reethu suffers from memory issues and struggles to recall everything. The film is overly long for its good. Kunchacko Boban’s character, Dr. Royce Thomas, is portrayed as a caring and devoted husband. The central question is whether Reethu is involved in these disappearances and, if so, to what extent.

In the first half, the script feels weak as the character establishment drags on for too long. However, it picks up in the second half and does its job effectively. Introducing characters and their behavioral patterns felt authentic, with interactions and dialogues that were true to life. Kunchacko Boban’s character needed more depth, as he wasn’t well-established or fully developed. The script, written by the director alongside Lajo Jose and R.J. Murugan, works but could have been stronger.

There are few standout characters in this film, but those present do their jobs well. Jyothirmayi’s portrayal of Reethu is a true masterpiece—her performance is utterly convincing, capturing the essence of her character with skill. On the other hand, Fahadh Faasil, who plays the investigative officer David Koshy, needs to be more utilized. There is little for him to do in this role, and it feels like a missed opportunity for an actor of his caliber. I’m not referring to his stardom but rather his talent as a performer, which isn’t fully tapped into here.

Srinda, playing Rema, the domestic help, is also convincing in her role. She delivers a strong performance and deserves more character roles like this, showcasing her potential. Similarly, as Meera, the psychologist, Veena Nandakumar does a fine job. She convincingly expresses fear and the shifts in her character’s mood, adding depth to her role.

Directed by Amal Neerad, best known for his crime thrillers and action dramas, this film sees him deliver an average performance. It could be more outstanding, mainly due to the slow pacing in the early part of the film. One of the main issues lies with the music. Fahadh Faasil‘s introduction is marred by a poorly executed background score, which detracts from the scene’s impact. A film can only be delightful if all aspects come together, ensuring that is the director’s responsibility. In this case, Neerad needs to improve, especially with a weak script and subpar music by Sushin Shyam.

Shyam, who is not a newcomer to the industry and has delivered some impressive work in the past, needs to catch up here. While his previous compositions have been great, his contribution to this film is underwhelming. Overall, the direction in the first half feels lackluster, but the second half feels like a different movie altogether. Many earlier mistakes are redeemed, though flashbacks could have added more depth if handled better.

Athiyan (Rajinikanth) believes that cold-blooded criminals only deserve one punishment: a brutal police encounter. He strictly adheres to this, much to the annoyance and resistance of senior judge and human rights lawyer Sathyadev Pande (Amitabh Bachchan). Along with a con man-turned-police informer, Patrick (Fahadh Faasil), he solves many cases, which end with him encountering the criminals. When Sharanya (Dushara Vijayan), a dutiful teacher, is raped and murdered, Athiyan takes it upon himself to bring her justice. The ‘perpetrator’ is also captured and killed, but it is soon realized that the real culprit is someone else. Not only does Athiyan battle with his inner conscience for having killed an innocent, but he has now to find the real person behind this heinous crime.

Vettaiyan Movie Review: Script Analysis

Director and writer TJ Gananavel, along with co-writer B Kiruthika, has crafted a riveting actioner that will keep you hooked until the end. The storyline questions the morality of police encounters, showing two sides of the story. The themes of crime against women and education scams are also well-highlighted. In the middle of this, the dialogues are catchy and complement Thalaiva Rajinikanth’s star power well. The script has subtle details that are bound to generate whistles and claps. A prime example is a throwback to Rajinikanth and Tamannaah Bhatia’s track ‘Kaavaalaa’ in one of the scenes. However, the movie stretches in the second half towards the climax. Another loophole is the half-baked police investigation scenes. The plot also falls prey to some predictability in the second half, but the execution remains entertaining.

Rajinikanth is at it again! Right from his entry to the dialogue delivery, the countless whistles and cheers were intact. There is never a dull moment with him on the screen. It can be safely said that he was the main guiding anchor for this one. Fahadh Faasil is another cast member who shines throughout the movie. He was entertainment personified in this one and truly one of the standouts, as always. Dushara Vijayan, Ritika Singh, Rakshan, Kishore, and Manju Warrier do full justice to their characters. However, Amitabh Bachchan and Rana Daggubati are underutilized. Even though they give the best to their characters, we somehow needed more of them. Even with their limited screentime together, it was joyous to witness the chemistry between Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan after 33 years.

Except for some loopholes and a laborious pace in the second half, Vettaiyan keeps the entertainment factor rolling with the direction. The mass appeal does not cause any hindrance to the message of the movie. This balance is often lost in many commercial films, but not in this one. Anirudh has done it again! The background score for Rajinikanth is goosebumps galore and creates more impact than the actual songs of the movie. The cinematography by SR Kathir captures the beauty of Kanyakumari well.

Vettaiyan manages to be a treat for superstar Rajinikanth’s fans, and that mainly fulfills its purpose. A huge shoutout to Fahadh Faasil for also being a show-stealer in many of the scenes.

Set in the 1980s and 1990s, Devara: Part 1 is about Devara, a man from a coastal village who sets on a danger-ridden journey into the sea to safeguard the lives of his people. His brother Bhaira would rather be selfish and conspires against Devara. Will Devara’s timid son, Vara, be enough to counter Bhaira?

Devara Part 1 Movie Review: Script Analysis

The script by Koratala Siva makes it clear that it is all about unlimited audience gratification. The story is about the good versus the bad among the folks of four adjoining small fishing villages. There is one man, Devara (NTR Jr.) whose statement is like an order (I remembered the iconic line from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… that went ‘Jo keh diya, bas keh diya!’ though the similar line here is not as memorable!). But he is a good man, though he and his tribes initially indulge in what they do not know is illegal and antinational—at sea.

When he realizes what they are doing is wrong, he orders the entire community that works for him not to contribute to elements out to create anarchy. Naturally, Bhaira now wants to eliminate him. A plot is hatched when Devara has agreed to come to Rayappa (Shrikant)’s blind sister’s wedding. Assailants by the dozens attack Devara at a beach. Still, he fights valiantly back and finally leaves a message (in the blood of his victims) on the rocks that he is leaving the village to keep an eye on the anti-national and wayward elements.

Twelve years later, we get to see his son, Vara (NTR Jr. again), who has grown up listening to his father’s tales of valour but is exactly the opposite in nature. Unlike his courageous father, who can take on over twenty armed adversaries at once, he even drugs his competitors at the village to win the annual ritual of puja for weapons, where the winner takes the weapons to his village.

Due to a chain of incidences, Vara has to join Bhaira in restarting the nefarious activities of stealing contraband and must be a part of Bhaira’s team that also simultaneously must kill his father, who is expected to come from hiding and prevent them from achieving their criminal mission—to appease the businessman (Murli Sharma) and the corrupt cop (Abhimanyu Singh) who hire them.

This story, in fact, is narrated by Singappa (Prakash Raj), a confidante and admirer of Devara, to a present-day officer who has come to search for a criminal. And the film cleverly ends with a poser a la Bahubali—we now come to know that Devara is no more. He had warded off all his attackers, but a surprise, devoted-to-him entity had killed him. Why did that person kill Devara is what will be answered in Devara Part 2. After a rollercoaster of incredibly sustained action, blood-splitting and the occasional stir of a cauldron of emotions, the poser ends the movie.

But I must admit that the script could have provided more importance to its women. There is some attention on Devara’s mother (Zarina Wahab), on another grieving woman who loses her son, but Janhvi Kapoor as Vara’s beloved and even Devara’s wife (Shruti Marathe) barely count in the story’s plotline.

As for logic—what’s THAT?! So don’t even ask all the dozen and more questions you want to!

Devara Part 1 Movie Review: Star Performance

NTR Jr. is now known to Hindi cinema not just because of RRR but also for his forthcoming role in War 2. He has played to the gallery with full vigor and intensity, and his naturally likable persona holds the film totally, though regrettably, he gets no chance to ‘face’ himself (as in his dual characters).

Saif Ali Khan has by now mastered the art of villainy for 20 years (Cyrus and Ek Hasina Thi being the first, down to Omkara, Tanaji: The Unsung Warrior, and—in the South—Adipurush). Here, he brings in the subtlety that we witnessed in the first two films and the vicious and rustic ruthlessness of his role in Omkara. Shrikant as Rayappa and Narain as Kunjara’s son impress among the rest.

Prakash Raj is excellent as Singappa, while Zarina Wahab is the typical long-suffering mother of Indian cinema. Rameshwari as Jogula, Shruti Marathe as Devara’s wife, and the other women are wasted. But no one is ill-used more than Janhvi Kapoor as Thangam, who is just given a less-than-ten-minute screen time (with one song) as a libidinous girl lusting for Vara.

Koratala Siva writes for the director in him and directs for the writer in him! The film can perhaps be best described as an orgasmic exposition of mainstream masala movie-making, The scale is gargantuan, and R. Rathnavelu’s frames are as magical as A. Sreekar Prasad’s cuts, Sabu Cyril’s production design and the fantastic background score by Anirudh Ravichander.

However, Anirudh’s songs do not make the slightest impression, and the lyrics by Kausar Munir and Manoj Muntashir do not help.

Only some weeks ago, we had another barrel of unmitigated entertainment with a father-son dual role for the superstar Thalapathy in G.O.A.T. This time, NTR Jr. scores much better, ditto the film. It’s long but does not seem so at all.

Uranium is retrieved by four fast friends led by Gandhi (Vijay), who are furtive (as in unknown to their respective families) comrades in SATS (Special Anti-Terrorism Squad), which we are told is a division of RAW. This is done from a speeding train in Kenya in 2008, and one of the culprits involved is a renegade intelligence officer, Rajiv Menon (Mohan), who is killed when the train explodes.

Soon, Gandhi’s wife Anu (Sneha Prasanna), who is pregnant, comes to know that he is a part of such a dangerous force, and to placate her, he takes his five-year-old son, Jivan, and his wife to Thailand and Pattaya when they have to go there on a mission.

But things go wrong there, and even as Anu delivers a daughter, Jivan is kidnapped and later found dead, his body burnt.

Shattered, Gandhi leaves active service and takes a desk job at Chennai airport. He now lives alone, and his wife Anu and daughter Jeevitha (Abhyukta Manikandan) are separated. But when his ex-boss, Naseer (Jayaram), sends him to Moscow to train officers at the Indian Embassy, it comes under attack, and among the miscreants, Gandhi discovers a young lookalike of himself. Soon, it is found that it is Jivan, his son, who is not dead. A joyous Gandhi brings him back even as Jivan warns him that there is a dangerous gang looking to kill Gandhi.

Back in Chennai, the family had a happy reunion. But trouble starts soon, as Naseer summons Gandhi for a secret meeting but is killed by a masked man in front of Gandhi’s eyes. Next up is a colleague who is murdered even as the SATS team is looking for Naseer’s missing mobile phone. Finally, Jivan’s childhood sweetheart, Srinidhi (Meenakshi Chaudhary) is murdered.  And it turns out that Rajiv Menon, who is very much alive, has planned an elaborate revenge on Gandhi and the SATS team.

In Maharashtra, there is a dish named Ghadaa, which includes any and every possible ingredient, such as vegetables, pulses, and even seafood. The corresponding item in Gujarat is the famous Undhiyo, a similar cocktail of multiple vegetarian ingredients.

I state this because the script of this film is just like these two dishes—it has simply everything in it! And whenever the dots cannot be connected by logic, we get illogic without hesitation.

Family sentiments, laughter, and one-liners, secrets, twists every now and then, exotic foreign locations, lavish song-and-dance numbers, science, technology, expensive VFX, impossible stunts, mammoth action, and, of course, chases (including a scene where a biker chases an underground train!) are dished out consistently and relentlessly after the initial extravaganza in a train that opens the film.

The script is thus completely cooked up and even over-boiled to serve entertainment, entertainment, and entertainment—with each of these three words underlined and in bold fonts and italics! It does not bother that it is stretching to a voluminous length as the idea is also to glorify a 50-year-old star icon, that too with a lot of de-aging used.

Vijay obviously rocks the show—and how! The intensity of his gaze may resemble Anil Kapoor’s a wee bit, and he just plays completely to the gallery in every step (dance), mood, or stunt. There is nothing literally that he cannot do, and come, Gandhi or Jivan; he has the kind of vitality that could be just right for a post-health tonic effect advertisement. He is extraordinary when he breaks down on seeing his son’s charred remains and later when he breaks the news to his wife, who has just delivered a baby girl. But he also does manic acts well whenever Jivan is placed under various extraordinary circumstances.
Prabhu Deva is as effective as his colleague Kalyan, but I preferred Prashanth more as the staid Sunil. Ajmal Ameer, as Ajay, the fourth colleague, has nothing much to do, but Jayaram, as Naseer, is effective. Mohan, as Rajiv Menon, does what is expected of him. As Diamond Raju, Yogi Babu is his usual self.

The women are ornamental at best, disposable at worst, and have really nothing to do. Of course, most of them provide glamour and skin shows.

This is definitely one of those critic-proof films like Jawan and Animal last year. It keeps the undemanding viewer and hardcore fan entertained, and even in its inordinate length, largely maintains a sufficient interest level to make other viewers keep hoping for something fresh to come up—until the end.

Director Jeethu Joseph’s “Nunakuzhi” is a blend of entertainment and humor. While it’s a comedy, it avoids falling into illogical territory. The film successfully meets its goals, adding well-cast characters to its charm. The audience response has been positive, with many viewers laughing out loud at the perfectly timed jokes.

“Nunakuzhi” weaves three distinct storylines and a chaotic fight sequence into a hilariously engaging adventure. Set over the course of a single day and night, the film follows a couple on the brink of divorce, a managing director of a conglomerate, and a group of three drunken film industry personalities and a civil servant—a drunk actor, producer, writer-director, and the writer-director’s equally inebriated income tax officer uncle—who gather under the guise of discussing films. As the police get involved, the chaos intensifies, bringing these storylines together in a comedic narrative that sets the stage for a potential sequel.

The story starts with an income tax raid on Basil Joseph’s office, part of the empire his father built across multiple industries. Basil, more preoccupied with his love life than the family business, is caught off guard when tax authorities confiscate his personal laptop, which contains compromising footage. Pressured by his wife to retrieve it immediately, Basil embarks on a series of unfortunate and comedic misadventures in his quest to recover the laptop.

Billed as “Hindustani” or “Indian”, Veerasekaran Senapathy, 28 years ago, is still alive and kicking (in far-off Taipei) practising and teaching Varma Kalai. This Tamil traditional art combines massage, alternative medicine, traditional Yoga and martial arts. He is summoned by a group of Indian social media vigilantes who have named themselves “Barking Dogs” (who don’t bite in theory!) who are furious about the various evils happening in the state. They make the hashtag #ComeBackIndian go viral globally and he responds. Though he is located far away, the cops come to know he is coming back, and a trap is laid right at the airport. But the old man is too smart for them of course—and continues to be so at every step in the long 180-minute film.

Senapathy (“Universal Star” Kamal Haasan, of course!) recommends that each and every honest young Indian (he says on social media that people over 40 need not hark at what he says, for really unknown reasons!) start cleaning the system of the country by cleaning their own homes first of corruption and wrongdoings. Later, this almost tilts the scales against him.

Indian 2 Movie Review: Script Analysis

Writer-director S. Shankar spins a super-entertaining cocktail, 1990s fashion, of vigilantes and their thankless jobs of cleaning up society. The Barking Dogs comprise of Chithra Aravindan (Siddharth, named after his mother for a reason), Aarthi (Priya Bhavani Shankar), Thambesh (Jagan) and Harish (Rishi). While the “Barking Dogs” can just use technical razzmatazz to make people realize what and who are evil, Senapathy, when he reaches India, begins to dole out exemplary punishments to major offenders across the nation, like Krishna Mohan (Delhi Ganesh) in Chennai, Darshanbhai (Zakir Hussain) in Gujarat and Kishan Singh (Piyush Mishra) in Punjab.

Meanwhile, the four friends from the Barking Dogs group have their skeletons in the family cupboards and set about correcting their family members or getting them booked by law. In the process, their families break up, and the four are disowned. Soon, they turn against Senapathy, but he is unfazed.

In Part 1, ace cop Krishnaswamy (Nedumudi Venu) had tried his best to arrest Senapathy but failed. This time, he has retired, and his place is taken by his son Pramod (Bobby Simha with a dubbed voice—is it Prabhas?), who dreams of fulfilling his father’s ambition. The interactions between the dogged cop and Senapathy come up at intervals and are quite thrilling even if predictable in outcome. It is only in their final chase that the script completely loses its logic. But the twist of the hard bargain that Senapathy drives with Krishnaswamy for Pramod’s life makes for a nice finish.

Indian 2 Movie Review: Star Performance

Kamal Haasan proves that loads of makeup and prosthesis cannot detract from his giving a solid performance. His eyes and his excellent modulation of tone carry the day and his command over Gujarati and Punjabi is incredible. He gets good support from the smaller artistes. Those who shine include S. J. Suryah as Sarguna Pandian, Bobby Simha as Pramod and Vivek as Elango, but the best performance comes from veteran Samuthirakani as Chithra’s father.

As for the four youngsters, they are very good too, especially Siddharth as Chithra, Priya Bhavani Shankar as Aarthi and Jagan as Thambesh. Rakul Preet Singh is almost in an extended (!) blink-and-miss appearance while the major ‘baddies’ come across as comic more than villainous for reasons that have to be watched in the film.

Indian 2 Movie Review: Direction, Music

S. Shankar uses all the modern techniques like Motion Capture apart from animation, besides CGI and all else, to create a stylized world of vigilantes and vendetta, and his visuals are indeed graphic in detail. The shooting of the “Calendar song” featuring Gulshan Grover and Demi-Leigh Tebow is magnificent indeed. As far as drama is concerned, he excels, especially in the sequences following Chithra’s mother’s death. But there are many other emotional moments, too.

Anirudh Ravichander’s music is all about sound, and the melody is only occasionally catchy. But his background score is superlative.

Indian 2 Movie Review: The Last Word

Kamal Haasan fans will obviously go berserk over this film. But if you are one of those for whom entertainment means a classic Indian movie with action, drama and emotions, you will enjoy it too as a one-time watch with a sequel (said to have been shot simultaneously) to come.

Kalki 2898 AD is a post-apocalyptic mythological drama set in the ruined city of Kashi. The once-majestic Ganga River is dry, and there is no sight of food or water. Humanity has degraded to the point where people sell each other for survival units. The city is ruled by Supreme Yaskin, who runs a mysterious Project K involving pregnant women for an unknown experiment. Meanwhile, the people of Shambala await the arrival of a god who will save humanity. The story is inspired by the Hindu mythology of Lord Vishnu’s final avatar, Kalki, who appears at the end of the Kali Yuga.

Kalki 2898 AD Movie Review: Script Analysis

The story begins with the final moments of the Mahabharata, where Ashwatthama (played by Amitabh Bachchan) kills the unborn child of Uttara (Abhimanyu’s wife), ending the Pandavas’ lineage. Lord Krishna curses Ashwatthama to live forever until the end of Kaliyuga to protect his last avatar, Kalki. The narrative then shifts 6000 years ahead to Kashi, now a desolate land devoid of its former beauty and religious significance. People are reduced to mere units, fighting and killing for survival.

We are introduced to Bhairava (played by Prabhas), a careless and self-obsessed bounty hunter whose sole aim is to earn units. He is portrayed as an opportunist who aligns himself with whichever side offers him the most profit. The first half of the movie focuses on Bhairava’s antics and his impressive vehicle, Bujji. Simultaneously, we see a lab in the Complex where Supreme Yaskin’s men extract serum from pregnant women held captive in different cells. These elements contribute to the world-building of Kalki 2898 AD. While Prabhas’ entry sequence and the lab scenes are engaging, the unnecessary humour and song sequences distract from the narrative.

Too much time is spent showcasing Bhairava’s unhinged nature, with comedic sequences slowing down the story. Random conversations between Complex workers and Bhairava and his house owner add little to the plot. Despite the distressing view of Kashi, Bhairava is shown drinking and dancing, which feels out of place. Thankfully, the interval block picks up the momentum, leaving viewers curious about how the saga will progress.

The second half of Kalki 2898 AD showcases Nag Ashwin’s brilliance in keeping viewers immersed in the tale. Ashwatthama takes centre stage again as he must protect the pregnant Sumathi (played by Deepika Padukone). The fight sequences featuring Ashwatthama and Bhairava are exceptional, finally presenting the clash of titans. This is just a teaser, as the narrative intensifies towards the end, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats.

Although the second half is enjoyable, it is apparent that Nag Ashwin has drawn inspiration from movies like Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, and Star Wars for the fight sequences. However, once these sequences are over and the Mahabharata flashbacks take centre stage again, viewers can’t help but be mesmerized by the blend of past and present.

Kalki 2898 AD Movie Review: Star Performance

Amitabh Bachchan truly shines as Ashwatthama. The movie begins with him, and he leaves a significant impact after the interval and during the climax. His powerful screen presence and commanding portrayal of Ashwatthama are commendable. Despite the stunt double performing the fight sequences, Amitabh’s determination and fiery emotions on screen are praiseworthy.

Prabhas’ Bhairava has shades of Baahubali’s Shivudu and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man—unserious, full of himself, and tone-deaf. The actor delivers a good performance, especially during the climax sequence. Prabhas’ camaraderie with his AI vehicle, Bujji, is entertaining. In a movie that tries to force a romance between Prabhas and Disha Patani, the chemistry between him and Bujji is endearing.

Deepika Padukone’s SUM-80, aka Sumathi, is reminiscent of her character in Jawan. Here, she is pregnant in the Complex’s cell, similar to her role in the 2023 film where she is pregnant in jail. Though her dialogue is limited, Padukone’s expressive eyes help us empathize with her character. Kamal Haasan plays Supreme Yaskin, the tormentor of human souls. While his screen time is limited, his lifeless body and cruel intentions make for a promising portrayal. Saswata Chatterjee, as Commander Manas, also stands out. With a smile on his face, he commits ruthless acts and delivers bitter lines.

Kalki 2898 AD Movie Review: Direction, Music

Kudos to Nag Ashwin for blending Hindu mythology with a modern apocalyptic saga. The director had a clear vision of the dystopian world he wanted to present. However, in focusing on Bhairava’s character, he sometimes derails the intriguing elements of the first half. Nonetheless, Nag utilizes each actor to their full potential, leaving viewers curious as the saga has not yet concluded. The inclusion of Mahabharata scenes helps connect the movie’s current situation with its mythological roots. It is evident that the director is inspired by Hollywood franchises like Star Wars, Mad Max, the MCU, and Dune.

I watched the movie in 3D, and the visuals look outstanding. Djordje Stojiljkovic’s cinematography masterfully captures the bleak and depressing atmosphere of the apocalyptic world. His skilful handling of the camera, especially during the intense fight sequences, ensures a steady and engaging visual experience without any shakiness.

Santhosh Narayanan’s music is used exceptionally well in the second half. In the first half, apart from Bhairava’s theme song, the music does not elevate the narrative. The song featuring Prabhas and Disha Patani could have been completely avoided.

Kalki 2898 AD Movie Review: The Last Word

Overall, Kalki 2898 AD is an ambitious and visually stunning film that blends mythology with a dystopian future. While it has its flaws, particularly in the first half, the movie shines in its action sequences, performances, and overall storytelling. Nag Ashwin’s vision and the stellar cast make it a compelling watch, leaving the audience eager for the next instalment.

What’s Good: The fight choreography and visuals, especially with Mammootty, are genuinely electrifying. Mammootty‘s precision and stylish delivery of knockout punches make every fight sequence a thrilling spectacle! The Hollywood pop culture references, like Turbo Jose’s mother mourning Tony Stark’s death or a local don channeling Vito Corleone with a similar mustache, clothing, and demeanor, add fun and nostalgia to the movie.

What’s Bad: The movie had a few plot holes towards the end and lacked iconic music. Although the soundtrack was good and served its purpose, it had no standout tracks that left a lasting impression. In some scenes, a turbo spooling noise and horn sound are used as background sounds for Mammootty’s character before he appears. This felt out of place because no one in a crowded festival or a two-story house would hear that noise and stop everything to look at the road.

Loo Break: It’s best to avoid taking a break during this film. However, if you must, try to do so during the interval.

Watch or Not?: This film is a must-watch for action movie buffs seeking heart-pounding fights and jaw-dropping visuals! With Mammootty’s electrifying performance, it’s a rollercoaster of excitement from start to finish.

Turbo Jose, played by Mammootty, is a troublemaker in his hometown. After an attack on his friend Jerry, played by Shabareesh Varma, Turbo Jose discovers that Jerry’s girlfriend, Indulekha, played by Anjana Jayaprakash’s family, was behind the assault. They orchestrated the attack to scare Jerry away and marry Indulekha off to another man. Without Jerry’s consent, Turbo Jose decides to help Indulekha escape her family to reunite with Jerry. However, when they arrive at Jerry’s home, Jerry denies knowing Indulekha, lying to protect himself.

Now, Turbo Jose is wanted for kidnapping Indulekha and attacking her family, which includes several military personnel. To let things cool down, he moves to Chennai. In Chennai, where Indulekha and Jerry work at different banks, Jerry uncovers a massive conspiracy involving Vetrivel Shanmugha Sundaram, played by Raj B. Shetty.

Much like his previous works, the script by Midhun Manuel Thomas contains some plot holes, although they are fewer in number compared to his earlier movies. However, what sets this script apart is its effectiveness in keeping the plot less predictable. Additionally, the dynamics between the characters are unique, adding an intriguing layer to the storyline. Overall, the script offers a fresh perspective and a refreshing departure from the usual tropes of the genre.

At the age of 72, Mammootty portrays the character of Turbo Jose and delivers a commendable performance in the fight scenes, exuding the vigor and vitality of a man in his late 40s. Raj B. Shetty, as Vetrivel Shanmugha Sundaram, impresses with his intimidating presence, although his physicality falls short in establishing him as an equal adversary to Mammootty, which is especially evident in the final fight sequence. Notably, Nepolean in “Devaasuram” (1993) is a prime example of a formidable antagonist. Sunil, portraying a local Don with shades of Vito Corleone, provides effective comic relief. In simple terms, the direction by Vysakh was commendable, with well-executed fight sequences and successful incorporation of comedy and pop culture references. However, the film needed more emotional depth, failing to establish a strong connection between the audience and the characters on screen. As a result, when pivotal moments like deaths occurred, there was a notable absence of emotional impact, a significant flaw in the director’s approach. Additionally, Some of the murders were depicted brutally, effectively instilling fear and hatred towards Vetrivel Shanmugha Sundaram.

The music by Christo Xavier is solid, effectively fulfilling its role in enhancing scenes throughout the movie. However, it needs more memorability, as the soundtrack fails to leave a lasting impression. While it successfully complements the visuals, it lacks those standout melodies or themes that truly stick with the audience beyond the viewing experience.

The real story is set around the time India got her Independence and some princely states had to be integrated into India. The Nizam then, Mir Osman Ali Khan (Makrand Deshpande) refuses to do so, preferring to keep Hyderabad intact and make it an Islamic state of his dreams. His militant and despotic lieutenant and general advisor, Kasim Rizvi (Raj Arjun), unleashes a frenzy of torture, brutality, murder, rape and conversions in different parts of the state against Hindus and against Marathi, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi as languages being taught—a genocide that few Indians today are even aware about.

As Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru keeps prevaricating, intoning about a treaty India has signed, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the original Iron Man of India and the Home Minister then, decides to take stringent action even as the Nizam plans to ally with Pakistan and other Islamic nations.

While the original Telugu script does not beat about the bush and shows the extreme levels of inhuman brutality shown by the militant ‘police’ (the Razakar), the Hindi lines also do complete justice to the saga of unbridled despotism out of religious fanaticism. Footage of sadism, unspeakable horrors and mayhem resorted to by the Razakar, again and again, take up most of the film’s long length while an ageing Nizam struggles to retain his royal status out of a misguided sense of power and authority.

The dialogues are chilling, and so are the situations. And the non-fanatic and righteously secular (a term not employed then!!) and nationalistic Muslims are also given the same treatment as the helpless and hapless Hindu folks by these fanatical forces.

Razakar: The Silent Genocide of Hyderabad Movie Review: Star Performance

If there is one actor who dazzles here, it is Raj Arjun, a man who played the evil stepfather in Secret Superstar with the same ease and aplomb as his portrayal of Shirdi Sai Baba in the web series we saw some years ago. As Rizvi, he comes across as so malevolent and tyrannical that this must be one of the most horrendous of the real-life villains we have seen so far in Hindi cinema. I can only salute him for his expressions, the way he rages, roars and otherwise modulates his voice. And his expressions and the manic look in his eyes in close-ups are simply out of this world.

Tej Sapru is excellent as the determined Sardar Patel in a performance that is as much subdued as it is intense. Makrand Deshpande brings to life the erring Nizam, who sees the light too late but cannot be punished for the genocide he sanctioned. The character of K.M. Munshi, popularly known by his pen name Ghanshyam Vyas, an Indian independence movement activist, politician and writer from Gujarat and the founder of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, is evocatively brought out by veteran South actor Thalaivasal Vijay.

As the film is so stark and graphic about everything, the characters are all perfect for the parts, and among them, Annusriya Tripathi as one of Mir Osman Ali Khan’s wives, Vedhika as Shanthavva and Bobby Simha as Rajireddy stand out. The issue here is that all have got limited to even less (!) footage, but they all still shine in the roles given.

Razakar: The Silent Genocide of Hyderabad Movie Review: Direction, Music

Director Yata Satyanarayana goes all out in his passionate zeal to expose (as in The Kashmir Files, The Kerala Story and Bastar: A Naxal Story) truths hidden from all or most of the nation out of vested interests. A present Censor rule is that whatever is depicted on screen must be backed by documented facts, and clearly the depiction must be authenticated. It is horrifying how the Indian powers then distorted even relatively contemporary history out of pure malicious intent.

The film is very candid in its exhibition of reality, and while the gore may put off a section of the audience (word-of-mouth is always vital for a film’s box-office standing), I must congratulate the director, who has also co-written the script, for showing things as they were.

That said, mention must be made of the needless dramatization that elongates the film, so to speak. The dance invoking the Goddess Durga and another rousing song not only slow down the pace but also seem clearly inspired by S.S. Rajamouli! One song, contextually, is very similar to the classic Kumuram Bheemodu from RRR! The background score is also an inspiration, as are the end-credits. Then there are some action sequences akin to normal films in which the lead actors take on multiple antagonists all at once! The director should have steered clear of such needless add-ons to a terrifying saga, which, unlike the fictional RRR or the Bahubali franchise, is totally real.

The music per se is alright, ditto the fitted Hindi lyrics.

Such films, sadly, in our country, are labelled as ‘propaganda’ films, even more so as the election season is on. But the truth will always be the truth, and in any case, films always work because of their resonance with the viewer.
