Just like Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat (Fahadh Faasil) hears the sound of “Pushpa, Pushpa, Pushpa… Pushpa” in his mind, it was all “Pushpa, Pushpa… Pushpa” in the last few weeks. Possibly the biggest sequel in the history of Indian cinema had us all waiting with bated breath. Part one was sheer madness, and the way it ended with a face-off between Pushpa (Allu Arjun) and Shekhawat, everyone was excited to their core to catch the battle in part two. The film had been in the buzz ever since it went on floors, and it was written that whenever it arrived in theatres, it would create a box office tornado.

The way sequels or franchise films are faring, especially in the post-pandemic era, it was a no-brainer that Pushpa 2 would shatter records. Ever since the announcement was made, Shaitaan managed to keep momentum in its favor. It was made clear that the film is an official remake of 2023’s Gujarati film, Vash. While films like Jersey, Vikram Vedha, and Bholaa failed, Drishyam 2 was a huge success due to the unavailability of the Hindi dubbed version of the original film. Shaitaan is enjoying a good response in multiplexes across the country in tier 1 and tier 2 cities. Regions like Mumbai, NCR, and Bengaluru, especially, are going smoothly.

Generally, it’s a common box office norm that for a Bollywood film, which is mostly targeted towards the urban audience, the opening day comes slightly higher than the double the advance booking numbers. So, for Shaitaan, day 1 will definitely be higher than 10 crores, with 4.20 crores gross coming from the advance booking alone. However, the Mahashivratri factor will take it closer to the mark of 15 crores.

With a halo effect of Pathaan, a collection in the range of 35-40 crores looked possible. But now, it seems that even getting to 25 crores is a big task. It now entirely depends on the performance of the evening and night shows.

The day 1 collection is aiming to go above 15 crores, which is a promising start considering the competition in the form of Dunki.

Speaking about the positives, the Hindi version has been receiving favorable word-of-mouth and is said to be a grand comeback of Prabhas. If this positivity continues till the last show of the night, the film will storm the ticket windows from tomorrow onwards. Another thing is that the issues of screen/show distribution are solved, and a good showcasing has been given to this biggie. So, a solid collection is expected during the extended opening weekend, lasting till Monday.

Coming to the positives, the film has all that hype around itself due to being a part of Spy Universe and a continuation of the Tiger franchise. Such big films have the potential to do record-breaking business during any period of the year, but releasing the Salman Khan starrer during Diwali is a masterstroke decision taken by YRF. Diwali is a lucrative period for Bollywood, and even if the content isn’t that good, films tend to do good business due to holidays. So, at least till the holidays, Tiger 3 will rake in superb numbers.

There are some films that don’t need any promotional material to create hype around themselves, and one such is Leo. Ever since the announcement was made, the film has been in the news and garnering eyeballs. Of course, a lot of credit goes to director Lokesh Kanagaraj, whose popularity is rising with each passing day ever since he made a masterpiece like Vikram. Lokesh has become more of a brand, all thanks to his style of filmmaking and LCU (Lokesh Cinematic Universe).

Fans were already excited to see Thalapathy Vijay and Lokesh reuniting after Master, and then, rumors about Leo being a part of LCU ignited the fire. These couple of factors did their job and created a good buzz around this project.

Yes, there is one complaint of mine about the makers that they didn’t care to promote their film in the Hindi market, as they were releasing the Hindi version just for the sake of formality. Remember, the makers had a star face like Sanjay Dutt and the excitement factor of LCU, but they failed to capitalize on it. Even they underestimated the loyal Hindi fan base of Thalapathy Vijay. Still, the film enjoyed a sort of awareness and genuine interest among the audience, all thanks to the ever-increasing popularity of Lokesh post-Vikram and LCU as a whole.

All in all, Leo looked like a much more promising affair compared to Thalapathy Vijay’s previous releases.

Despite no promotion, the film crossed the opening day of all previous Thalapathy Vijay films through advance booking alone. Yes, the Hindi dubbed version saw pre-sales of 1.40 crores gross, which made it clear that the occupancy will be decent throughout the country, with walk-ins contributing further. Remember that Leo is not playing in National Cinema Chains; still, it has shown a good response in the Hindi belt today.

Speaking about the positives, it’s officially out that the Thalapathy Vijay starrer is a part of LCU, and that will attract footfall to theatres. The word-of-mouth has been decent, too, so far, and it will allow the film to enjoy a good run over the first extended weekend. Speaking about the competitors, Ganapath is the only prominent film that will arrive tomorrow. Even if it turns out to be a very good affair, Leo will get its share of the audience.

Now, coming to the negatives, Leo is being said to be the weakest film in LCU, and such feedback might hamper the box office in the long run. Due to very low buzz, Mission Raniganj suffered in the advance booking for day 1. It was reflected in the occupancy all across the country. In the morning shows, the film recorded a dismal occupancy of around 5%, as even the over-the-counter ticket sales didn’t help in the early shows.

Talking about the positives, the film, despite all its flaws and shortcomings, is enjoying decent feedback for its extraordinary rescue story and earnest performance of Akshay Kumar. Films based on real-life incidents always have that curiosity factor attached to them, and this one, too, has that advantage. At the box office, there are no new releases and only holdover films like Fukrey 3 and Jawan are running successfully in theatres, so there’s an absence of any major competition.

Now, coming to the negatives, the film has low to no hype, lowering the chances for the film to rake in good numbers during the opening weekend. Currently, the market condition isn’t favorable for an Akshay Kumar film. As mentioned above, the euphoria Akshay enjoyed before the pre-Covid has hit the saturation point. Gadar is an emotion and the all-time blockbuster has made its name registered in the record books of the Indian box office several years back. So, to touch such a film for a sequel, which has a huge legacy, was always a daring thing to do. But director Anil Sharma did it, and so far, he won’t regret his decision.

Yes, Gadar 2 managed to garner all the attention it deserved due to the goodwill of part 1. In fact, the craze has been unprecedented among the audience, especially in B and C centres. To be very honest, the trailer and all the revamped versions of old Gadar classic songs have received average responses from viewers, but that doesn’t really matter here. There’s nostalgia attached to the film and the character of Tara Singh, due to which the advance booking has been earth-shattering.

So, irrespective of the content, it looked like a bonafide blockbuster to me and a celebration for Gadar fans.

As reported by us in advance booking stories, Gadar 2 has already amassed a hefty collection and is set for a humongous opening day. Even multiplex chains have joined the party, while single screens are already erupting like volcanoes. To share my own experience, this mass entertainer had around 60% occupancy for an 8:30 am show in a Cinepolis theatre. Most of the attendees were middle-aged, so it’s clear that Gadar fans will give at least one chance to the sequel.

Talking about the positives of Gadar 2, the film is enjoying a massive advance booking not just for the opening day but for the entire weekend. So, there are chances that the 100 crore mark will be crossed by Sunday itself. Not to forget, there’s a holiday on Tuesday, providing more boost at ticket windows. Considering the patriotic backdrop, the Sunny Deol starrer will be the first choice of moviegoers on Independence Day. During the first 5 days, the film would do enough business to get a success tag at the Indian box office. Yes, there’s competition in the form of OMG 2, but that film has an adult certification and won’t eat up in Anil Sharma‘s film business. Other than that, this Gadar sequel has an open run for two weeks until Ayushmann Khurrana’s Dream Girl 2 releases on the 25th of August.

Coming to the negatives of Gadar 2, the film falls flat when it comes to content. It’s just the euphoria of Tara Singh, and after the Independence Day holiday, a sharp decline would be seen. No doubt, collections are going to be huge, but a golden opportunity has been missed to turn a firecracker into a dynamite. Considering the pre-release buzz, the film had a huge potential to create history, but it won’t be happening now.

On the whole, Gadar 2 got a perfect platform to do something unimaginable and go past the milestone of 300 crores or more, but the content isn’t just backing it up. After the hoopla during the extended weekend, the film won’t be able to rake in much. It is expected to earn between 150-170 crores at the Indian box office.

Love him or hate him, there’s no denying that Karan Johar is a brand of cinema in himself. Despite so much hate against him, the man knows how to calm down his haters, and with his every film, he has done it brilliantly. KJo knows very well how quintessential family dramas work, and that’s what the trailer suggested. It gave the impression that the film would be a typical over-the-top Bollywood family drama for which KJo is known; still, it had that feel-good factor with the right amount of cry, laughter and romance.

Unlike previous Karan Johar albums, this one didn’t have chartbuster tracks. Still, it has done its job with songs like Tum Kya Mile and Dhindora Baje Re gaining traction among the masses.

Apart from the aforementioned factors, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani enjoys the momentum of the successful ongoing season for romantic comedies. The success of Zara Hatke Zara Bachke and SatyaPrem Ki Katha has brought back the confidence that Bollywood romantic comedies/dramas have takers if made properly.

Overall, RARKPK looked like another winner with a much better scope at the box office, considering the names of Karan Johar, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt attached.

As we reported earlier, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani has witnessed one of the best advance bookings for Bollywood in recent times. If compared with Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and Kisi Ka Bhai Ki Jaan, this rom-com is ahead. It wasn’t just blocked seat booking, as theatres did witness decent morning response, and it was all organic. Evening shows onwards, there’s an improvement in occupancies, and we’re about to get one of the biggest openers of 2023.

Talking about the things that work in favour, word-of-mouth has been decent to positive. Of course, it’s quite early to assume, but there are no negative words for the film so far. Such initial audience feedback will show an overall positive impact on the weekend collection. There’s also not much competition present in theatres. Yes, Barbie and Oppenheimer are still playing successfully in theatres, but both of these biggies won’t cause a major impact as this Karan Johar directorial majorly caters family audience. The film is being released with a screen count of 3000 in India, and with the absence of any major competitor, it has got an open ground to rake in a good sum. Now coming to the negatives, RARKPK is mainly for multiplex audiences, and mass centres won’t join the party. Another major hurdle is the ongoing heavy rainfalls in metros. Yes, the major Indian cities where the film has its target audience are witnessing heavy rains, and it is bound to affect the performance to an extent, especially during the night shows. There’s a possibility that people might avoid giving it a dekko in theatres and wait till it comes on OTT.

On the whole, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is a perfect directorial comeback for Karan Johar and is bound to become his highest-earning film at the Indian box office by surpassing Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’s 112.50 crores. For Ranveer Singh too, it’s his much-deserved return at the box office after his Jayeshbhai Jordaar and Cirkus failed miserably. Here, Ranveer isn’t Jayeshbhai; still, he’s got a ‘Jordaar’ film!

The film is expected to earn anywhere between 115-130 crores at the Indian box office.
