What’s Good: It’s an attempt to bring a tale of valor to the big screen, giving an idea about the greatness of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj

What’s Bad: While the attempt is good, the execution seems half-baked!

Loo Break: The movie is not too long, yet you will need a couple of loo breaks, including the one in the interval

Watch or Not?: You can afford to miss it!

Director Digpal Lanjekar deserves all the praise for his dedication to showing the tales of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, and the Maratha Army, one after another, on the big screen. This one is about the fearless Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and his mind games, which led to a successful loot of Burhanpur’s treasury by the Maratha army.

The film starts with Sambhaji Maharaj’s coronation ceremony at Raigad. After the death of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Aurangzeb, and other evil emperors among Mughals thought that the state of Swarajya (self-governance) led by Shivaji Maharaj would be destroyed, but little did they know that already a new force had risen to protect it, in the form Sambhaji Maharaj. After his coronation takes place, he decides to attack Aurangzeb’s one of the dearest territories, Burhanpur, and loot all the treasury. What happens next? How the plan was executed? This film answers it all!

Shivrayancha Chhava Movie Review: Script Analysis

We have seen different historical tales presented by Digpal Lanjekar. Some of them turned out to be really good, and a few of them have been below far. Unfortunately, this one falls into the second category. Yes, despite having a solid tale of the Burhanpur attack in the hands, the script has failed to give it complete justice.

The film takes its own time to settle and gives us too many characters to remember. Sadly, barring a few, all other characters are poorly written and don’t add much to the narrative. At several points, it feels that the film is going off track, and songs make the matter worse by disturbing the pace. Overall, I can say that Shivrayancha Chhava gets interesting in bits and pieces but loses the grip more often. It really feels sad because we have already seen how entertaining and engaging Pawankhind was, and this one is not even close to that.

Speaking about the cinematography, it’s decent but nothing extraordinary. A couple of shots are well-captured, though, including the one where the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was introduced during the coronation ceremony. Coming to the VFX department, the work that has been pulled off is not good. The clash between Sambhaji Maharaj and a Tiger is a big letdown as the Tiger in that particular scene looks completely fake, and it’s easily noticeable.

Shivrayancha Chhava Movie Review: Star Performance

I had mixed feelings about Bhushan Patil. In some scenes, he looks very promising, and his screen presence fits the bill for the larger-than-life persona of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. In other scenes, he goes overboard and crosses the line by displaying cinematic heroism rather than maintaining a subtle approach for his powerful character. However, Bhushan’s voice modulation is good, and it goes well with the character.

Prasanna Ketkar, as Sarsenapati Hambirrao, does his job well and looks natural in his role. Ravi Kale is a veteran actor, and we have seen him pulling off any kind of role with ease. As Bahirji Naik, he shines and adds entertainment value whenever he’s on the screen. It’s good to see Rahul Dev after a long time. As Kakar Khan, he comes off as calm yet evil. Abhijeet Shwetachandra, as Yesaji, also leaves an impression as a powerful head of the Maratha army.

Shivrayancha Chhava Movie Review: Direction, Music

In the past, Digpal Lanjekar has presented us a work like Pawankhind and has raised the bar high for himself. Within a tight budget, he pulled off an entertaining and inspiring tale based on the battle of Pawankhind. However, here, his attempt comes off as half-baked. I am not against the elevation scenes in historical films, but at least they need to leave a strong impact on the audience. Here, it looks very forced and unnecessary.

If compared with Lanjekar’s best work, Pawankhind, Shivrayancha Chhava lacks depth and emotions. No matter how brutal it sounds, the film feels like a yawnfest at times. Also, the flashback portions that have been used fail to evoke any excitement or generate any interest.

The music of the film isn’t that good, but if I had to select one better track from all, Sinhasani Basle Shambhu Raje (sung by Kailash Kher) is decent. Background score plays an important role in taking any historical film a step higher, but here, there’s no such impact.

Shivrayancha Chhava Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Shivrayancha Chhava fails to come out as an exciting and entertaining outcome despite a solid subject in the hands. A crisp screenplay, more emotional depth, and the addition of entertaining elements could have made it a good film.

2 Stars!

What’s Good: It is an entirely varied gang of great actors coming together to retell a story of the most revered King and his friend and Commander In Chief. Alka Kubal makes a cameo, so now you know the gang I am talking about. Also, the music!

What’s Bad: It does get a bit too loud in parts and also very abrupt in its structure in parts. Also, the war choreography feels off.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is under stress to reclaim the lost provinces and build Swarajya, where everyone flourishes equally. He meets Tanaji Malusare, who is ready to fight for his king and the motherland. Years prove that Tanaji is the Lion that this country deserved and a loyal friend who stood by the King like a pillar. He finally goes to war to reclaim Kondana and even wins, but…

Subhedar Movie Review: Script Analysis

For every Maharashtrian individual and one who has had a keen interest in history, the stories of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his bravery are a part of our growing up. We build miniatures of his forts to celebrate Diwali; his birth anniversary is a day to remember his teachings, and this particular story was a part of our fourth standard curriculum. So when a filmmaker decides to build an entire universe out of his stories, there is indeed excitement. But can there be a saturation due to the repetitive occurrence? Can’t deny it. Let’s dissect.

Subhedar, tells us the story of Tanaji Malusare and how he fought the till the last breath of his life to win Fort Kondana. While this is a story of bravery and the victory of the Marathas, for me, if has always been about one of the most iconic tales of friendships and bonds. Subhedar, written by Digpal Lanjekar, captures that and manages to show that bond in the most beautiful light. The first important scene of the movie has Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj accepting Tanaji not just as his soldier but also a friend, and the bond only strengthens.

Nothing about this story is unknown to us. Ajay Devgn made a hit movie with Om Raut (Adipurush) on the same story. So, the job that Subhedar has is to make us marvel at its scale of it. Because there is no suspense. You know Tanaji will eventually lose his life in the battle for Kondana. Subhedar even manages to marvel us at many aspects. I am in love with how Digpal shapes the women in this world, which is about the men. Rajmata Jijabai was the epitome of bravery, and she was eventually the nurturer of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, so when she yields her sword to take down men who disrespect women, you certainly know where Maharaj’s ideals came from.

Similarly, all other women in Digpal’s script have a voice, which has been a rare occurrence in movies that talk of the war. Be it Tanaji’s wife, played by the amazing Smita Shewale, or Alka Kubal and Mrumayee Deshpande in cameos, these are not one-tone patriarchal ladies serving men but have things to say and ideas to offer. Such a good part to highlight.

The movie falters with its blueprint, though. The screenplay is abruptly cut from one sequence to the other, jumping through years without any announcement, which makes keeping track of the timeline difficult. The tonality, too, becomes too loud in parts, and that weakens the movie-watching experience.

Subhedar Movie Review: Star Performance

Chinmay Mandlekar is now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for the Marathi audience, and there is no going back. For an actor who played a terrorist in The Kashmir Files (a supremely manipulative movie), he has got a range. The actor has so far played Maharaj in all three movies Digpal has made.

Ajay Purkar understands the responsibility of playing the titular character and serves a very good performances. He transforms from a naive man, to a confident commander through the film, and there is so much ease with which he does it. The fact that he is not a superstar with abs and chiseled muscles makes him even more believable.

Mrinal Kulkarni has defined our childhood as Son Pari, and as Jijabai, she again proves what makes her relevant even in today’s time. The power she still holds with her screen presence is so good that you will only see her when she is in the frame. Fun fact, the movie also stars her real-life son Virajas Kulkarni and his wife Shivani Rangole Kulkarni.

Subhedar Movie Review
Subhedar Movie Review (Picture Credit: Youtube)

Subhedar Movie Review: Direction, Music

Digpal Lanjekar’s direction is interesting but also very compressed. He doesn’t look at things in a wide angle much, and this genre demands exactly what he doesn’t do. Too many close-ups make the aesthetics of his world look dull, and even the detail goes for a toss. Talking of details, the art and costume team needs more research because multiple times the clothes look like their were bought from Dadar market and a model of Kondana in the centre of the court seems like it was made today.

The music by Devdutta Manisha Baji is so fresh. The songs are not stereotypical but made with every aspect of the movie in mind. Every music piece is detailed and laced with era-appropriate vocals and tunes. A Sant Tukaram abhanga gets a rendition and a very powerful one. Would love to see more of Baji’s work.

Subhedar Movie Review: The Last Word

Subhedar does get dull, but nothing can take away the merit the movie holds. Go for it if this is your genre.

Ghar Banduk Biryani could be the first singing-dancing Maoist comedy or political satire ever produced. It centers on a lovelorn guerilla leader, a master biryani chef, and a loyal police officer who all cross paths in the imaginary Kollad area of Maharashtra. Nagraj Manjule, Sayaji Shinde, and Akash Thosar feature in Hemant Awtade’s Ghar Banduk Biryani. The movie has sparked attention among viewers ever since its teaser was released.

Ghar Banduk Biryani Movie Review ( Photo Credit – A Still From Ghar Banduk Biryani )

Ghar Banduk Biryani Movie Review: Script Analysis

The movie portrays a story about ambitions, stability, and struggle with undertones of love, repression, and oppression. Pallam (Sayaji Shinde), the head of a group of men who pose as “dacoits” but are actually Maoists (they wear uniforms, carry AK-47s and grenades, and are committed to their ideology), collide with Raya (Nagraj Manjule) is the subject of a Marathi film that is based on a fictional Kolagad region in Maharashtra.

Raya (Nagraj Manjule) is a no-nonsense police officer whose macho antics are best seen in slow motion. Manjule, who also produced the movie, is given a number of extended moments to demonstrate his prowess as an action star which sticks out like a sore thumb.

Pallam mourns the death of his late sweetheart so severely because of the delicious biryani she used to prepare for him and his rebel organisation. Although it seems that hunger is one of the main causes of revolution, it is unknown what spurred them on to rebel in the first place. A talented cook named Raju (Akash Thosar) is abducted by Pallam and his rebel henchmen so that he can make biryani for them, much like how his deceased lover.

Raju is compelled to stand with Pallam despite his reluctance by a government plan that offers cash and residences in exchange for surrender. A few Pallam members also turned themselves in in exchange for cash and homes. Given their lack of financial stability, this raises the question of how they could purchase high-tech weapons and ammunition like landmines and AK-47s. The problem goes unresolved throughout the film.

In any case, the outlaws are impossible to take seriously because they constantly veer between savagery and buffoonery. The narrative tone frequently changes between humour, seriousness, romance, and political tract.

Ghar Banduk Biryani Movie Review: Star Performance

Nagraj Manjule’s portrayal of supercop Raya in the movie stands out, but moments of slow-motion action that only served to promote him as an action hero could have been eliminated. All the action scenes made me think of Allu Arjun in Pushpa: The Rising and the Singham series starring Ajay Devgn.

Akash Thosar, of Sairat fame, makes an impressive performance as a young man in love who will do anything to find a home and settle down so that he can wed his ladylove (Sayli Patil). Despite the narrative favouring Manjule, Sayaji Shinde’s excellent performance as Commander Pallam shows through. When Sayaji Shinde is on screen, there is never a dull moment since he transitions between emotions with ease.

Although more exploration of Pallam’s complexities could have given this Biryani another flavour, it wasn’t done. Maybe the sequel will go deeper into Pallam and his rebel group’s intriguing backstory. The hero complex and good cop complex dominate the narrative. Sayli had a very small amount of screen time. Pravin Dalimbkar, who plays Ghura, one of the rebels, is another outstanding talent.

Ghar Banduk Biryani Movie Review ( Photo Credit – A Still From Ghar Banduk Biryani )

Ghar Banduk Biryani Movie Review: Direction, Music

Ghar Banduk Biryani is a unique commercial Marathi film that explores the Maoist issue and deals with the compassionate side of political upheaval at a time when the Marathi film industry has been producing biopics and historical films. The movie also addresses crimes committed by the caste system and the government’s and administration’s oppressive methods. Hemant Awtade deftly used dialogue and characters to craft a storyline highlighting caste and class-based inequity without overtly referencing caste.

The filmmaker deserves recognition for bringing the political and socioeconomic realities of underserved communities to light. My experience with the film’s music and sound design was amazing. In fact, the lengthy opening sequence in the jungle is tense and menacing because of the excellent camerawork by cinematographer Vikram Amladi. Nevertheless, Awtade adopted the action genre and alpha macho hero style, which didn’t work out as intended for the tale.

Nagraj Manjule’s action scenes take up a significant amount of the film’s two hours and 45 minutes of running time. Some sequences are memorable only due to their technical skill.

Ghar Banduk Biryani Movie Review: The Last Word

Despite a few oversights in the story, debutante director Hemant Awtade made an entertaining film to watch. If you like dark humour and action films, Ghar Banduk Biryani is a good watch.

What’s Good: Genelia when she has no lines and she makes the effort to bring the pain of her character alive, she shines. A bit of the second half. Riteish knows how to make good montages is my takeaway!

What’s Bad: The lead pair is so weak at the language that not a single minute of them speaking it looks organic. Also, the ‘seen this already’ ghost lurks over the film.

Ved Movie Review: Script Analysis

Marking his debut as a director, Riteish with his almost two decades of experience knows how to package a film in order to draw people towards it at least with the promotional material. He brought in a superstar to do a song (Salman Khan), hired one of the most prolific music composers to do the songs, and romanced/irked with his wife on the screen and the two have a hefty fanbase for them as a couple. Add to this a sport that is almost a religion in India, and there are almost all elements to make a film luring. But is that enough? Is packing a story and adding redemption by the end how we make films?

Screenplay by Sandeep S. Patil and Rushikesh Turai, Ved is a movie that drives on predictable notes from the word go. But the power that it possesses is creating moments. The film creates some scenes that work most efficiently in talking about the characters and the helplessness of the man-child that the protagonist of the movie is. One has to notice how Riteish adds an undertone of humour to the movie with situational comedy when he opens the movie with the hilarious commentary given by Siddharth Jadhav and Jitendra Joshi. Such is with emotions when the screenplay adds a touch of very mature romance between Satya and Shravani. The way she lends him money without making it look like he is dependent on him. It is all good to see.

Now I haven’t seen the original Naga Chaitanya starrer film, so can’t comment on which one’s better. Having heard that there are substantial changes made, it seems like there is some effort put in. A lot of it works because the filmmaker with his team takes extra efforts in creating the world around the three leading characters and does not just have them fill the mandatory boxes. But while all of this is good in parts, the larger story that will bind it together flickers. It is predictable for a big major chunk and kind of reminiscent of many films we have seen in the past with no attempt to make this version look any different.

A lot of it is also felt because the back stories take so much time that by the time Satya finds his redemption the audience is already gone ahead. The redemption part of it is good but the journey to it just weakens the grip. Also, what exactly is the timeline of this story? Even in the flashbacks when Satya and Shravani are married for 7 years already in the present, people talk about Collabs and social media like we do now. So is the present set in the future and the past is now? And where is this movie shot? They live somewhere near Alibaugh and travel to Mumbai by ferry. But there is so much inconsistency in detailing this location that you can see it easily.

Ved Movie Review: Star Performance

Riteish Deshmukh tried hard to be the mini-version of Kabir Singh/Arjun Reddy in his isolation but it doesn’t land as much. He does manage to show a range because not often is he allowed that in films that are fuelled by others. But, surprisingly, Marathi coming out of him doesn’t sound organic at any point considering he belongs to one of the most influential Maharashtrian legacies.

This is the Genelia we should have gotten years ago minus her Marathi, of course. Can’t blame her for the bad dialect because even Mr. Husband goes off there. But the way Genelia treats silences is surprising because we have never really got to see her exploring this part of her caliber. She is not just a chirpy girl but has to enact a lot of complex emotions and she does it well. Have to say it, this is a massive shift from Mister Mummy, a film I want to forget.

Jiya Shankar does what she is expected to and there is hardly any heavy lifting in her kitty. Ashok Saraf is back on screen in the mainstream after a long time and he is a performer we all must take notes from. Still using his demeanor to curate comedy it all lands perfectly even after years. More of Mama, please! So is everyone else in the secondary cast because they all do their jobs perfectly.

Ved Movie Review
Ved Movie Review Out(Photo Credit –Still From Ved)

Ved Movie Review: Direction, Music

Keep aside the movie, Riteish Deshmukh has the art of directing montages. Just see the two song sequence Besuri and Ved Tujhe, and how he shows the flashback with slow-motion shots and sharp editing techniques. He blends the music, story, and performances so well. The camera also supports him in creating those. There is indeed a director in him but he is too bud completely yet. More on the main man chair might give us a skilled director someday.

Ajay-Atul’s music fits in the scheme of things for the film well. I am dicey about the recall value of this album though. Also, why is the title track featuring Salman put in the end and not somewhere in the middle? Not everyone sits through the end credits, so why not use it somewhere substantial?

Ved Movie Review: The Last Word

Ved has good things laced with predictability and that kills the vibe. The redemption comes late for the protagonist but the audience might find theirs much before that.

What’s Good: It shines in a crowd of recent Marathi historic films and avoids being typical for the genre

What’s Bad: Driven by a similar concept as Pawankhind, which was released earlier this year & has already been watched by many

Loo Break: Interval would be enough!

Watch or Not?: Even if you are aware of the history of Bajiprabhu Deshpande, it’s definitely a must-watch for Sharad Kelkar and Subodh Bhave’s terrific performances

Language: Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu & Kannada

Available On: Theatrical release

Runtime: 162 Minutes

User Rating:

There’s a wave of films based on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his unsung warriors in the Marathi film industry. This one is another addition to the list. This time, it’s a tale of Baji Prabhu Deshpande and his sacrifice for Maharaj’s goal of attaining Swarajya. Baji Prabhu loses his life in the battle of Ghodkhind to help Maharaj make his way to Vishalgad after escaping Panhalgad. Yes, it’s a similar concept on which Pawankhind was based, but this film explores the more unknown facets of Bajiprabhu’s life.

Har Har Mahadev Movie Review: Script Analysis

The basic tale of Baji Prabhu Deshpande’s courage and sacrifice is known to many. TV shows and Digpal Lanjekar’s Pawankhind have shown it in an effective way, but still, this film holds its ground. Apart from the larger-than-life narration, this Abhijeet Deshpande directorial discusses the human side of Baji Prabhu.

Apart from a tale of being a great warrior, the film shows Baji (played by Sharad Kelkar) being vulnerable. We see him facing betrayal at the hands of his own brother, dying to win back his son’s respect and desperately waiting to prove his ‘imaan’ for Swarajya. It explores such unknown things about one of the greatest warriors, which deserves a chance to be told. The template of the film is a tried and tested one but still keeps you engaged due to its fresh approach.

The first half is terrific and highly engaging. Post interval, Har Har Mahadev slows down a bit due to a lack of exciting things happening. Thankfully, it gets back on track in time. Emotional moments, especially between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (Subodh Bhave) and Baji Prabhu Deshpande, are a treat along with a powerful climax.

Har Har Mahadev Movie Review: Star Performance

Sharad Kelkar gives his best-ever performance as Baji Prabhu Deshpande. We have seen Sharad being a macho man but the actor proves his range with this one. Be it emotions or action scenes, the actor has given his 100%. Hopefully, he gets more such powerful roles in the future.

Subodh Bhave is a masterclass of acting and he’s already proven his worth through a variety of roles. As Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, he brings out his own different version which successfully shows the vulnerable side of a warrior king.

Other than the leading duo, Milind Shinde shines by adding his own quirk as Siddi Johar. The rest of the actors do their job well.

Har Har Mahadev Movie Review: Direction, Music

It’s more than a regular period drama with loads of action and goosebumps moments. It works more due to the human emotions of larger-than-life characters, which has been handled really well by Abhijeet Deshpande. There are moments which might come off as cliché but it doesn’t bother you much.

All songs support the film well along with a powerful BGM, but it’s the ‘Baji Ra’ song which keeps playing in your head even after leaving the theatre.

Har Har Mahadev Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Har Har Mahadev is driven by a story which has already been told but still deserves your watch on the big screen due to its emotional treatment. It’s more than a war drama!

Three and a half stars!

What’s Good: It’s the Marathi film industry’s brave attempt of showcasing historic tales on a grand scale

What’s Bad: The length isn’t that long but the film at points, makes you feel so

Loo Break: Other than the interval, there are some scenes where you won’t mind skipping them for a loo

Watch or Not?: It deserves support so that more such big Marathi films come in future. Do watch it!

The film is set during the mid to late 17th century. We are introduced to the cold-blooded Mughal emperor Aurangzeb (Mohan Joshi), who is about to reward Sarja Khan (Raqesh Bapat) for killing the Maratha empire’s military commander. Then the film runs in a flashback and we are introduced to an unsung hero, Hansaji Mohite, also popularly known as Sarsenapati Hambirrao (Pravin Tarde) as per the name given to him by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Right after taking over as military commander, Hambirrao successfully leads the campaign of looting the Bahadurgad (Pedgaon fort) with his unusual yet effective methods. After the passing away of Shivaji Maharaj (Gashmeer Mahajani), he continues his position under Sambhaji Maharaj and dies a death of a warrior who stays loyal to his swarajya and king till the last breath.

The film unveils many lesser-known chapters from the life of Hambirrao, which exhibit his fearlessness.

Sarsenapati Hambirrao Movie Review: Script Analysis

Fresh from Dharmaveer, I had high expectations from Pravin Tarde for this one and that’s where I was slightly pushed back. Be it Dharmaveer or his Mulshi Pattern, Tarde had a watertight script in his hand, which was on point. Here, our beloved man starts off well but loses tracks at several points. At points, it becomes more of a film based on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with Hambirrao becoming just a supporting character. It feels like much more of Hambirrao could have been shown.

In Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji, the titular character was given full space. Even if we talk about the Marathi blockbuster Pawankhind, other characters were given more importance, so it looked like a film based on one particular chapter from Maratha history. Here, the focus gets lost in bits and pieces, and then again the main character of Hambirrao takes over.

If we neglect weak points, the film presents events like the loot of Bahadurgad and a conflict between Marathas and Portuguese in an engaging cinematic manner.

Sarsenapati Hambirrao Movie Review: Star Performance

Pravin Tarde nails the character of Hansaji Mohite aka Hambirrao. Tarde looks effortless as his real-life persona very well suits the character’s demand, bringing out that adorable rawness. Separate marks for his amazing body transformation and dedication for giving it all to a physically demanding role.

While Tarde is the titular character, the man who impressed me the most is Gashmeer Mahajani. He plays both Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Sambhaji Maharaj. As Shivaji Maharaj, Gashmeer carries traits of calmness and intrigue perfectly, and his sudden change as aggressive Sambhaji Maharaj is applaudable. His screen presence alone holds your attention.

Veteran Mohan Joshi fits Aurangzeb’s character perfectly like it’s tailor-made as his aura makes it look more powerful. Raqesh Bapat gets nothing to add as Sarja Khan and does just an okay job.

Others including Shruti Marathe, Upendra Limaye and Devendra Gaikwad are good in their parts.

Sarsenapati Hambirrao Movie Review: Direction, Music

It felt like in order to give more attention to acting, Pravin Tarde missed that golden touch as director by an inch. The film is the most expensive one in the Marathi film industry and its scenes justify it. However, unlike previous films of Tarde, this isn’t fully engaging and could have been shortened in length. Battle scenes are visually appealing with a lot of bloodshed but lack that punch of adrenaline rush. Yes, in emotions, this man is bang on once again. So, it’s a mixed bag here for Tarde.

Thankfully, the background score stays with the narrative and avoids glorifying unnecessary moments with its loudness. Songs aren’t memorable but go well with the film.

Special mention to cinematographer Mahesh Limaye for bringing the best out of each scene. His frames justify the scale of the film and there are many takeaways as visual treats, especially the scene featuring Gashmeer and Tarde with the sun rising in the background.

Sarsenapati Hambirrao Movie Review: The Last Word

It’s not as tighter as Pravin Tarde’s previous work but still makes up for a good one time watch for its visually appealing shots, performances, and sincerity in taking the Marathi industry to the next level in production value.

Three stars!

It’s the day of 26th August 2021, the 20th death anniversary of the late Anand Dighe. Dighe was an ardent Shivsainik (a term used for political party Shivsena’s workers), who was blessed with hardcore and loyal set of followers across the Thane district. The day is so important for Thanekars (residents of the Thane district) that thousands of them gather to give a tribute to their beloved man. A media reporter (Shruti Marathe), who is covering the news for the day, actually feels the people are paid there just to arrive and it’s more of a show-off event. Her research is incomplete as she’s too ‘Google dependent’. Sadly, the search engine has too less information about Dighe to share. She (and so do the audience who don’t know much about Dighe) is left stunned when Dighe’s admirers share their real experiences and stories about their beloved ‘daadhi waale’ saheb.

The film unfolds lesser to some unknown events from the life of late Anand Dighe, who is immortal in the hearts of many.

Dharmaveer Movie Review: Script Analysis

Anand Dighe was a powerful and intriguing political figure of his time, and he still remains a strong political force in the politics of Thane. It is said that back in those days, he had his ‘darbaar’, a place where every suppressed used to be served justice by Saheb in his own style. Rising above the party line, he was more of a messiah for people. All these things have been heard ‘n’ number of times, but thankfully, this film tells us many unknown stories about Dighe which deserve to be known.

Right from the rise of Anand Dighe as a party worker to how he becomes a sarkar for many, the film treats us with incidents which are inspired by true events. At points, there’s an extra bit of swag and slo-mo shots which are purely meant to please the masses. Towards the end, the film feels a bit stretched.

The film works in a flashback and it once again proves to be a perfect template to narrate a biopic. It doesn’t complicate things for a normal audience and is easily traceable.

The cinematography is good as every frame looks fresh without any forced attempt to look stand out. The casting and makeup department deserves kudos for bringing suitable actors on board and creating an impact replica of real-life figures. VFX work isn’t up to the mark, especially in scenes which involve spilling blood.

Dharmaveer Movie Review: Star Performance

Prasad Oak delivers the breakthrough performance in a titular role. His first look was itself eye-catchy and impressive and in the film, he elevates it further with his convincing act. Looks like he has done good research and the way he has captured those mannerisms (be it talking or style of walking) is simply superb.

Kshitish Date as Eknath Shinde once again proves his potential after Mulshi Pattern. There’s one emotional scene between him and Oak, which will surely make you cry.

Others like Makrand Paddhye, Shruti Marathe and others too have done justice to their characters.

(Pic Credit: Movie Still)

Dharmaveer Movie Review: Direction, Music

Pravin Tarde once again hits it out of the park after Mulshi Pattern. The film could have been just a fans’ service, but thankfully it scores higher more than just being a crowd-pleaser. Tarde’s hold on emotional scenes is too good and he proves his mettle once again here. His way of storytelling clicks with the audience.

Music by Chinar-Mahesh supports the film well and Ashtami worked a big time for me.

Dharmaveer Movie Review: The Last Word

Pravin Tarde has once again delivered a film to be remembered after Mulshi Pattern. It’s an engaging ride filled with loads of emotions and performances that deserve kudos. It’s a must-watch for those who want to know why Thanekars worship ‘daadhi waale’ Saheb along with their gods!

Three and a half stars!

Chandramukhi Movie Review: Script Analysis

A very few filmmakers, not just in Marathi but pan-India, are taking the effort to restore and present authentic culture and its glory for and to the audience. Prasad Oak makes an earnest attempt with his team at creating Chandramukhi as a tribute to the rich culture of Lavani and the poetry that comes with it. There is an aching heart, not just that of a lover but an artist whose shine is long forgotten and now she is forced to almost sell her body. Also, hats off to the team for promoting the movie and letting the world know that the Marathi industry is also walking with them.

Screenplay written by Chinmay Mandlekar, Chandramukhi is a perfect formula to make a movie deep-rooted in culture with a centerpiece of a love story that not just challenges the norms of society, but is also unsure in itself. His name is Daulat, he represents the power in the dynamic, but in a parallel life, he is also dependent on the charity of his father-in-law. She is Chandramukhi, one with a moon-like face, beautiful yet with a metaphoric mark (daag). Together they are powerful, but also vulnerable and fickle. Add to this Ajay-Atul’s breathing music and you have a product that will pull audience towards it.

The movie even manages to create the effect of a love story that is doomed and is sure to face tragic roads soon enough. They meet in a brothel where the woman of his dreams has kept herself safe from the Predators. The writing around this love story is delicate. These are two humans who are feeling love maybe for the first time. Their hearts are poetic, though one recites the poem of pain and other of love, they complete each other. Everytime the camera shifts to the brothel it instantly takes the poetic gaze and is the best part about the movie.

But when the camera moves out of Chandramukhi’s den, the poetry is lost. And this is where the problem begins. Looking at the set up one could easily suspend their disbelief, but when you aren’t making it clear which era it is and then add elements from different decades in one it all becomes heavy to process. Add to this the missing poetry from the scenes that only have Daulat. Because every time he is inside Chandra’s court it is his heaven and you can’t question its whereabouts, but the real-world needs to be edged out and created with even more delicateness. Everything becomes one tone and ends up diluting the flavour the film begins with.

The second half messes things even more. A film that could easily be at least 20 minutes shorter, Chandramukhi after a point goes on and on without a purpose. A forced conflict and a scattered disaster management scene later the climax looks half baked and disconnected from everything. The tonality changes so fast that you cannot keep in sync with it.

Credit where it’s due, dialogues by Chinmay in Chandramukhi are mature. Metaphors are piercing and the words describing them make sure they hit you at the right spot. My personal favourite is the Madame of the brothel saying, “Dev hatavar thuktoy bolla tar tyala olya mendi cha kautuk nhi dakhvava.” There are many such and they are a treat.

Chandramukhi Movie Review: Star Performance

Amruta Khanvilkar is an actor who can do amazing work if given a good director. With a film on her shoulders, she manages to have the depth in her eyes and pain in her demeanour. She is exploited, looked at with a bad gaze, and even tried to be sold. So when a man appreciates her voice and not her beauty, she cannot help but fall for him. I cannot forget her dancing on Bai Ga. She talks about her love for Daulat and Khanvilkar makes sure you feel it with her expressions. There is scope for improvement, but the actor has come a long way. Her dancing skills need no validation from anyone.

Addinath Kothare does a decent job at being a man confused between love, home and power. His character speaks less and emotes more majorly and the actor tries hard he does that. But have to accept that he does fall flat in front of Amruta and Sameer Choughule couple of times.

Mrunmayee Despande gets to play the pained wife who has learned about her husband’sectra marital affair. It’s a character she can cakewalk and she does. Choughule is a complete package. Such a fun and seasoned actor to witness.

Chandramukhi Movie Review Ft. Amruta Khanvilkar(Photo Credit: Poster From Chandramukhi)

Chandramukhi Movie Review: Direction, Music

Prasad Oak’s direction is very visual and he knows how to create frames. He knows which scenes will manipulate emotions and what is to be catered to whom. But he forgets he can’t make everyone happy and tries to do exactly that. He kind of stuffs Chandramukhi with something for everyone. This ends up blurring out the main purpose. While his focus is on the story and the folk, he goes extra mile to announce that he wants people to be aware about Lavani, which looks like he is spoon-feeding his viewers.

Ajay-Atul create an album that is rooted in the story and folk and doesn’t really follow their USP structure. I can talk about Bai Ga for hours and that is my most favourite from this album. Can we take a moment to appreciate Ashish Patil & Dipali Vichare for the authenticity they bring to their respective choreographies.

But the music videos of the said songs are killed by the editing and camera movement. Can DOP Sanjay Memane’s camera stay still and let us Marvel at Khanvilkar’s amazing dancing talent? At least Bai Ga has some therav because it demands, but the title track is butchered by sharp cuts and hammy effects. Refer to Bhansali shooting one of his dance numbers and compare it with Chandra music video, you will know. Also, the idea of releasing entire music videos beforehand wasn’t a good decision, there wasn’t much of a surprise element I expect from an Ajay-Atul musical.

Chandramukhi Movie Review: The Last Word

She calls him her Krishna, he calls her Goddess of her own temple, I wish that same poetry stayed alive throughout making the aching heart beat clearer. The extra half star is for the earnest effort. You can watch Chandramukhi in theatres near you.

Sher Shivraj is the fourth film of Digpal Lanjekar’s series of movies based on the important chapters of history during Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj reign.

It takes us back to the time when Shivaji Maharaj has got a stronghold in the parts of Maval. As the region falls under the jurisdiction of the Adilshahi sultanate, they want to stop Shivaji Maharaj at any cost. In Bijapur’s court of Adilshahi, the mission to catch the Maratha king is announced and it’s Afzalkhan who takes up the task in his hands.

Afzalkhan leaves Bijapur along with his huge army, destroying temples and sacred places to irk Shivaji Maharaj. On the other hand, the great Maratha warrior keeps his calm and plans how to handle his enemy while he shifts his position to Pratapgarh fort.

It shows how Shivaji Maharaj, despite a limited army and weapons, dares to deal with a monster-like enemy with brilliant strategies.

Sher Shivraj Movie Review: Script Analysis

The battle of Pratapgarh is a well-known chapter of Indian history and the subject has a lot of potential if executed well. But despite an important thread in the hand, the story fails to weave magic as the film moves at a very slow pace.

The film entirely revolves around Afzalkhan, but there’s no build-up to his character, thus curbing his menacing impact throughout the film. There are some moments which look thrilling and add value to the narration but the film loses track so often that even some genuinely good scenes get wasted.

Historical dramas are about the grandeur, well-established characters and intriguing subplots, but this one falls short in every single department. It’s hard to believe, that Pawankhind and Sher Shivraj are penned by the same person (Digpal Lanjekar).

Sher Shivraj Movie Review: Star Performance

Chinmay Mandlekar is one of the rare positives to be taken from the film. After Farzand, Fatteshikast and Pawankhind, he looks consistent and subtle in his act of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. His pauses, body language and dialogue delivery look convincing as a great Maratha warrior.

Mukesh Rishi plays the role of Afzhalkhan. We have seen enough good work from him in Hindi movies and one can’t doubt his calibre as an antagonist. However, here he fails in giving enough chills and looks plain here (of course, bad character sketch to be blamed).

Mrinal Kulkarni and Vaibhav Mangle have done their parts well. Others in supporting roles are just about okay and no one really stands out.

Sher Shivraj Movie Review: Direction, Music

A tighter budget doesn’t necessarily need to compress the end product, and we have seen it in Pawankhind. Unlike previous Marathi films, the film had some really good warfare sequences and one could see how Digpal Lanjekar treated them as USP. Here, in Sher Shivraj, he looks confused and does sleepwalking in his job. Even the important climax scene looks very ordinary and there’s no excitement in it. Neither emotional nor fight scenes are impressive, making the length of 153 minutes a yawnful journey!

Talking about the VFX work, it’s one of the worst that has been witnessed in recent times. To give an example, there are a couple of fight scenes in which half a sword looks clearly feels like an animated work with the lower part of a sword being invisible.

There are a couple of songs and both are passable, not worth remembering. Background music is good in some places but fails in carrying the momentum in most of the scenes.

Sher Shivraj Movie Review: The Last Word

Being the next part of Digpal Lanjekar’s historical film series after the super successful Pawankhind works against the film as it fails to live up to its huge expectations a big time. Not a film that the Marathi industry needs at this time!

Two stars!

What’s Good: A fresh perspective & organic towards relationship dramas for the Marathi industry. Plus it’s entirely shot on smartphones. Wow!

What’s Bad: The screenplay does feel lazy at some parts that look disjointed. Glue is missing majorly in the first half.

Loo Break: The beauty of the city might make you wait.

Watch Or Not: If you are a fan of relationship dramas that deal with longing and ways to fill up the void left by a close one, here’s a treat.

Pondicherry Movie Review: Script Analysis:

It is such a fresh perspective to look at relationships at their breaking points and not really judge either of the two involved for their decisions. Be it the latest Hindi release Gehraiyaan or Pondicherry that is a unique relationship drama. Set in the vibrant landscape, the movie is about three people waiting for their better halves in a way, but will they ever come is a question that haunts forever.

Written by Sachin Kundalkar and Tejas Modak, the script brings a new trajectory to the genre for the Marathi cinema, and a much needed newness to the storytelling methods the industry was long stuck with. Pondicherry tries to bring the concept of cross-pollination and cultural exchange to the Marathi audience quite beautifully. The efforts taken to learn a different language by the actors, and not really force Marathi on a landscape that doesn’t speak it makes the film more organic and authentic.

The narrative is about three incomplete people finding the missing piece of their puzzle unknowingly. The city happens to be the reason for them to meet. They have their different needs from the place. The story explores a divorce, a wife waiting for her husband who has met with an accident but was never declared dead, another woman going into a bad marriage just because her mother wants her to and more. When they meet at one point what happens is the story majorly.

It isn’t a film with a hidden message or talking about a very larger context. It’s personal and emotional. Here is a man who was once good, but now practices evil. A woman and her son who live like friends handle a house by sharing responsibilities. Their dynamic is cute but at the same time a representation and homage to all the single parents and their kids who kind of grow up at a very early age. There is a girl dominated by her fiancé who is a misogynistic man-child. Writers don’t go the dramatic way to portray these emotions. It is told to us in a very subtle way. This is their life and how they live whether you like it or not. The gaze is never of pity or disgust or judgemental, but always bold and clear.

Pondicherry is in the moments, be it serious or happy or just a wide shot of the roads where walls are painted with fascination. It has its own pace, slow and peaceful. If that isn’t how you like your films, you must try this one. I am holding back from giving spoilers but you have to see when the emotions get on the serious side. All three are at dead ends in their lives and the climax that it creates is one of the most comforting and satisfying ones I have seen in the recent times.

What the movie does falter in is giving the much needed glue to the scenes in the first half. The flow isn’t as organic as the second half and the parts look disjointed.

Pondicherry Movie Review: Star Performance:

Sai Tamhankar has a unique command over the screen. She does not have to do anything to get noticed, but when she does something, she makes sure you see. Her silence, to her discomfort, to her trust issues and longing, you can see it all in her eyes. Even her posture is enough to tell you baggage of the character.

Vaibhav Tatwawadi is suddenly a beefed up tall man, in front of whom Sai looks like a small framed teenager. The actor plays a character who goes through a transformation and change in heart. Vaibhav does bring the honesty to his performance. The makers should have edged out his character a bit more and explored his loneliness more closely. Besides, the crying in his department isn’t as hard hitting as Sai’s.

Amruta Khanvilkar gets to play the oppressed girl who never had the authority over her life decisions. While she does break free and asks for agency, we deserved more of her.

Pondicherry Movie Review (Pic Credit: Youtube/Planet Marathi)

Pondicherry Movie Review: Direction & Music:

Sachin Kundalkar takes the ‘art house mixed with drama’ route to make Pondicherry. He doesn’t settle for the old formula and make another rom-com. Rather he goes out of his way to give his movie a unique touch. He looks at his story in wide shots. That must also be the reason he chose a picturesque city to set it in.

DOP Milind Jog must be celebrated for cracking this one. He shoots the entire movie on iPhone X and it is unbelievable. The frames, to colour tones, to the stability everything is on point. The camera moves like we are involved in the story and it is so indulging.

Debarpito Saga’s music is fresh and suits the setup. Mohan Kanan’s Tu Jaa Teher is staying in my playlist for some time.

Pondicherry Movie Review (Pic Credit: Youtube/Planet Marathi)

Pondicherry Movie Review: The Last Words:

Pondicherry is more personal. You don’t come across films so tenderly handling the emotions of relationships. You must not miss this one. Watch it with your loved ones this Sunday afternoon.

The great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (played by Chinmay Mandlekar), and his loyal maavlas (soldiers) are trapped in the fort of Panhala and are surrounded by troops of Adil Shah II led by Siddi Johar (Sameer Dharmadhikari) and his son-in-law Siddi Masud (Astad Kale). It’s a tale of how Maharaj strategically tries dodging his enemies to take control of Vishalgad, resulting in a land stand, known as the Battle of Pawankhind.

Pawankhind Movie Review: Script Analysis

The biggest risk in such historic dramas is to churn out a compelling script without distorting facts and taking too much cinematic liberty. Digpal Lanjekar (who is the director of the film as well) does a great job at maintaining a good balance.

The characters are given enough space to contribute handsomely to the story, with a couple of them giving a good comic relief. There are many goosebumps moments, keeping viewers stuck in their seats. Not just more of action and thrill, but a good chunk of a narrative is dedicated to an emotional quotient that involves families of maavlas.

In short, it’s a one step up in the writing department for Lanjekar from his previous outings – Farzand and Fatteshikast.

Pawankhind Movie Review: Star Performance

Chinmay Mandlekar is hands down an amazing actor! Speaking about the character of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Chinmay plays it for the third time after Farzand and Fatteshikast. He has completely nailed it. While he shines when uttering dialogues, he is even more impactful when it comes to acting through his intense eyes and silence.

Ajay Purkar shines in the role of Bajiprabhu Deshpande. Be it his powerful physique, flawlessly delivering adrenaline-pumping dialogues, or carrying the warrior’s aura, Purkar does complete justice. It’s good to see Sameer Dharmadhikari after a long time. His Siddi Johar’s act is mystique and engrossing.

Actors like Mrunal Kulkarni, Ankit Mohan, Astad Kale, Harish Dudhade and Prajakta Mali excel in their parts.

Pawankhind Movie Review: Direction, Music

Digpal Lanjekar has a track record of delivering good historic dramas, but this time he has outdone himself by giving us a MASTERPIECE! Taking the route of a flashback for the narration, Lanjekar plays a good stroke. He tries to maintain a good balance of commercial value and rawness, in which he succeeds except for a few instances.

Here’s a special mention of an emotional scene between Maharaj and Bajiprabhu before the historic land stand & a battle sequence featuring injured Bajiprabhu taking on enemies.

The background score is good but during a few scenes, it overpowers dialogues. Songs elevate the emotions in the movie, and ‘Raja aala’, ‘Yugat Mandli’ to remain in your ears even after leaving theatres.

Pawankhind Movie Review: The Last Word

With a good motive of making unsung heroes shine, the film succeeds to a great extent. It’s more than just a popcorn flick. It’s an inspiring and compelling tale weaved beautifully in an entertaining package meant for big screens!

Kaasav (Turtle) Movie Review: Script Analysis

If you have witnessed even a single Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar movie before this, their superpower is ‘Meditation In Cinema’. A genre I enjoy the most. It isn’t always the words that convey their message, but the silences speak louder. The duo even use clouds to their convenience and makes them tell their stories.

Such is the brilliance that has been carried forward in Kaasav, that is metaphoric yet practical and one of the most soothing narratives about the current times. The base line is about people finding solace and motivation to live. In her writing, late Bhave shapes a woman who isn’t the ideal mother or the epitome of honesty and resilience. Rather she is afraid, and broken from inside. She is mending and while in the process finds another completely broken partner.

Kaasav is about two halves coming together to become one. Together they heal. The name highly metaphoric talks about the breading process of Turtles. They lay eggs on shores creating a safe environment for their to be born children and head back to the ocean. Their children then have to find their way in their world but they don’t really meet their mother ever and that is how their ecosystem functions. The story of Kaasav resembles to the same. A woman takes a stranger child under her shell and nurtures him to fight the world someday.

Bhave in her screenplay writes the movie in layers. It is not from the perspective of either of her two main leads. Both are equally unknown to us until the open up to each other and tell their stories. It is then that we understand their motive to be self-destructive and how the cure also exists in them too.

Kaasav is a simple tale that takes inspiration from nature. It talks about the self-healing process in the most commonly understood language and is a masterclass. Wait for everytime the writing makes sure to remind you that these are flawed humans. Though modern, but still very highly flawed. They hide secrets, are prey to bad habits, but that does not define them. They are bigger than their shortcomings and the 105 minutes are a journey to that realisation.

Kaasav (Turtle) Movie Review: Star Performance

There is no way Kaasav could have worked without the actors who act like they really exist in this story. The way they are sound with their surroundings and become one with it is the power. Irawati and Alok are playing some sort of game where they enhance each other’s work whenever together on screen. As Janaki, Irawati has tough shoes to fill. She is a woman who is herself fighting trauma but has to become the anchor for another trauma struck individual.

Amol Rajwade, an immensely talented theatre artist and an equally beautiful singer is why Irawati’s performance shines. His initial resistance to final surrender is a journey and not just a montage, but a complete process and one that involves you. Rajwade’s nuanced performance comes out glorious.

Mohan Agashe becomes a beautiful storyteller of sorts. He highlights when important and brings in a beautiful vibe. He is also a producer. Kishore Kadam is an effortless actor and camouflages himself completely. Watch out his transition. Omkar Ghadi as a little Parshu is a the most adorable node of the film. Symbolically even he is finding a home and a umbrella to heal. Watch to know who becomes his refuge.

Kaasav (Turtle) Movie Review: Direction, Music

No words can describe the master storytellers Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar are. Every aspect of their filmmaking has a unique story to tell and they sit together beautifully to become one. The drama is at its peak, but everything is subtle. Even the outburst are surprising but calculated.

The nature, its glory and the healing lesson is what the camera tells through multiple wide shots. The ocean as a leitmotif in their process works strongly. There is a sense of satisfaction with every frame. Seems like this was the best they were expecting, this making us happy. Cinematographers Dhananjay Kulkarni and Amol Salunke let their cameras go wild and capture everything in their raw form.

Handheld shots following actors. Camera moving between locals and waves crashing the lens gives it a documentary vibe. As if someone’s real life is being captured.

Music by Saket Kanetkar is to the point and soothing. Also, no one ever informed me how amazing a singer Rajwade is. When he joins Janaki along, it is a treat.

Kaasav (Turtle) Movie Review: The Last Word

Kaasav is a result of a lot of heart and empathy towards humans who battle their minds. Sumitra, Sunil and their team know what it means to be homeless metaphorically and they aim to help many find it through this movie. We miss you legend!

Neel is a failed engineer burdened with a dark secret he’s been carrying for a long time.

Though being committed in their lives with other people, Neha & Neel bond over the dreary happenings in their lives. They share their dark secrets with each other in the hope of finding a solution. June Movie Review: Script Analysis

Nikhil Mahajan’s story says a lot taking just 90 minutes for your time. Now, that might not be totally a good thing because certain things need time to build a connection. This gets emotional even before the film begins as the makers thank the legendary director Nishi sir (Nishikant Kamat), reminding us of how we won’t be able to aboard a ‘Dombivali Fast’ even after the lockdown ends. It’s dark. Yes, that’s the best adjective I could get to describe Mahajan’s story, dark. It’s so dark that one extreme scene involves the lead actor doing something strange to his pen*s.

But, is all this darkness worth it? That’s a different debate because to lead your viewers to that darkness, you need them to see the characters’ brightly lit life before it, but that doesn’t happen here. You’re thrown straight into the already gloomy lives of Neel & Neha. Revolving around the difficult-to-explain concept of ‘letting go’, the script tackles multiple sub-plots – one between the leads, and they both have their backstories that involve other people. It’s not cinematically possible to tackle all of them in just 90 minutes.

Nikhil Mahajan & Hrishikesh Petwe’s editing is for sure fast-paced, but as explained above, it takes from the emotional depth. Quais Waseeq’s camerawork, for most of the time, follows the basic route, but he goes out of his way to include some neatly placed low angle & drone shots.

June Movie Review: Star Performance

Nehha Pendse Bayas is pure magic in this, a dark one, though. From instilling the confidence in her character to be independent to tackling the ghosts from her past, she nails every possible aspect. She goes to 🥺 from 😑 instantly for a scene, and that showcases her affluent range.

Siddharth Menon plays Neel at the risk of looking like Kabir Singh/Arjun Reddy, but he brings a set of raw emotions. He plays Neel’s complexities with the proper conviction required for such a role. Gifted with most of the meat, Siddharth leaves no chance to make a mark for himself.

Post her stint in Breathe Into The Shadows & Ek Thi Begum, this is Resham Shrivardhan’s debut Marathi film, and she’s just about fine. It’s partially also because of the weak writing around her character Nicky. Sanskruti Balgude is just there for a couple of scenes and adds nothing noteworthy.

Kiran Karmarkar, as Neel’s dad, is another victim of average character-sketch as he could’ve added a whole lot of depth to the existing turmoil. Nilesh Diwekar as the colony’s stereotyped president is wasted. Jitendra Joshi’s cameo towards the end adds nothing out-of-the-box to the script, but it’s always a joy to watch him act.

June Movie Review: Direction, Music

Suhrud Godbole, Vaibhav Khisti’s direction is ordinary, to sum up in a word. Totally relying on Mahajan’s script, the direction doesn’t add anything to intrigue you apart from its dialogue-heavy nature, which is because of its writing. That’s where an ‘I’m Thinking Of Ending Things’ stands out, relying on both brilliant writing and outstanding direction. Mahajan’s story has uncertainty and vulnerability, but it misses to push the bar of absurdity. A top-of-my-head example is Neel’s friendship with his friend in the hostel is never developed correctly, but it gets a dark twist which is wasted because you just cannot connect with it.

Shalmali Kholgade’s music beautifully gels with the aura of June. But it’s missing a couple of good tracks which would’ve made a greater impact. ‘Baba’ remains to be the best track, but its timing takes away its bleak charm.

June Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done; it’s a complex story of two complicated strangers-turned-more-than-friends finding out a simple way to live their lives. Backed with two absorbing performances, a beautiful message, it still feels incomplete because of the rushed script.

Two and a half stars!
