Viduthalai Part 2 Movie Review (Photo Credit – Instagram)

What’s Good: The acting is commendable, with almost every actor delivering strong performances. The cinematography is impressive, capturing the essence of the story beautifully. While the fight sequences lean towards realism, they are still engaging and enjoyable to watch.

What’s Bad: The screenplay feels sluggish, and the characters suffer from inadequate development.

Loo Break: The gunfight sequences between the police and Vijay Sethupathi’s organization feel drawn-out, making them a good opportunity to take a breather.

Watch or Not?: If you’re looking for a realistic, emotionally charged political drama, Viduthalai Part 2 won’t disappoint. However, it might be less appealing if that’s not your cup of tea. That said, it’s a socially relevant film that everyone should watch, much like 1984, which is a must-read. The movie challenges viewers to think critically and question whether everything the media and government present should be taken at face value.

Language: Tamil

Available On: Theatrical release

Runtime: 170 Minutes

Viduthalai Part 2 picks up where the first part left off. Before delving into the plot of Part 2, let’s recap the events of Part 1. The story begins with a shocking train derailment caused by a bomb blast. In response, a police task force was formed to capture the leader of the organization responsible for the attack, played by Vijay Sethupathi. Soori portrayed a newly recruited police officer assigned as a driver in the task force.

Soori’s life takes a turn when he falls in love with a village girl from a community accused of sheltering Vijay Sethupathi and his group. As the police unleash brutal atrocities on the villagers, Soori finds himself torn between his duty and his growing empathy for the oppressed. The film culminates in Soori successfully capturing Vijay Sethupathi.

In Viduthalai Part 2, the narrative deepens as Vijay Sethupathi and the police find themselves trapped in a dense jungle after his arrest. Here, Vijay Sethupathi’s character recounts his transformation from a simple school teacher who sought justice through legal means to the leader of an armed insurgency. Through his story, the film explores how systemic injustice and unfulfilled ideals can drive an ordinary man to extreme measures.

Viduthalai Part 2 Movie Review: Script Analysis

The script is a weak point in this film due to its poor character development. The relationship between Vijay Sethupathi and Manju Warrier is inadequately explored, failing to establish a convincing emotional connection. While Vijay Sethupathi’s journey is laden with emotional beats, it leans heavily on predictable tropes and feels underwhelming despite the lengthy runtime. The lack of well-rounded character arcs is evident throughout.

Additionally, the film doesn’t arrive at a definitive conclusion, opting for an open-ended finish instead. It is likely intended to maintain its commitment to realism. While this approach may resonate with some, it contributes to the script’s weakness.

Viduthalai Part 2 Movie Review: Star Performance

Vijay Sethupathi delivers an impressive and convincing performance in his role. Soori, once seen primarily as a comedian, continues to shine as he did in Part 1. Despite having less screen time in Part 2, he leaves a strong impression, particularly in the final sequences where his inner emotional turmoil is palpable. Manju Warrier is equally convincing, and Kishore Kumar G stands out with his impactful performance. Overall, the cast delivers solid performances, making acting one of the film’s strongest aspects.

Viduthalai Part 2 Movie Review: Direction, Music

In terms of direction, the film does feel lengthy at times, but the sequences, while drawn out, are not without purpose. Each provides context to the story, building on what has come before. The issue lies in the pacing, which occasionally feels sluggish. Cinematography, however, is a standout, beautifully capturing the landscapes—whether it’s the vastness of nature or a factory’s gritty, industrial environment. This visual strength is complemented by the director’s ability to draw out strong performances from the cast, likely due to the thoughtful guidance and clear direction given on set. Overall, the direction is solid and effectively supports the film’s narrative.

The music is equally engaging. The background score incorporates natural sounds like birds chirping, adding a unique layer to the storytelling. The score works harmoniously with the visuals, enhancing the emotional depth and atmosphere of the film.

Viduthalai Part 2 Movie Review: The Last Word

In conclusion, Viduthalai Part 2 is a highly recommended film with the potential to become a major success. It carries a strong social message, so it’s important not to expect a typical mass-action film. Just like its predecessor, this is not a high-octane action venture but rather a thought-provoking and emotionally engaging story. With strong performances, solid direction, and a unique musical score, it stands out as a compelling cinematic experience.

What’s Good: Few action sequences, Suriya’s performance as Kanguva, the background score of the title track, cinematography and costumes, and art direction.

What’s Bad: The cringe comedic sequences in the year 2024 scenes, the movie tries too hard to draw parallels between the past and the present in the climax, action scenes become borderline illogical in a few scenes, Bobby Deol is highly underutilized, What was the exact purpose of Disha Patani in the film? And Yogi Babu’s jokes desperately trying to be funny.

Loo Break: You can take one easily in the second half. It won’t be much of a loss

Watch or Not?: Suriya’s die-hard fans can go for it but otherwise, it’s a major disappointment

Language: Tamil

Available On: Theatrical release

Runtime: 154 minutes

Ever since Suriya’s Kanguva was revealed to be a reincarnation drama, there has been a fear that the movie might try too hard to keep drawing parallels between the two timelines beneath all of the larger-than-life action and background score. This proves to be true in the case of this Siva starrer fantasy action drama. On a quest to draw too many dramatic and emotionally high-octane parallels, the film falls flat, and the melodramatic touch becomes too jarring to bear.

Francis (Suriya) a streetsmart and conniving bounty hunter, starts feeling a strange connection with a young boy nicknamed Zeta, who has been a victim of some strange brain experimentation by the Russians. Francis feels strangely drawn towards the boy, and it is soon revealed that they have a divine connection through their past life. Francis was a dreadful but righteous tribal warrior and chieftain’s son Kanguva 100 years ago. He was dedicated to protecting the island of Perimachi, which was being eyed by the Roman conquerors. After a series of betrayals and a game of power play, he comes face to face with his arch nemesis Udhiran (Bobby Deol), the chieftain of the rival Arathi tribal cult. We soon get to know how Francis/Kanguva is bound by Zeta in his present life.

Kanguva Movie Review: Script Analysis

One of the major drawbacks of Kanguva lies in its shoddy screenplay and writing which cannot be rescued even with the magnanimous sets, costumes, bg score, and action sequences. The movie’s weakest link is the events happening in the present 2024 stage. The lousy comedic gags don’t land and instead appear to be cringe. The desperate attempt to evoke laughter through The Boys theme and the ‘Moye Moye’ track playing in the background looks even more bizarre. If this is not enough, the movie tries too hard to draw incessant parallels between the past and the present, especially in the climax, which appears extremely melodramatic and jarring. The core premise of love, forgiveness, and sacrifice, which is reflected in the bond of Kanguva and Puruva in the past, does not evoke the needed emotions. There is no development in the sub-plots of the Roman conquerors or the Russian experimentation in Zeta’s brain. The script has several loopholes that are marred further by this reincarnation aspect and the need to justify the same.

Kanguva Movie Review: Star Performance

Suriya is the sole guiding anchor of this one. He particularly shines as Kanguva and inculcates the needed fierceness, valor, strength, and vulnerability in his performance. At the same time, his act as Francis falls flat because of the lousy writing and the cringe comedic dialogues. Bobby Deol is still in his Abrar Haque mode from Animal. Only this time, instead of breaking into the ‘Jamal Kudu’ song with a glass on top of his head, he keeps on screaming and screeching each and every dialogue. The actor, though, tries to do justice to his character but ends up being significantly underutilized.

Yogi Babu’s comedic gags just don’t land and instead come across as unnecessary. And I’m still trying to decipher the need for Disha Patani in this movie. She is just reduced to being Francis’ toxic ex and a rival bounty hunter. It was laborious to see Disha and Suriya share an extremely awkward chemistry in a misplaced song called ‘YOLO.’ A special shoutout to the young child artist who plays Zeta/Puruva in the movie.

Kanguva Movie Review: Direction, Music

Barring a few action sequences like the one wherein Suriya’s Kanguva battles a crocodile or his introductory sequence, the film’s execution goes haywire. It heavily relies on melodramatic dialogues wherein almost everyone has the need to shout in the top decibels to be heard and felt. The music by Devi Sri Prasad hits a high note in the title track and ‘Mannipu.’ The background score is also effective in some of the action sequences, but otherwise, primarily, it becomes too loud and jarring. The costumes by Anu Vardhan, the cinematography by Vetri Palaniswamy, and the art direction by the late Milan also hit the right notes.

Kanguva Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Kanguva Movie Review: The Last Word

The Suriya starrer had a lot of potential to be a well-executed magnum opus. But the lousy writing and a haphazard reincarnation parallel plot overshadow Suriya’s star power and a massive 300 crore+ scale. Look out for a cameo which paves the way for the second part but does not spark that needed excitement. Overall, we don’t know if we are looking forward to the ‘rebirth’ of this one.

What’s Good: The gripping storyline, compelling message, performances, and mass flavor which is expected from a Rajinikanth film, Rajinikanth and Big B reuniting after 33 years, Fahadh Faasil shines again, and the catchy background score from Anirudh.

What’s Bad: Overstretched second half, and the scenes surrounding the police investigation look half-baked especially in the first half.

Loo Break: The movie is too gripping for that. Better to take one during the interval itself.

Watch or Not?: To all the Thalaiva fans, you better not miss this one.

Runtime: 163 Minutes

Athiyan (Rajinikanth) believes that cold-blooded criminals only deserve one punishment: a brutal police encounter. He strictly adheres to this, much to the annoyance and resistance of senior judge and human rights lawyer Sathyadev Pande (Amitabh Bachchan). Along with a con man-turned-police informer, Patrick (Fahadh Faasil), he solves many cases, which end with him encountering the criminals. When Sharanya (Dushara Vijayan), a dutiful teacher, is raped and murdered, Athiyan takes it upon himself to bring her justice. The ‘perpetrator’ is also captured and killed, but it is soon realized that the real culprit is someone else. Not only does Athiyan battle with his inner conscience for having killed an innocent, but he has now to find the real person behind this heinous crime.

Vettaiyan Movie Review: Script Analysis

Director and writer TJ Gananavel, along with co-writer B Kiruthika, has crafted a riveting actioner that will keep you hooked until the end. The storyline questions the morality of police encounters, showing two sides of the story. The themes of crime against women and education scams are also well-highlighted. In the middle of this, the dialogues are catchy and complement Thalaiva Rajinikanth’s star power well. The script has subtle details that are bound to generate whistles and claps. A prime example is a throwback to Rajinikanth and Tamannaah Bhatia’s track ‘Kaavaalaa’ in one of the scenes. However, the movie stretches in the second half towards the climax. Another loophole is the half-baked police investigation scenes. The plot also falls prey to some predictability in the second half, but the execution remains entertaining.

Vettaiyan Movie Review: Star Performance

Rajinikanth is at it again! Right from his entry to the dialogue delivery, the countless whistles and cheers were intact. There is never a dull moment with him on the screen. It can be safely said that he was the main guiding anchor for this one. Fahadh Faasil is another cast member who shines throughout the movie. He was entertainment personified in this one and truly one of the standouts, as always. Dushara Vijayan, Ritika Singh, Rakshan, Kishore, and Manju Warrier do full justice to their characters. However, Amitabh Bachchan and Rana Daggubati are underutilized. Even though they give the best to their characters, we somehow needed more of them. Even with their limited screentime together, it was joyous to witness the chemistry between Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan after 33 years.

Vettaiyan Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Vettaiyan Movie Review: Direction, Music

Except for some loopholes and a laborious pace in the second half, Vettaiyan keeps the entertainment factor rolling with the direction. The mass appeal does not cause any hindrance to the message of the movie. This balance is often lost in many commercial films, but not in this one. Anirudh has done it again! The background score for Rajinikanth is goosebumps galore and creates more impact than the actual songs of the movie. The cinematography by SR Kathir captures the beauty of Kanyakumari well.

Vettaiyan Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Vettaiyan Movie Review: The Last Word

Vettaiyan manages to be a treat for superstar Rajinikanth’s fans, and that mainly fulfills its purpose. A huge shoutout to Fahadh Faasil for also being a show-stealer in many of the scenes.

3.5 STAR

Uranium is retrieved by four fast friends led by Gandhi (Vijay), who are furtive (as in unknown to their respective families) comrades in SATS (Special Anti-Terrorism Squad), which we are told is a division of RAW. This is done from a speeding train in Kenya in 2008, and one of the culprits involved is a renegade intelligence officer, Rajiv Menon (Mohan), who is killed when the train explodes.

Soon, Gandhi’s wife Anu (Sneha Prasanna), who is pregnant, comes to know that he is a part of such a dangerous force, and to placate her, he takes his five-year-old son, Jivan, and his wife to Thailand and Pattaya when they have to go there on a mission.

But things go wrong there, and even as Anu delivers a daughter, Jivan is kidnapped and later found dead, his body burnt.

Shattered, Gandhi leaves active service and takes a desk job at Chennai airport. He now lives alone, and his wife Anu and daughter Jeevitha (Abhyukta Manikandan) are separated. But when his ex-boss, Naseer (Jayaram), sends him to Moscow to train officers at the Indian Embassy, it comes under attack, and among the miscreants, Gandhi discovers a young lookalike of himself. Soon, it is found that it is Jivan, his son, who is not dead. A joyous Gandhi brings him back even as Jivan warns him that there is a dangerous gang looking to kill Gandhi.

Back in Chennai, the family had a happy reunion. But trouble starts soon, as Naseer summons Gandhi for a secret meeting but is killed by a masked man in front of Gandhi’s eyes. Next up is a colleague who is murdered even as the SATS team is looking for Naseer’s missing mobile phone. Finally, Jivan’s childhood sweetheart, Srinidhi (Meenakshi Chaudhary) is murdered.  And it turns out that Rajiv Menon, who is very much alive, has planned an elaborate revenge on Gandhi and the SATS team.

The Greatest of All Time Movie Review: Script Analysis

In Maharashtra, there is a dish named Ghadaa, which includes any and every possible ingredient, such as vegetables, pulses, and even seafood. The corresponding item in Gujarat is the famous Undhiyo, a similar cocktail of multiple vegetarian ingredients.

I state this because the script of this film is just like these two dishes—it has simply everything in it! And whenever the dots cannot be connected by logic, we get illogic without hesitation.

Family sentiments, laughter, and one-liners, secrets, twists every now and then, exotic foreign locations, lavish song-and-dance numbers, science, technology, expensive VFX, impossible stunts, mammoth action, and, of course, chases (including a scene where a biker chases an underground train!) are dished out consistently and relentlessly after the initial extravaganza in a train that opens the film.

The script is thus completely cooked up and even over-boiled to serve entertainment, entertainment, and entertainment—with each of these three words underlined and in bold fonts and italics! It does not bother that it is stretching to a voluminous length as the idea is also to glorify a 50-year-old star icon, that too with a lot of de-aging used.

The Greatest of All Time Movie Review: Star Performance

Vijay obviously rocks the show—and how! The intensity of his gaze may resemble Anil Kapoor’s a wee bit, and he just plays completely to the gallery in every step (dance), mood, or stunt. There is nothing literally that he cannot do, and come, Gandhi or Jivan; he has the kind of vitality that could be just right for a post-health tonic effect advertisement. He is extraordinary when he breaks down on seeing his son’s charred remains and later when he breaks the news to his wife, who has just delivered a baby girl. But he also does manic acts well whenever Jivan is placed under various extraordinary circumstances.
Prabhu Deva is as effective as his colleague Kalyan, but I preferred Prashanth more as the staid Sunil. Ajmal Ameer, as Ajay, the fourth colleague, has nothing much to do, but Jayaram, as Naseer, is effective. Mohan, as Rajiv Menon, does what is expected of him. As Diamond Raju, Yogi Babu is his usual self.

The women are ornamental at best, disposable at worst, and have really nothing to do. Of course, most of them provide glamour and skin shows.

The Greatest of All Time Movie Review: Direction, Music

Venkat Prabhu crams in everything he has got into this fiesta of entertainment. But sadly, no song worked for me, and the background score is stereotypical, loud, and obtrusive—which is a shocker as both come from Yuvan Shankar Raja.

The Greatest of All Time Movie Review: The Last Word

This is definitely one of those critic-proof films like Jawan and Animal last year. It keeps the undemanding viewer and hardcore fan entertained, and even in its inordinate length, largely maintains a sufficient interest level to make other viewers keep hoping for something fresh to come up—until the end.

Billed as “Hindustani” or “Indian”, Veerasekaran Senapathy, 28 years ago, is still alive and kicking (in far-off Taipei) practising and teaching Varma Kalai. This Tamil traditional art combines massage, alternative medicine, traditional Yoga and martial arts. He is summoned by a group of Indian social media vigilantes who have named themselves “Barking Dogs” (who don’t bite in theory!) who are furious about the various evils happening in the state. They make the hashtag #ComeBackIndian go viral globally and he responds. Though he is located far away, the cops come to know he is coming back, and a trap is laid right at the airport. But the old man is too smart for them of course—and continues to be so at every step in the long 180-minute film.

Senapathy (“Universal Star” Kamal Haasan, of course!) recommends that each and every honest young Indian (he says on social media that people over 40 need not hark at what he says, for really unknown reasons!) start cleaning the system of the country by cleaning their own homes first of corruption and wrongdoings. Later, this almost tilts the scales against him.

Indian 2 Movie Review: Script Analysis

Writer-director S. Shankar spins a super-entertaining cocktail, 1990s fashion, of vigilantes and their thankless jobs of cleaning up society. The Barking Dogs comprise of Chithra Aravindan (Siddharth, named after his mother for a reason), Aarthi (Priya Bhavani Shankar), Thambesh (Jagan) and Harish (Rishi). While the “Barking Dogs” can just use technical razzmatazz to make people realize what and who are evil, Senapathy, when he reaches India, begins to dole out exemplary punishments to major offenders across the nation, like Krishna Mohan (Delhi Ganesh) in Chennai, Darshanbhai (Zakir Hussain) in Gujarat and Kishan Singh (Piyush Mishra) in Punjab.

Meanwhile, the four friends from the Barking Dogs group have their skeletons in the family cupboards and set about correcting their family members or getting them booked by law. In the process, their families break up, and the four are disowned. Soon, they turn against Senapathy, but he is unfazed.

In Part 1, ace cop Krishnaswamy (Nedumudi Venu) had tried his best to arrest Senapathy but failed. This time, he has retired, and his place is taken by his son Pramod (Bobby Simha with a dubbed voice—is it Prabhas?), who dreams of fulfilling his father’s ambition. The interactions between the dogged cop and Senapathy come up at intervals and are quite thrilling even if predictable in outcome. It is only in their final chase that the script completely loses its logic. But the twist of the hard bargain that Senapathy drives with Krishnaswamy for Pramod’s life makes for a nice finish.

Indian 2 Movie Review: Star Performance

Kamal Haasan proves that loads of makeup and prosthesis cannot detract from his giving a solid performance. His eyes and his excellent modulation of tone carry the day and his command over Gujarati and Punjabi is incredible. He gets good support from the smaller artistes. Those who shine include S. J. Suryah as Sarguna Pandian, Bobby Simha as Pramod and Vivek as Elango, but the best performance comes from veteran Samuthirakani as Chithra’s father.

As for the four youngsters, they are very good too, especially Siddharth as Chithra, Priya Bhavani Shankar as Aarthi and Jagan as Thambesh. Rakul Preet Singh is almost in an extended (!) blink-and-miss appearance while the major ‘baddies’ come across as comic more than villainous for reasons that have to be watched in the film.

Indian 2 Movie Review: Direction, Music

S. Shankar uses all the modern techniques like Motion Capture apart from animation, besides CGI and all else, to create a stylized world of vigilantes and vendetta, and his visuals are indeed graphic in detail. The shooting of the “Calendar song” featuring Gulshan Grover and Demi-Leigh Tebow is magnificent indeed. As far as drama is concerned, he excels, especially in the sequences following Chithra’s mother’s death. But there are many other emotional moments, too.

Anirudh Ravichander’s music is all about sound, and the melody is only occasionally catchy. But his background score is superlative.

Kamal Haasan fans will obviously go berserk over this film. But if you are one of those for whom entertainment means a classic Indian movie with action, drama and emotions, you will enjoy it too as a one-time watch with a sequel (said to have been shot simultaneously) to come.

Lal Salaam Movie Review: Noble Intentions Spoiled By Poor Execution!
Lal Salaam Movie Review (Photo Credit –Facebook)

What’s Good: The film’s commendable casting, particularly the performances of Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth.

What’s Bad: Lal Salaam fails to live up to its noble intentions due to poor execution. Its writing lacks subtlety, relying excessively on melodrama and excessive use of voice-over. Moreover, abrupt scene transitions and a delayed revealing of the central conflict disappoint and disconnect viewers.

Loo Break: Ae Pulla, a romantic song, offers an opportune time for audiences to leave and relieve themselves.

Watch or Not?: While Lal Salaam offers commendable messages about harmony and peace, its dated approach and inconsistent craftsmanship make it a middling film at best. Viewers seeking a profound exploration of societal issues may be disappointed by its superficial treatment of complex themes.

Language: Tamil

Available On: Theatrical release

Runtime: 150 minutes

User Rating:

Lal Salaam aims to delve into social drama, showcasing how personal vendettas can spark religious tensions between two communities in the fictional town of Murrabad. The narrative revolves around Thirunaavukkarasu (Vishnu Vishal) and Shamsuddin (Vikranth), whose conflict is exploited by a politician’s son-in-law for political gains. The film explores themes of religious intolerance and societal issues within a backdrop of religious harmony.

Lal Salaam Movie Review: Script Analysis

The script of Lal Salaam faces challenges in conveying its intended message effectively, leading to viewer dissatisfaction. Excessive forcefulness in dialogue and fragmented storytelling disrupt the film’s coherence while postponing the resolution of the central conflict, which confuses and disengages audiences. Abrupt transitions between scenes exacerbate this disconnection, reducing viewer emotional investment. Moreover, the reliance on melodrama to evoke emotions detracts from the overall subtlety of the narrative.

Additionally, the script’s attempt at non-linear storytelling proves ineffective, failing to justify the prolonged buildup of the central conflict. This approach undermines coherence and engagement, prompting questions about its necessity. Despite addressing important societal issues such as religious intolerance and personal vendettas, the execution lacks depth. Overall, Lal Salaam disappoints in its struggle to balance conveying its message effectively while maintaining audience engagement, resulting in a disjointed and unsatisfying narrative experience.

Lal Salaam Movie Review: Star Performance

In Lal Salaam, Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth deliver standout performances, embodying their characters with authenticity amidst the film’s limitations. Vishal skillfully portrays Thirunaavukkarasu (Thiru), capturing his vulnerability and inner conflict amidst escalating tensions, enabling viewers to empathize with his struggles despite uneven pacing. Similarly, Vikranth convincingly navigates the complexities of Shamsuddin (Samsu), portraying familial ambitions and societal pressures related to religious divisions with depth.

However, the film’s reliance on exaggerated emotions and artificiality diminishes its impact, with certain scenes feeling contrived and underdeveloped supporting characters limiting the cast’s full potential. Despite commendable acting, the film’s inconsistent direction and writing hinder the realization of Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth’s performances.

Lal Salaam Movie Review: Direction, Music

Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s direction introduces inconsistencies that disrupt the film’s overall coherence. The sudden shifts between scenes and reliance on melodrama result in a fragmented viewing experience, diminishing the narrative’s impact. Despite attempting to tackle societal complexities, the execution feels contrived at times, lacking the subtlety required for audience connection. Aishwarya’s choice to intervene as a narrator exacerbates these problems, leading to a dated and disjointed storytelling method. While certain moments evoke emotion, overall, the direction fails to maintain engagement or effectively communicate the film’s intended message.

Likewise, Rahman’s musical compositions in Lal Salaam fail to leave a lasting impression. While striving to underscore emotions, the background score often overwhelms, detracting from the narrative’s nuances. Each emotion is accompanied by music, irrespective of its organic progression, resulting in a lack of depth in the auditory experience. Despite being technically proficient, Rahman‘s compositions do not enhance the viewing or elevate key moments in the storyline. Ultimately, both the direction and music in “Lal Salaam” contribute to its deficiencies, hindering its ability to captivate audiences and deliver a compelling cinematic journey.

Lal Salaam Movie Review: The Last Word

The film disappoints by failing to fulfill its noble intentions, providing only a superficial examination of religious intolerance and societal concerns. Despite commendable performances, its subpar execution, outdated approach, and lack of coherence result in a mediocre cinematic experience. While it attempts to convey important messages, it ultimately falls short of achieving excellence in filmmaking.

What’s Good: After a long time, here comes a fun sci-film that could be enjoyed with the entire family

What’s Bad: The storyline feels cliched, and there are some unconvincing moments

Loo Break: The first couple of songs could be a good time, or else the interval is enough

Watch or Not?: It’s a good relief from too many violent and serious films, so go for it!

Language: Tamil

Available On: Theatrical release

Runtime: 2 hours and 35 minutes

There’s a baddie named Aryan (Sharad Kelkar), whose only intention is to extract deadly Nova gas from beneath the surface by using a mysterious element called Sparc. And for that, he can go to any extent and doesn’t care, even if it puts the lives of people in danger and causes harm to Mother Earth.

Extraterrestrial beings on some other planet are worried about the damage that Sparc could do and decide to save Earth to maintain a balance of the universe. For the mission, they send one of their alien beings to Earth, who meets Tamizh (Sivakarthikeyan) for a purpose.

Tamizh is a happy-go-lucky man who always cares for Mother Nature, so much so that he doesn’t even use pesticides on a farm as they harm the soil and other beings who feed on it. Destiny brings him and Tattoo (an alien from another planet) together on a mission to protect Mother Earth from evils like Aryan.

Ayalaan Movie Review: Script Analysis

The story by R Ravikumar is interesting, yet it’s cliched. The same tale of the villain’s lust for power and him facing the resistance from a never-dying hero has been chalked out so many times. But the entire alien angle and the alien’s bonding with Tamizh’s character are engaging and make the film fun to watch.

Alayaan starts slow, and there are some unwanted scenes and songs that could have been avoided. However, the film gets entertaining once it gets to the main plot.

The editing by Ruben is good, especially the transitions between scenes and the way flashback portions are done. The cinematography by Nirav Shah is just about decent.

Ayalaan Movie Review: Star Performance

Sivakarthikeyan has portrayed some interesting characters in his career, and this time, too, he didn’t fail to leave an impression. He, as Tamizh, delivers an earnest performance. His innocence and charm make his character more endearing. He even looks effortless while doing action scenes and dance moves.

Venkat Senguttuvan as Tattoo deserves all the attention for his performance. Even though the alien character has been created using motion capture and CGI, playing such roles requires more effort. Venkat nails it with his expression and adorable act. Also, special mention to Siddharth’s voice modulation, which makes the character of Tattoo more fun and lovable.

Sharad Kelkar, as Aryan, feels evil and pulls off the baddie with ease. However, we have seen him in such roles in the past, and nothing much stands out. Yogi Babu does his job aptly by delivering comic scenes at regular intervals. All the other actors are decent in their parts.

Ayalaan Movie Review
Ayalaan Movie Review Is Out! (Picture Credit: IMDb)

Ayalaan Movie Review: Direction, Music

The bonding between Tamizh and Tattoo is very well presented by R Ravikumar. There are ample of fun moments and some scenes when you’ll shed tears. There are no high points as such, but still, the film feels like a joyful ride due to its light-hearted nature.

Barring a couple of shots, the VFX work is impressive, and it doesn’t come off as artificial while watching on the big screen. The music by AR Rahman is decent, with songs Ayalaa Ayalaa and Suro Suro going well with the narration.

Ayalaan Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Ayalaan isn’t a perfect sci-fi film, but it offers you a good time with its fun and heartwarming moments. Most importantly, it’s a film with good intentions!

Three stars!

Set in the pre-Independence era, we have Analeesan, aka Issa, aka Captain Miller’s (Dhanush), who starts his tumultuous journey siding with the British because, he reasons, “Our kings might not give us slippers, but the Britishers are giving us boots.” For him, freedom is respect, and for that, he goes against his revolutionary brother (played by Shiva Rajkumar) and his mother.

On his first mission at his new job as a British soldier, he’s asked to fire at hundreds of Indians protesting against the British & that’s where it hits him. That’s where he decides to use his rechristened name, ‘Captain Miller, ‘ to destroy Britishers with the help of the revolutionaries in his village. But Captain Miller isn’t so simple; he’s twisted just like his fate & you can’t tell whether he’s with you or against you.

Captain Miller Movie Review: Script Analysis

The only question after “Katappa ne Baahubali ko kyon maara?” that needs to be asked ASAP is, “What’s with South Indian filmmakers & their lust to touch the 3-hour mark?” Yes, I totally agree that a filmmaker is a world-builder, but would you want to live in a world that takes a little too much time to get to even get to the basic things? It gets a little boring. But what a world Arun Matheswaran has built! Because he couldn’t make a film on the real-life Tamil Eelam liberation struggle stories as it would’ve been ‘too controversial,’ he decides to paint his world in which the insane bravery of a traitor turned revolutionary would be questioned.

Siddhartha Nuni’s cinematography doesn’t match the unparalleled vision Arun Matheswaran sets with his direction and screenplay (with Madhan Karky). Just like Sonchiriya, you can feel the rawness through the ultra-realistic setup of the story. Just like Kantara, the village is a character in itself that you connect with owing to the in-depth explanation of its cultural significance.

Captain Miller Movie Review: Star Performance

There are some roles that you think about & immediately can say *this xyz actor would be perfect to play this character.” & Captain Miller is one of the many for Dhanush. He performs like he was born to play Captain Miller. The pace results in a few dips in his character arc graph, but he overcomes every shortcoming by acting his heart out.

Shiva Rajkumar‘s cameo is not as good as Jailer‘s, but it has enough meat to let you marvel at it. Priyanka Arul Mohan & Nivedhithaa Sathish blaze the screen up with their presence but unfortunately don’t get any scene for which they’ll be remembered.

Captain Miller Movie Review: Direction, Music

Arun Matheswaran is slowly and gradually creating a niche for his films, which would be known for their unique presentation. After two good attempts in Rocky & Saani Kaayidham, he returns to a different world with the same vision of doing something others have not done. Yes, there’ll be a dozen films with a similar template as Captain Miller, but somehow, this feels richer & more polished visually, at least.

The above feat achieved also involves the omnipresent presence of G. V. Prakash Kumar’s heavy-on-the-beat BGM. He undoubtedly makes the best usage of a ‘damru’ in the background, leveling up the intrigue to be in those sequences. The aura of Killer Killer is magnificent, but the Hindi lyrics don’t really do any justice to it.

Captain Miller Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, the highlights of Captain Miller are Dhanush‘s electric presence coupled with the G.V. Prakash Kumar’s immersive background score & Arun Matheswaran’s vision to create a world never seen before.

Three stars!

What’s Good: The film is an authentic ‘Pandya Western’ with aesthetics, an engaging protagonist’s journey, and an enigmatic narrative core. Suryah and Lawrence deliver spectacular performances, navigating moral quandaries and evoking empathy. Karthik’s trademark layers assure sustained engagement, with nods to Tamil cinema adding an enigmatic touch.

What’s Bad: The initial 30 minutes exhibit storytelling impatience. Specific sequences, like unnecessary melodrama, disrupt the flow. CGI, especially in rendering elephants, lacks an organic feel. The second half’s abundance of messages can be overwhelming, and some scenes, like the tribal wedding, seem disconnected.

Loo Break: There is a film recording scene at the 49-minute mark. Consider taking a break, but be aware of a fight sequence after this scene. If you don’t want to miss it, return as soon as possible.

Watch or Not?: Worth watching for its unique narrative, exceptional performances, and political commentary. Despite flaws, it stands as Subbaraj’s bold and stirring creation, reaching unprecedented heights.

Karthik Subbaraj’s “Jigarthanda Double X” ventures into the realm of a political masala western, unfolding a narrative where politician Jeyakodi faces off against rival Karmegam. The story intricately weaves dual worlds, combining the streets of Madurai with the lush Kombai Sambala forests, set in 1973. The film’s brilliance lies in depicting the protagonists’ self-discovery amid unexpected twists.

Jigarthanda Double X Movie Review: Script Analysis

Karthik Subbaraj’s script for “Jigarthanda Double X” showcases his adeptness at crafting a politically charged narrative with a distinctive blend of genres. The film seamlessly integrates character arcs and a captivating political commentary, revealing the director’s nuanced storytelling style. The initial 30 minutes, while exhibiting a hint of impatience in introducing lead characters, establishes the groundwork for a dense and layered narrative. Subbaraj’s trademark layers become evident as the plot unfolds, with a fusion of humor into severe scenes and numerous nods to Tamil cinema, creating an engaging tapestry. The script delves into the dual worlds of Madurai’s streets and the Kombai Sambala forests, weaving together two divergent realms to unveil a sprawling narrative.

Infusing real-life incidents into the fictional narrative adds depth, and the symmetrical frames skillfully divide elements like a gun from a camera, contributing to the film’s palpable fusion of reality and fiction. Despite a few hiccups, such as an abrupt wedding and moments of unnecessary melodrama, the script maintains sustained engagement. The characters, particularly Kirubai and Caesar, embark on journeys of self-discovery, adding layers to the narrative. Overall, Subbaraj’s writing for “Jigarthanda Double X” stands out as a bold and ambitious endeavor, solidifying his reputation as a master storyteller.

Jigarthanda Double X Movie Review: Star Performance

“Jigarthanda Double X” boasts stellar performances, with SJ Suryah and Raghava Lawrence delivering standout portrayals that breathe life into their characters. Suryah, in the role of Ray Sir, navigates the moral quandaries of his character with finesse, portraying the complexities of witnessing two facets of the same individual. His commanding acting prowess radiates, seizing the audience’s attention and empathy. Raghava Lawrence, embodying the formidable gangster Caesar, delivers a spellbinding performance, portraying the gun-slinging, merciless character with unwavering conviction. Despite Caesar’s ruthless exterior, Lawrence manages to evoke genuine empathy for the true essence of the character, showcasing his versatility as an actor.

The fiery on-screen chemistry between Suryah and Lawrence blazes through, infusing the film with depth and propelling their performances to unforgettable heights. Naveen Chandra’s portrayal of Rathnakumar, an immoral police officer, ignites the screen with a depiction dripping in disdain, evoking genuine reactions from the audience. While the ensemble cast plays a pivotal role in the film’s success, it’s the scorching brilliance of Suryah and Lawrence that sets the screen ablaze, stealing the spotlight with performances so nuanced and captivating that “Jigarthanda Double X” becomes a blazing testament to their acting prowess.

Jigarthanda Double X Movie Review: Direction, Music

Karthik Subbaraj’s direction in “Jigarthanda Double X” is a masterful orchestration of dual worlds and complex narratives. Subbaraj seamlessly transitions between the vibrant streets of Madurai and the lush Kombai Sambala forests, creating a visual tapestry that enhances the film’s immersive quality. His ability to infuse humor into serious scenes, a trademark of his style, adds layers to the storytelling, and the numerous nods to Tamil cinema contribute to the film’s enigmatic charm. Despite an initial storytelling impatience and a few hiccups in pacing, Subbaraj’s brilliance shines through in depicting the myriad dualities of the two protagonists navigating between distinct realms.

Santhosh Narayanan’s music and background score are crucial in elevating the cinematic experience. Despite some CGI issues in rendering elements like elephants, Narayanan’s exceptional score rescues certain moments, making flaws more forgivable. Narayanan’s musical prowess heightened the impactful interval block and compelling pre-climax segments, adding emotional depth to crucial scenes. The collaboration between Subbaraj and Narayanan in “Jigarthanda Double X” showcases a synergy that enhances the film’s narrative, making it a memorable audio-visual experience.

Jigarthanda Double X Movie Review: The Last Word

Jigarthanda Double X emerges as Subbaraj’s bold and stirring creation, standing as the Double X rendition of Jigarthanda. While not without flaws, it captivates with its unique narrative, stellar performances, and political commentary, solidifying Subbaraj’s status as a master storyteller.

Lokesh Kanagaraj teams up with Master & Vikram’s writer, Rathna Kumar, adding Jil Jung Juk’s Deeraj Vaidy, which doesn’t help in any way. I had a doubt when Loki kept saying how he had just rehashed the done-to-death concept but added a proper theatrical experience to it. I don’t know why I would expect something else when he has said this multiple times & that’s what he delivers. The story is so stale that even if the film is retitled as ‘Deo,’ it would still stink.

But, there are elevation moments, as promised, enriching the theatre experience for those particular scenes. The problem is, what apart from that? Because these high moments are too little even to count, and the rest of the time, you’re like, “Vikram chala do wapas!” (Play me Vikram again!). Manoj Paramahamsa smartly tried to hide the pretty ordinary VFX through his camera tricks & Philomin Raj through his editing skills. Still, whenever there are high-quantity VFX scenes, you’ll be able to feel its substandard quality in some sequences.

Even the hollow screenplay makes you lose the connection with the characters way sooner than you’d expect it to end. A prime example of a sub-par screenplay is Vijay telling the story of a serial killer, corpses on the ground to his school-going daughter, and closing her ears only when he wants to say “bleeding”. I mean, what parameter is this?

Leo Movie Review: Star Performance

Thalapathy Vijay has been getting very comfortable in doing such roles and, hence, getting pretty monotonous at what he does. I’ll never deny the amazing star power he has, but even we thought the same for Salman Khan, and we all saw what happened when he got repetitive.

Trisha adds zero value to the story or Parthiban’s life. She fights over him getting their ‘anniversary’ shirt torn, completely ignoring that he has saved so many lives while defeating a wild Hynea. Arjun is royally wasted, and so is Sanjay Dutt; I wish we could’ve seen more of both. Sandy Master creates the desired with his lunatic serial killer. He should’ve stayed the main villain till the end.

Leo Movie Review: Direction, Music

Lokesh Kanagraj is coming out of delivering the best film of his career in Vikram and jumps on to directing the worst piece of cinema he has ever made. It does ample fan service and is written keeping in mind to only and only serve fans.

Anirudh Ravichander saves the boat! He’s the one who makes pretty average scenes a delight for years. Jumping into proper situational songs like ‘I’m Scared,’ it’s Anirudh’s BGM, because of which Vijay’s swag comes across as what it is.

Leo Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, this is the Thor: Love And Thunder of LCU. It had everything steering its way, but Lokesh took everything too casually to let everything slip.

Two and a half stars!

What’s Good: The responsible political voices that talk of the evil with a very balanced and perfect gaze. An actor who himself is a politician taking down the same system that he represents to re-establish it is the most meta thing one can see right now.

What’s Bad: The screenplay loses the grip more than once, and in the attempt to grow the canvas horizontally, it ends up diluting the efforts.

Loo Break: it’s available on digital now. Use that pause button because nothing is so questionable that you miss it.

Watch or Not?: With its flaws, Maamannan is an important film. As we consume so much propaganda, this movie has none to serve but only talk of equality and equal grounds.

Maamannan (Vadivelu), a man born to a marginalised community, is the MLA representing the Kashipuram constituency and backs a party that talks about social justice and equality. His son Adiveeran, an Adimurai teacher, also runs a pig farm as hobby. The opposition, Rathnavel (Fahadh), a man from the upper caster, doesn’t want any ‘low born’ to have a seat of power. What happens when Adiveeran forces his father break the conditioning and oppression by making him sit in front of Rathnavel is the film?

Maamannan Movie Review: Script Analysis

Mari Selvaraj (with who lot of bad press attached to him ) is a filmmaker who has been a distinct voice in the Indian cinema. His idea of telling stories about the inequalities in India has always been about showing the now world compared to a mythological tale or the past era. The attempt of showing that not much has changed even now in the places where internet is still an alien concept, and the world has moved ahead leaving them behind, is commendable. Karnan, a movie that shook us all to our cores, was one such film that spoke about a man going rogue by taking things in his hand and demanding the rights he was never cordially given.

Walking on a similar trajectory Gulzar Sahab did as a writer (Hu Tu Tu, Machhis), Mari writes his movie with young protagonists trying to bring the change rebelliously. In Maamannan though, he tries to bring the more practical turn to his main man. Yes, he fights and can take down and entire group of men who insult his father for just being born, but he is also mindful that a man-to-man fight will only solve the issue between two people, and the battle he is fighting is that of an entire community. Filmmakers evolving through their material is the most fulfilling thing to watch, and Selvaraj, after giving some of the most nuanced and thoughtful films, makes it clear that even his stories have scope for a new dawn and ideas.

Maamannan is a very thought about film. It is not busy forcing you believe in its conversation but wants to invite you on the journey to give a few people their rights. The balance is so good that it never feels biased. It is unsettling, and let’s be very clear, stories of inequality and the privilege pushing the have-nots under the bus are never easy to sit through. Because they make you look at your privileges as a person. Maamannan makes sure you feel those when 4 men stone and kill 3 young boys because they are low borns and they decided to take a dip in the temple pond. For them, these kids are a ‘danger’. Metaphors run deep, and Mari lets you absorb them. One that pitches pigs against groomed dogs is the best and becomes a recurring motif that defines the movie.

Amid all that substantial story, what Maamannan lacks is a screenplay that does justice to the base material. The first half is invested in just setting up the big fight, and it is interesting how that fight is fought through an election. But the second half becomes a dragged race that keeps on playing in loop with a repetitive structure. The script also ends up underusing Keerthy Suresh’s character and the setup around her. The kids from her coaching act as padding in scenes and not concrete plot devices.

Maamannan Movie Review: Star Performance

This is Udhayanidhi Stalin’s last film before he took a break from acting to focus on his political commitment, and he chose an apt character. A young man with rage fighting a battle through elections and weapons is exactly what a politician should be representing, and even if this is PR or a marketing strategy on his personal end, it is one of the best ideas. He gives Adiveeran his all because you can see him feeling a lot for the character and his silent journey. The actor becomes one with the part and leaves no room for complaint.

Fahadh Faasil as the egoistic upper-caste man who thinks rest everyone was born to serve him, is brilliant. How can he make us love him in one movie and hate in the next? The actor is precious and should be treasurer at all cost.

Vadivelu, who plays the titular part, still has the fire in him left that thinks of surprising his fans. For an actor who is mostly associated to comedy dramas, he plays a serious part that has no room for light and even a smile. He excels and doesn’t even once let you think of the times he made you laugh.

Keerthy Suresh does what she is expected too, but is mostly serving Adiveeran. I hope she had redemption of her own after she helped Adiveeran find his. Her storyline feels incomplete and left unattended.

Maamannan Movie Review: Direction, Music

Mari Selvaraj’s direction is both interesting and also stretched. While the way he places scenes and makes you decode their relevance and accuracy of them is a sign of a confident filmmaker. He chooses to open it with Adiveeran explaining two boys to fight for themselves and not really be a punching bag. There is so much to absorb as a person in the stories he tells. The second half is where the dragging begins and never ends until the end.

DOP Theni Eswar creates some very interesting visuals. Especially when he shifts the tone to monochrome, he makes some of the most haunting visuals, and the storyline supports. AR Rahman ensures he only elevates this movie to the best of his capabilities by not following a stereotypical route. He chooses to use fresh modern music in Maamannan. It works so well and indicates that this isn’t a story from the past, but exists in the present, where you talk about progress and equal opportunities on world stages.

Maamannan Movie Review: The Last Word

This could be the most average flick from Mari Selvaraj’s mill, but it is still a potent film that needs to be consumed for what it represents. It’s a fresh take with a weak screenplay, and you can watch it even with the flaws.

Jailer Movie Review: Script Analysis

A Rajinikanth movie is never a movie that walks standalone. It has the burden of serving to the cinema deity it stars. It has to not just be a story that impresses but also a platform that gives ample space for this larger-than-life star to walk in slow motion, throw a cigar in his mouth in reverse (he does that in Jailer), or just wear glares with the most complicated hand movements there could be. If done by anyone else, it could be eccentric, but for Rajinikanth, that is his style. Even the dried leaves and mud on the road know when to fly and form a mini storm when he walks by them.

So when writer-director Nelson Dilipkumar decides to cast one of the biggest stalwarts of Indian cinema in his crime comedy, he knows what he has signed up for. Jailer is only victorious because Nelson never feels the pressure of serving Rajni fans keeping his movie aside. He makes sure the movie happens first, and the fan service is a path of it. We meet Rajinikanth praying; he is not dressing up to now woo a young fair lady, but is a grandfather to a 6-year-old toddler. His wife taunts him, and he doesn’t dare to give a comeback. I could see the excitement of the fans fading in a houseful theatre when their superstar did not enter the screen punching some goons, or smoking a cigar. But Nelson takes this risk.

He takes the risk to make the biggest superstar of the country accept his age right in the beginning of his movie. Yes, a flashback where he is young serves as a redemption and the crowd even cheered more on that, but you see how the filmmaker is cleverly serving his sensibilities, the audience, fans, and producers. Jailer, for the most part of it, never shows you the action visually. It is always an idea. Rajinikanth has done enough for you to form an image of him breaking some bones when he enters a room and closes the door. So Nelson cuts to the chase and shows the end result. Now, this could not work for the fans who bought that ticket to watch the star beat hundreds of people in a go, but it is a great idea and must be appreciated.

Nelson, while writing multiple cameos, lives his fanboy dream. Superstars enter the frame one after the other and none demand the limelight of the other, because they are now that content with their share. You can see that in the little moments. Nelson even goes meta when he critiques his own industry when he talks about aged heroes running behind young actors with their wigs on.

Jailer loses the momentum though, post the interval. The second half begins on a high but soon gets too predictable and a big twists feels unnecessary entirely. That twist also leads to the climax becoming the biggest bothering bit about this movie. The writing also forgets the little boy and entirely ignores the women. None of the two ladies get to have a decent conversation. And one of the two is played by Ramya Krishnan, FYI.

Jailer Movie Review: Star Performance

Rajinikanth can now cakewalk through the slow motions and antique ways of wearing glasses, folding legs, sitting, walking; the man even has a style to light a matchstick. But the task for him is to underplay the Rajni Phenomenon, and you see him do that in Jailer. It is fun to see him accept his age in a much more nuanced manner.

Vinayakan, as the big baddie Varma, is a fun character. All the comedy and fear comes out of him, and is written quite nicely. He makes his goons dance to Rahman songs in an Anirudh musical. His hideout is as dramatic as possible. The actor makes sure he doesn’t become a comic relief, and the way he balances the two things is commendable.

Vasanth Ravi is impressive. Yogi Babu can never go wrong, and then when joined by Jackie Shroff, there is enough to hook you here.

Jailer Movie Review ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Jailer Movie Review: Direction, Music

Nelson has definitely taken a huge risk in Jailer to change the blueprint of how a Rajinikanth movie should look. Not many can dare to break a mold that was so successful for a very long time. But we recently saw a saturation in that too and looks like even Nelson did. This is the superstar’s best work in a long while.

Anirudh is here to revolutionize music and needs to spread his art across the country and, eventually the world. His work in Jailer is so fresh and works so well with the setup. He makes the film sound so larger than life and also grounded when needed. As for songs, Kaavaalaa works pretty well in the movie. The placement of the song could be one of the best in a long time. DOP Vijay Kartik Kannan’s camera worships Rajinikanth in a good way. The wife angle shots are brilliant, and so is the set design in most of the parts.

Jailer Movie Review: The Last Word

Jailer is the best Rajinikanth movie in a very long time. Yes, there was also Darbar, and we know what happened. Though Jailer has flaws too, but none that should make you skip it. Go in if you want to see a fresh take on the Rajni Phenomenon.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 Movie Review: Script Analysis

We have to agree with the fact that the fuel to Mani Ratnam’s cinema is the unrequited love and the abundance of it. The filmmaker knows how to make people fall in love and then drag them out of it while making his audience a part of a destructive love story. For someone who didn’t like Ponniyin Selvan 1, Part 2 came in as a massive shift and a beautiful surprise, mostly because Ratnam has a love saga to tell here at the helm of a story about a reigning house.

Adapted by Mani Ratnam, Jayamohan, and Kumaravel from Kalki’s iconic work, Ponniyin Selvan 2 finally manages to find its soul and a hook to put the multiple threads it intimated in the first part. While I still believe the first left too much for the second, it is in Ratnam’s mastery that he made it all work. PS 2 exists in its moments more than the grandeur that is designed by the creators so skilfully. Yes, the fight is for the throne, but that never makes an impactful entry to the movie visually. But that does work well, too, because all the key moments are created away from the treasures and the thrones, leaving a long-lasting impact.

PS 2 works as a redemption for at least the key characters in more ways than one. Mani Ratnam is in no haste at the beginning to take you where he left with the first part. He rather invests the opening 10 minutes or so in telling you the love story that was introduced in bits and pieces. Aditha and Nandini’s saga becomes the centre conflict and is so poignant. A fierce prince in love with an orphan who is ousted because she has no house to be eligible for becoming a queen. That makes her fantasise power and work towards it, only to meet the lover in the most traumatic turn of life.

Ratnam’s magic unfolds right here when he weaves the entire widespread narrative around this plot. While he does move the other parallel storylines, but he always kind of creates a void purposely so a viewer’s mind would keep wanting to come back to it. The first half is spent busting the evil plans and letting the love between its multiple characters bloom.

The problem begins beyond the interval where Ratnam picks up pace, and doesn’t let us breathe in the heavy moments. It doesn’t let us process some of the most pivotal twists one of which even involves the mysterious aged Aishwarya, introduced at the end of part 1. Her mystery is revealed only to snatch bet away in one scene, making it all look like a waste of opportunity. Similarly, multiple characters do not get their deserving redemption.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 Movie Review: Star Performance

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has to be one of the most underrated actors. Her demand in the circle of period cinema somewhere made people think that the grandeur compensates for her but that was never the case. As an actor, she brings so much to the table, and Ponniyin Selvan 2 lets her go wild with Nandini. She commands your attention and doesn’t let you move even a bit in her presence. There is so much mystic beauty even when she walks into Ravi Varman’s camera that it makes the frame even more beautiful.

Vikram is a performer who knows his job well. Adding Aditha to his characters that go wild after a point and let it leak into their behaviour, he adds a lot more than what you see on the screen. There is so much to learn from the way he approaches the part that is the King In Line, but he manages to make him human first.

Ponniyin Selvan cannot be mentioned without talking about Karthi and his acting range, that makes him the most prominent cast members. His casting must have been the toughest bait because he is the voice of the viewer in here. Karthi knows humour, he is good at action, and can make you root for him.

Jayam Ravi, as Arunmozhi, is likable and also very charming. Trisha shows her vulnerable side this time, and she is brilliant. Wish Sobhita Dhulipala and Aishwarya Lekshmi deserves much more screentime. Dhulipala shows so much potential in the little she gets, some more complex scenes would have done wonders for her.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 Movie Review
Ponniyin Selvan 2 Movie Review ( Photo Credit – A Still From Ponniyin Selvan 2 )

Ponniyin Selvan 2 Movie Review: Direction, Music

Mani Ratnam as the director in PS 2, is in his glory. The filmmaker creates a visual spectacle expected from him and worships his story more than anything. Be it the moment where the three Chola siblings finally meet after investing two movies in saving them, or the final moments between Nandini and Aditha, or Vallavaraiyan’s helplessness; he captures all of it with ‘theraav’.

With DOP Ravi Varman, Ratnam’s longtime collaborator, he creates visuals which are stunning and detailed. Top angle shots of two people talking, or Aishwarya Rai Bachchan simply breathing. They all look ethereal. How does Mani Ratnam managed capture Aishwarya in such a godly manner should be a case study. The set design and costumes are worth every minute.

The only place where Ponniyin Selvan 2 flickers visually are the war sequences. Two reasons lead to the bothering aspect. First being the haste in which they appear in the story and second, that very flat execution.

AR Rahman and his music evolve 10 folds from one, and there is so much nuance that his music adds in every single frame. Gulzar Sahab only accentuates this set up with his words.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 Movie Review: The Last Word

Ponniyin Selvan 2 works like a brilliant compensation for sitting through a scattered part 1. There is so much to grasp here and a Ratnam brand lethal love saga in the centre of it all LLP. You must invest in this one.

The story spans over a few days before the independence in which Param (Gautham Karthik), Robert’s footsoldier but an ‘Indian’ at heart, decided to unite the villagers against the Britishers for his selfish reasons. At a place where men bury their daughters alive only to avoid them getting r*ped by British rulers, workers aren’t allowed to drink water or pee during working hours, even a day’s delay in conveying the news of Independence might end up in destroying many lives.

N.S. Ponkumar manages the script, screenplay & direction of the film, making sure to ruin every department equally. The whole movie seems to be designed after a one-liner development of “A village unaware of Independence because of its brutal British rulers.” To all my aspiring writers, read the one-liner and think of the worst probable story you can get around it; it’d still be better than it’s shown here.

A scenario reenactment of what NS Ponkumar was asked to do:

Makers: How much drama will you add to dramatise the situation of the film?

NS Ponkumar: Yes.

The brutality shown to dramatise the situation doesn’t connect even once because of the sheer lack of building anything around it. So, even when an underage girl gets caught (and almost groped) for working in disguise as a boy, you won’t feel a thing because of the lacklustre skills at world-building.

August 16 1947 Movie Review: Star Performance

Gautham Karthik, who looked like a love child of Kichcha Sudeep and Allu Arjun to me, despite getting the meatiest role, emerged as underwhelming due to the film’s writing. There’s no single scene where he can optimally showcase his acting skills.

Revathy plays the female lead without any voice of her own. She gets into the dumb skin of her character profusely well but doesn’t really get any chance to shine bright.

Richard Ashton, as the big brutal Brit hams more than Rakhi Sawant, is hamming nowadays on Instagram. He’s so loud and over the top that he crosses all the lines which could’ve restrained him from being a caricature. Jason Sha remains subtle & wicked at the same time, holding the skills to annoy you with his mere presence.

August 16 1947 Movie Review: Direction, Music

NS Ponkumar’s debut film turns out to be a good idea executed poorly. He almost got the gist right but failed to create something intriguing. He’ll need to brush up on his writing skills first before working on the routine direction.

Sean Roldan’s background score is so loud that it overpowers the inane melodrama happening on-screen. None of the songs helps in overcoming the chaos happening otherwise.

August 16 1947 Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, it had an emotional subject in hand, but still, what’s lacking from the film are emotions.

One star!

What’s Good: It is Vetrimaaran setting up a foundation for a much larger story that is about a man losing his innocence and a cultist making his point in the most brutal way.

What’s Bad: While this is a visually brutal movie, it isn’t so brutal in its ideology like the filmmaker’s last movies.

Loo Break: It is an uncomfortable watch which will make you look away from the screen at least once.

Watch or Not?: You must because not many brave filmmakers still have their ideology safeguarded like Vetrimaaran. A mind we must promote and protect.

Viduthalai Part-1 Movie Review: Script Analysis

Vetrimaaran, with time, has become the voice of the have-nots whom the woke culture and progress both have to reach. He is a mirror that shows the exact reflection of their condition and how brutal an existence they are living. The filmmaker weaves his stories in a way that they are niche in nature but global in approach. Viduthalai, for the beginners is probably the least ideologically brutal movie to come out of his mind, but visually the brutality multiplies and for a reason.

Written by Vetrimaaran and adapted from Jayamohan’s novel Thunaivan, Viduthalai is a movie that is used as a run-up to the central conflict and nothing else. A 10-minute long shot without a single cut, in the beginning, speaks at length about the immersive experience the filmmaker wants to welcome you in. A train filled at total capacity with passengers is bombed, and there is death all around. The camera skilfully walks through the entire scene defying geography, through windows, uncomfortable openings in the fallen train, and past dead bodies and amputated body parts. He doesn’t want you to be a viewer but a participant.

It is about a police officer filling up for a dead officer in a region known for the unrest it is in. Technically Kumaresan always thought of the force as righteous and the one that is always at the service of people. Little did he know the brutality of the business. There is so much nuance in how Vetrimaaran creates Kumaresan visually. He is informally ousted from the troop because he follows the book and has a heart. He was told to guard a watch tower and later connected to a skill set that he must have developed while being on the tower. Slowly he is made to lose his faith and innocence but becomes brutal to fight for his rights.

So is the man who he is fighting against. Perumal, a boss of a separatist group, fights for the people. At some point in his life he was also like Kumaresan, because the screenplay does hint at his generous heart. So technically here are two individuals of the same emotion fight against each other. Between this is the class divide, the caste divide, police brutality, the haves eating off the have nots, and the forest that is very much a character.

The only thing that Viduthalai lacks in is building Kumaresan’s world inside the police workshop. He is never shown forming a bond with the fellow officers giving a gateway into some more lives.

Viduthalai Part-1 Movie Review: Star Performance

Soori, as Kumaresan, is a sheer force. The actor is our eyes in this world and is learning it as we are. He is empathetic, loveable, but these are not the only qualities which will help him survive. There is so much layering to him as he even shows hint of saviour complex. The movie explores this character in the most immersive way possible.

Bhavani Sre, a girl from the village, is an effortless performer. She becomes the voice of the women who have faced brutality at the hands of the system. When the brutality gets visual and the fact that Sre is at the recieving end, it hurts you, because the actor has managed to impress you so much. Gautham Vasudev Menon is his perfect self.

Vijay Sethupathi doesn’t have much to do than some very brief appearances this time, but the last scene where he confronts a corrupt cop is an testimony of what is about to come.

( Photo Credit – Still from Viduthalai Part 1 )

Viduthalai Part-1 Movie Review: Direction, Music

Vetrimaaran is himself experimenting with Viduthalai. The filmmaker has reshaped his own grammar and tried to expand the universe. He treats the Part 1 as just an introduction to what is to come, and that works well till and extent. But the lack of Sethupathi in the first part might not be welcomed so well by an audience who will buy that ticked for him.
While there is enough brutality on screen where nails of a man are being chipped during an interrogation. Women are stripped naked and physically assaulted. But all of this is visual, the idea never gets that brutal. It does bother a bit, because the impact gets diluted by the intercutting of the scenes.

The cinematography by Velraj is beautiful and haunting. The frames are perfectly lit and they have a story to tell. The music by the Maestro Illaiyaraaja, like all other Vetrimaaran products, is on point.

Viduthalai Part-1 Movie Review: The Last Word

Viduthalai Part 1 is Vetrimaaran experimenting and trying to make his audience live a very haunting story. Go in with a strong heart because this watch needs one.

Vaathi Movie Review: Script Analysis

Vaathi might be the most trending word in the nation’s Tamil vocabulary for the past year. Thanks to Thalapathy Vijay’s Master and the widely popular song. With Dhanush coming to the big screens with a film with the same word, it was surely an intriguing factor. Unlike how the project is being promoted, the movie is otherwise. It is simple, the story is relatable and there is too much of emotions riding on it. But does the film stand true to what it promises?

Written by Venky Atluri, Vaathi is a film that at large wants to take down the privatisation of the education system. The film wants to educate people about the importance of education, and make them believe that only academics can make people think better and away from the orthodox system that we are conditioned to live in. The writing manages to address it all as the story progresses. One must appreciate the fact that how Venky makes sure that all the weight doesn’t overburden his product. The filmmakers manages to pay an homage to the craze of the star he has in his movie and also make him do what he intends to.

The filmmaker skillfully writes his story as the simplest blueprint. While setting most of it in the flashback, he doesn’t risk jumping timelines often. He stays in the past for a very big chunk without coming back to the present at all. This kind of levels the film. There is a message, serious conversation, and some brutal truth coming right at you. But at no point, the film turns preachy or stop entertaining. Atluri adds enough of Dhanush USP panache to his recipe and time and again gives the actor sequences that fans crave. He balances out the seriousness and drama of the subject pretty well.

But one cannot ignore the fact that writing while focusing on the past, forgets the present completely. The story that the writer sets out to tell about the present and how a boy is not that great at studies stumbles upon a box of footages from the past. The film completely forgets to address this and gives him a conclusion.

Vaathi Movie Review: Star Performance

Dhanush can do no wrong. The actor with his little frame beams maximum power in a movie that has all the actors larger in frame than him. There is comfort in how he embraces all his characters. Bala Murugan is a boy who ends up being a pawn to the powerful but he chooses to shine separately. The actor manages to make you feel the pain that he goes through and his struggle he does to give the children access to education.

Samyuktha Menon gets to play a stereotypical part that is always in service of the leading man Bala. She has no life beyond being around Dhanush’s character. All the actors who play students do a very fine job in their respective parts and make the movie a very good experience.

Vaathi Movie Review
Vaathi Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – A Still From Vaathi )

Vaathi Movie Review: Direction, Music

Venky Atluri in his direction quite cleverly understands that he has to make his movie around Dhanush in a way that his message is conveyed and the audience is entertained too. But the filmmaker has some explaining to do. How is Bala teaching Maths, Physics, and Chemistry single-handedly? In a scene when there are no students attending the classes, Dhanush sits besides buffaloes and reads out from the books to them. Why does this school have buffaloes?

The music is quite good but is limited to the movie and doesn’t have a bigger recall value. Camera work by Dinesh Krishnan and J Yuvaraj is pretty interesting. While the colour tone bothers me a bit, they use it well.

Vaathi Movie Review: The Last Word

Vaathi is a simple film that does its job well and entertains too. Give this one a chance.

Post a hurried & abrupt explanation as to why a Bank named ‘Your Bank’ has to be looted for 500 crores by a group of professional gangsters. They face the ‘Dark Devil’ inside the bank who’s also there to loot the bank but for 2,000 crores (because he’s Thala Ajith & the lead actor won’t loot the same amount as petty sidekicks).

Darkdevil puppets the gangsters to his tunes & is one step ahead of the police force outside the bank as well. How the second half remodels itself into a ‘social message’ film from being a broody dark-humour heist thriller is where the rest of the story unfolds.

( Photo Credit – Still from Thunivu )

Thunivu Movie Review: Script Analysis

H. Vinoth’s story had such a strong potential to be a crackling one throughout but suffers from the second-half syndrome of letting a tight pace go all haywire. Things just happen for the sake of giving closure to the already-dragged narrative. The story is exactly like The Office‘s iconic dialogue: “Sometimes start a sentence, and don’t even know where it’s going. just hope find it along the way.”

Nirav Shah’s cinematography captures the ‘fan-service’ portions of the film with style but doesn’t really do much apart from that keeping things extremely basic. The action, on which the entire film capitalised, isn’t as great as one would hope for. The slo-mo sequences are too slow to even talk about most of them.

Thunivu Movie Review: Star Performance

Similar to Pongal 2023’s other release, Varisu, even Thunivu falls victim to the same complaint of relying too much on your lead i.e. Ajith Kumar in this case. We totally understand fans are going to see their favourite star on the big screen, but they want more than that. Thala Ajith roaring like a tiger & even moonwalking like Michael Jackson would’ve been accepted if the story around it would’ve been written stronger.

Manju Warrier restricts herself to playing the mysterious role of female presence in Ajith’s Darkdevil’s life. Unfortunately, she couldn’t rise more than that despite having all the scope of her character being written with a spin-off twist. Bagavathi Perumal as Anthony brings in a few laughs here and there, along with Mohanan Sundaram who plays the role of a journalist Mai Pa.

( Photo Credit – Still from Thunivu )

Thunivu Movie Review: Direction, Music

As a filmmaker, if you’re on a course to make a bank-heist film, you will take a good portion in the first half to explain the ‘WHY?’ part of the planned robbery. But, H Vinoth decides to take the entire film by injecting little pieces of information about why the heist was actually planned. His attempt at genre-jumping from first half to the second half doesn’t really give any fruitful returns.

Ghibran’s music fails to match the level of swag enamored by Thala Ajith. Apart from asking “Who’s da gangsta?” in a track, Thala doesn’t get a single tune to link his character with.

Thunivu Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, despite Thala Ajith’s a little exaggerated and gutsy performance, makers fail to cash in on the proper story by falling into their own cliched tropes of ‘masala’ cinem a.

Two and a half stars!

Similarly, Vijay rejects his father’s luxurious empire but, after 7 years is called back by his mother to attend a family function.

There he gets to know about how crumbled his family has been without him, and he decides to stay back helping his father to win back his lost sons. Oh, also, cross-checking another cliched family drama trope is the father has to have some life-threatening disease. How else do you think everyone else will realize what family is? Only after the one who started it dies trying to make you realise the same. It’s all about bringing every family member together and staying happily ever after (without papa!).

Varisu Movie Review: Script Analysis

Letting the story stand tall on the heroic presence of Vijay, script-writers somehow tend to forget to make things intriguing & take shortcuts like relying solely on the lead actor charming his way in. After a point of time, even Salman Khan failed to achieve the same in Bollywood and it seems Vijay has taken the same route. Vamshi Paidipally, Hari, Ashishor Solomon’s story is a poorly rehashed and mashed-up version of every 90s family drama ever.

To enrapture the viewers with this castle of a house, Karthik Palani’s camerawork overcompensates at places with too many angles jerking the scenes. The cinematography is decent otherwise, especially capturing the hand combat sequences’ brilliant action choreography by Dhilip Subbarayan. Praveen K. L’s editing does no help in keeping the pace at a desired speed for such a dragging & predictable story.

Varisu Movie Review: Star Performance

Vijay does what he does best but yet again in a film whose story isn’t qualified enough to handle his ‘mass’. The problem isn’t him being the best thing about the film, but the actual problem is he’s the only good thing about the film. His dance, his actions, and his antiques are all perfectly fine but they don’t find the right ‘home’ in this family drama.

Rashmika Mandanna continues to sign the flower pot actress roles & this ain’t much different. Staying in the story without creating any impact on it apart from looking good and dancing well, is something actresses should really refrain from doing. It’s 2023! To be fair to all, every other actor in the cast apart from Vijay is a flower pot actor in this film.

R. Sarathkumar as Vijay’s father doesn’t get much to do to build the emotions in the father-son bond, and the same goes for Jayasudha playing his mother. Vijay, in a scene, mimics Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic index finger waving pose from K3G but that worked purely because of Karan Johar’s rightly dramatic direction.

Prakash Raj as a villain is of no use, not a single scene of him will make you feel terrified for Vijay. Shaam & Srikanth as Vijay’s brothers are just to form a toxic family, both don’t really invoke any ‘bhaichara’ emotions to intrigue the viewers. Yogi Babu continues to be the routine cliched comic relief he has been in such Tamil films.

Varisu Movie Review!
Varisu Movie Review! ( Photo Credit – A Still From Varisu )

Varisu Movie Review: Direction, Music

Vamshi Paidipally had everything at his disposal, a bankable star, a decent cast, money-making genre but the only thing he missed churning out was a justifiable story. I had a similar issue with Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo as well but that one still had a good music album.

Thaman S has composed the album for this one with only Jimikki Ponnu being the bearable track because of Vijay’s performance & the music. Even the songs get monotonous coming across like they were the only options to the makers for keeping the viewers somewhat interested in the film.

Varisu Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, the major issue about Vijay’s family drama is it misses two important things: interesting family and impactful drama. Beast, despite all its flaws, was a superior project to this one.

Two stars!

Connect Movie Review: Script Analysis

Going forward as we live in the post-pandemic world with its effect still feeling strong (God this feels like talking about the Thanos Blip), it is going to be an interesting thing to see how filmmakers see it and how they weave stories around it while reflecting on the time we as a collective went through. Few weeks ago Madhur Bhandarkar released his take with India Lockdown, an unfiltered yet confused take on the phase. Now comes in Connect, a whole new idea and one that has a lot of mettle.

Written by Ramkumar Kaavya and Ashwin Saravanan, Connect is a story so fresh that you can relate to it because most of us have been imprisoned in our own houses in the past two years. Now, what if one of the members was possessed by a spirit and there is no way you can get out of the house? There is a whole lot of substance and power in this idea which the two even partially explore.

The biggest hurdle is to create a perspective. Who exactly is watching this unfold in a house with two participants? So the makers take the Searching or C U Soon route where the majority of the movie takes place through Zoom calls. So the person on the other side of the call is your window into the world. The movie is technically very sound. It uses every possible thing about the Zoom ecosystem to create intrigue. Be it the recording, the buffers that the network creates, or even the noise that it quickly catches. One can see the efforts.

Talking about the haunting part of it might take away the fun. But one cannot ignore how predictable it becomes when it solely gets into that space. This draws your attention to the lack of emotions. For a story about a parent about to lose their child has no emphasis on it or doesn’t let that angle breathe at all. Rather there is a melodramatic scene that lands nowhere followed by an exorcism attempt that we have seen in multiple films. Even the world-building beyond the conflict is weak because it appears like done to just fill a void and give the characters an identity.

Connect Movie Review: Star Performance

Nayanthara is very invested in telling this story and the fact that she is craving some new experiences is evident with the fact that this is much different than her latest outings. The actor tries her level best to make this character work but the aforementioned emotional draught affects her arc too.

Haniya Nafisa plays the possessed daughter is amazing for a debutant. She manages to irk you and even scare you a bit with her few out of the blue. Sathya Raj adds a whole lot of melodrama to the film which does feel like a misfit at points.

Anupam Kher’s performance though is the weakest of the lot. It feels like he was hired the same day he shot because he is literally reading everything out of a paper kept behind the camera. At least it looks like that. He never becomes the character.

Connect Movie Review: Direction, Music

Ashwin Saravanan does walk into this one with a very ambitious vision and one can see it through how he envisions and plots the entire narrative. But only the main conflict will never land well if the world is not built as a whole and with the same conviction.

DOP Manikantan Krishnamachary does have a tough job in hand and he does it well to an extent that idea of watching the film through screens lands well. The background score is apt and good.

Connect Movie Review: The Last Word

Connect is a great idea that deserved much more than just good technique.

Naane Varuvean Movie Review: Script Analysis

While the Indian cinema as a whole has managed to try and turn out successful in all the genres of filmmaking, one that highly remains unexplored and misunderstood leading to mediocre or bad products is horror. To compensate for the void that the stories grown here consist, we add another sub genre to make it a busy affair. Dhanush now not only leads a horror-thriller but also writes one and well we are still far from the goal it seems.

Story by Dhanush & screenplay by K. Selvaraghavan, Naane Varuvean is a film that is so busy being something that it ends up being nothing. On the scripting level, it is a story of a pair of twins who are separated and are united in some unforeseen circumstances but if 90 minutes of the 118 are spent only building up the story how am I supposed to invest in the sorting of it all? Let’s dissect.

The blueprint of the movie is about exploring the mystery through flashbacks. The opening of the film itself is a tail that connects us to the twin, one of whom is saved by a hunter and is kind of influenced. Cut to the present where a father is nurturing his family. Now the premise of the movie is so small that it begins and ends at Dhanush, with no time for another character to breathe. This ends up making everyone look like one-liners of a people with no layers at all.

There is never consistency in what exactly the film wants to do. Does it want to take the Bhool Bhulaiyaa 1 way with a psychologist involved, or the out-and-out ghost of the world where the protagonists always take the wrong decisions? It ends up being a two-hour flick with no motive and the motive that is served in the last 20 minutes 5 which is reserved for the credit roll, is highly underwhelming.

Naane Varuvean Movie Review: Star Performance

In this world of paper-thin characters, Dhanush who is also responsible for the story tries to make ultimate sense of the material that is also kind of pushed by him. Even in the weakest of the plots, it is his acting capabilities as the bad brother that shine. There is a song sequence where he keeps his family as hostage and it is a Dhanush show. But everything else is as banal as it can be.

Everyone else is a one tone character with no substance.

Naane Varuvean Movie Review: Direction, Music

K Selvaraghavan in his filmmaking makes some pretty weird choices. How can both the brothers in a pair of twins age differently? Or where exactly is the snooty brother living? People talk in Marathi there, while he speaks in Tamil, there is a dark forest, and by night there is snowfall, but once the sun is up there is no trace of any snow. Even the dry grass isn’t damp forget wet. In the need to insert spooky elements the direction leaves behind logic.

Also, art department, if your idea of a phycologist’s clinic is that of a very gory room with no light and vibe like that of an old haunted house, it is you who need therapy first. Why would a profession about bringing light in the life of people will mental illness sit in a foundation that will end up giving more depression?

The music has some saving grace, but there is nothing that can be saved here.

Naane Varuvean Movie Review: The Last Word

Naane Varuvean is a weird film that can be labelled as a lazy product with no substance, it just exists and that’s the only achievement it can manage to touch.
